My ex boss has stolen my leaving collection

Sadleaver · 11/03/2022 20:05

I left my last job a month ago. My boss said he would put my leaving card and gift (bought with the money from a staff collection) in the post, as he wasn't around on my last day working in the office (hybrid working). He recently told one of my former colleagues he sent me a £50 John Lewis voucher, a bottle of gin and some sweets that I like, posted on my last day. But nothing has arrived, and there are no issues with my post deliveries. Interestingly, he doesn't know my address and has never asked me for it...

I genuinely don't care about a bottle of booze and a voucher, it's the principal of taking other people's money I'm annoyed with. I know I have no evidence but this manager is a bully and keeps getting away with horrible behaviour (which is why I left). He got caught stealing bottles of wine from our Xmas party a few years back, so he has form. Surely he'd have sent a parcel valued at roughly £80 by signed for post as well, or would check that I'd received it?

Would I be mad to say something?

One way to get your address i from HR though so he might tell you that

HR at my last place would not have given him the address. They’d have told him to leave the parcel with them and they would address it and see it was posted.

Can you ask them if he asked them for your address?

Touchmybum · 13/03/2022 20:18

@WeValueYourPrivacy

You have to say something or he'll end up as prime minister.
Perhaps he already has...!
jackstini · 14/03/2022 10:25

@goingtotown

Ask him for the John Lewis receipt, they will be able to trace the voucher.
Genius!

100% you should say something and definitely via email so there is a record
Agree along the lines of thanking for the leaving gift and asking for tracking as it's such a shame it hasn't arrived

PainterMummy · 15/03/2022 08:19

@Sadleaver have you now written to your old colleagues/hr?

DahliaBlue · 15/03/2022 08:35

Don't accuse him direct as there could be other explanations but definitely enquire about it. Make sure your colleagues know you have not received anything after thanking them for their contributions.

girlmom21 · 15/03/2022 08:47

Tell your colleagues it hasn't arrived and let them complain or investigate. It's their money he's stealing.

Shoemadlady · 15/03/2022 21:20

Email all of your colleagues including him and say thanks so much for the thought, you really appreciate them having a whip round but that it's not arrived.
Say it in a lighthearted way, "it's the thought that counts" "I'll think of the gin next time I need a drink etc" they'll know he didn't send it and you'll shame him indirectly x

Slightly different, but when I was going on maternity leave I was given as part of my gift, a big cake with my photo on the front. About a quarter was shared with whoever wanted some, and I went back to work. At the end of the day I went to collect my presents and the rest of the cake- with me on- and someone had eaten it! All of it! And put the silver cake board in the bin! My maternity cake 😂. I still think it’s wrong.

DaphneSprucesPippasClack · 15/03/2022 22:59

HR here, we don't give our addresses for any reason. The staff member wanting the address has to ask it from the staff member whose address it is.

Sadleaver · 15/03/2022 23:44
@Sadleaver have you now written to your old colleagues/hr?
No, so I'm not really sure what to say without coming across as utterly insane!

I only know two colleagues who say they contributed (because they asked me what I got as my leaving gift as they'd heard nothing about it). One of them is going to email the boss and ask what the collection went on.

I'm thinking what if nobody else contributed and that's why I didn't get sent anything, and then that kind of makes me look pretty stupid?! But in that case those two people should get their money back).

Your boss does know your address, HMRC want it for tax business. That aside he's a robbing cunt report him!

girlmom21 · 16/03/2022 06:34

But in your OP you said He recently told one of my former colleagues he sent me a £50 John Lewis voucher, a bottle of gin and some sweets that I like, posted on my last day. so if that wasn't true why would he lie?

Monty27 · 16/03/2022 07:15

If you feel comfortable by asking HR to forward your address to him as you haven't yet received your gift do that. Copy in ex boss.

theyreallydontcare · 16/03/2022 07:24

I would make a noise about this. It's despicable behaviour.

It happened to me years ago. I left mainly because of a bullying boss, and was off sick when I resigned. Months later I found out that vile boss had collected for a leaving present for me, and then slagged me off for being rude and ungrateful for not sending a thank you card - for leaving presents that I never got!

What hurt me most was that she had effectively stolen money from my ex colleagues. That was unforgivable.

Mum2oneboy1yr · 16/03/2022 19:59

Terrible how some people just have no shame.

Sadleaver · 23/03/2022 14:49

Update: Apparently his dog ate my leaving card and the gift card and he's been meaning to replace them.

God he didn’t even try to sound convincing, did he?

BringMeTea · 23/03/2022 15:01

What a colossal cunt he is.

What a stupid twat.. At least people now know what he did though.
IncompleteSenten · 23/03/2022 15:04

The dog ate my homework, miss.

🙄🙄

Grantanow · 23/03/2022 15:27

Theft is a criminal offence.

HelloSpringIveMissedYou · 23/03/2022 15:29

Jeez what a blatant lie an excuse Hmm

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/03/2022 15:56

Jesus H. Christ - 'the dog ate it' is the excuse you use when you can't be arsed to make up something believable. Hmm Except for that one time that the DC's homework was to bake something for the cake sale and the dog genuinely did manage to get his chops around it overnight. He looked pregnant for three days and the farting was .

PunishmentSnart · 23/03/2022 16:01

Haha - his dog ate a card, voucher, chocolates AND A BOTTLE OF GIN??? Grin

Outed himself as a thief....

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 23/03/2022 16:03

He sounds the type who would send you the vet's bill after his ddog ate your chocolates!
