AIBU to think about moving to Liverpool

SauceGirl · 07/03/2022 15:10

Hello wise Mumsnetters.
I live in London and am thinking of moving to Liverpool. I can work from anywhere and feel like I need a change. I have a cousin and a uni friend who live up there. The only thing I'm not sure about is the areas. I've been looking at Toxteth, Old Swan, Waverly and Sefton Park. Are there any other nice or up-and-coming area that I should consider?
Thanks in advance all!

Also recommend Chester over Liverpool. I adore it.

AuntTwacky · 08/03/2022 01:18

@Chocolattay

Honestly, people who don’t know it think Liverpool is this worldly, cultural city but it isn’t. It is still stuck on the Beatles which says it all really. I know people who moved expecting a culture hub and were sorely disappointed.

It’s just like any other provincial UK city except with a dock.

Manchester knocks it put of the park. Of course that is still provincial compared to London but it has so much going on these days. Deansgate Square, Media City (with the BBC an ITV studios!). And further out it still has unique areas to offer and neighbourhoods with character like Didsbury. It’s got that proper Northern character to it and is very much the hub of the North, Liverpool is more one on its own.

I’d very much recommend considering Manchester instead if you’re wanting to come up north.

Disagree.. there is loads more to Liverpool than the Beatles. Try two theatres and a Philharmonic hall for starters
Chocolattay · 08/03/2022 01:21

@AuntTwacky.

Fair enough but I do find the Philharmonic hall building ugly and sinister looking.

OldWivesTale · 08/03/2022 01:21

@Elkey where do you live now out of interest?

Oldtiredfedup · 08/03/2022 01:58

Port Sunlight?

tryanotherone123 · 08/03/2022 02:31

@Lime37

I would probably only go for Sefton park out of your list. Lark lane, Mosley hill, aigburth, cressington, Woolton. But I would also look at parts of Waterloo and crosby but I love being close to the beach
150k won't buy anything in those areas now.

Best bet is smith down area, really up and coming or dingle cheap and ver close to town.

After that wavertree and old swan.

Rummikub · 08/03/2022 03:39

Are the £1 houses still available?

SummerWhisper · 08/03/2022 05:58

Ignore @Chocolattay re culture, Liverpool has it in abundance and a lot of it is free. River of Light Festival, the Tall Ships, FACT, Pride / Homotopia, the Met Quarter / Liverpool One / Bold Street for shopping, Baltic for arts, alternative food and drinks, Red Brick for vintage and some great food and drinks, Africa Oye, Shiverpool, all the different heritage trails and walks, masses of green space / parks, the stunning Docks and all the eateries, bars and shops, loads of art galleries, the Biennial, Light Night Liverpool, loads of independent traders (don't forget to buy your Independent Liverpool card for all the offers). There is always loads to do.

In terms of housing, the posher areas in South Liverpool also have inexpensive areas within them such as Gateacre, Childwall, Woolton, Cressington and Mossley Hill where you can find some lovely terraces and flats. Aigburth Road is brilliant for terraces (but no back gardens, just yards). Off Lark Lane, you'll probably find flats in large houses, as the houses are huge, ex- merchant type Victorian villas. Off Allerton Rd you can find decent sized 3 and 4-bed terraces and little semis (with gardens). These areas will also attract students. Smithdown Road (the Dales Roads) is perfect for students and young professionals with great eateries and bars. I spend a lot of time in Liverpool but live on the Wirral! I love Liverpool! DM me for advice. I have loads of family and friends all over the city.

👏👏👏 Well said.
OP is likely to have got very different answers if they'd been a bit more truthful in the first place
Agreed.

Helping a person find somewhere they want to live is fine with me but I'm not interested in supporting investors or landlords especially people who've been priced out of the markets down south who now see places like liverpool as an opportunity.

Half the problems in residential areas are caused by buy to lets and it really damages communities.

SauceGirl · 08/03/2022 11:52

Thanks so much for th info! @SummerWhisper

I live in Lincolnshire, an hour to London on the train. It's also rural and pretty. Basically the opposite to where I grew up in Liverpool.

MaxineRA · 08/03/2022 13:18
@SauceGirl - that wasn't my point! Why do you need to buy an additional house/flat to rent out and then buy something for yourself?

It's nothing to do with your accent more your attitude.

There are streets in Liverpool being bought up as buy to rent/student properties and local people are priced out of the market

It's not something that many find funny

Come to Liverpool, buy a property, love the city (and wider area) but stop being greedy. There are thousands of young Liverpool residents who cannot get on the property ladder because some folks thing they will buy one for themselves and one as "an insurance"

We do not judge people on their accents here but their attitude to life and others
👏🏻 So sick of seeing this happen. It’s a really selfish greedy mindset

It's a beautiful 1930s modernist building!

SauceGirl · 08/03/2022 14:13

@BrioNotBiro I saw it today and thought it was beautiful! Horses for courses I suppose

One thing we can agree on - love it too! Smile

@SummerWhisper - good rundown of many reasons we can be proud to live here - also adding NML, cathedrals, beaches, China Town, Georgian Quarter, universities, parks in abundance, Wirral (Leisure Peninsular!), football, politics and much more

runningpram · 08/03/2022 22:05

Liverpool is great, Wirral is generally quite provincial and dull. People are often really wary of anyone with a different accent or outlook on life It can also be quite snobby in parts ( not sure why!). Plus points are that it has great beaches and is suprisingly unBrexity

SummerWhisper · 08/03/2022 22:50

The Philharmonic Hall is a stunning art deco building. It is decadent and plush inside. Just lovely and home to Liverpool's own Philharmonic Orchestra.

Yes @crimesagainstwine - so much more we could list, too!

Sagared · 08/03/2022 23:36

I moved away. Wouldn't recommend many places in Merseyside. Lancashire is nicer.

NukesOfHazard · 09/03/2022 06:53

Honestly I’m quite heartened that it’s not just me who finds the Wirral provincial and dull

I’ve made three friends in 8 years here and I feel terrible about it - people just don’t want to know about anybody who didn’t go to school with them. In turn; I’ve now become kind of insular and dull myself

It’s made me wonder if I should think about nudging my husband into moving on tbh

One thing I will say though - we moved here from another city and my life king asthma seemed to clear up spontaneously because the air here is really fresh and you definitely notice it when you cross the water

EIisheva · 11/03/2022 20:22

Not just you, no! I found many parts of the NW a bit like this tbh

Moomieboo · 11/03/2022 20:49

No chance is Cantril Farm !!!

Moomieboo · 11/03/2022 20:53

I lived on outskirts until I was 18, then lived in Toxteth and Aigburth at University.
We once found a finger in the middle of Toxteth...that was fun !!!
We had a fab time at University but when we finished we moved down south to my now DH's home town and have been there since 2002.
Liverpool is a fabulous place to visit, but I wouldn't want to raise my family there...the children grow up very quickly !!! My kids are quite innocent on comparison but they just roam over fields !!!Blush

Having lived in both cities (and then moved South) I have to say I disagree. I found Manchester a really generic city and a bit of a cultural desert. Liverpool has much more going on and being by the coast adds a whole extra dimension to the city.

SauceGirl · 14/03/2022 10:33

Just got back from a trip there and looked at some places a couple of them were Rightmove links that you guys provided.
Tbh I preferred the south to the North. As with anywhere there was some nice and nasty moved together. Unlike the area around Sefton Park especially going towards Princes Park, so many huge and beautiful parks! Some of Toxteth was nice, some less so. Generally pretty impressive. Thanks for all your help guys!
