AIBU to think about moving to Liverpool

Hello wise Mumsnetters.
I live in London and am thinking of moving to Liverpool. I can work from anywhere and feel like I need a change. I have a cousin and a uni friend who live up there. The only thing I'm not sure about is the areas. I've been looking at Toxteth, Old Swan, Waverly and Sefton Park. Are there any other nice or up-and-coming area that I should consider?
Thanks in advance all!

@dancingwithtearsinmyeyes I think we've definitely had different experiences then! I definitely don't think it's just Liverpool, not at all, but as someone who has lived here all of my life, been out in every single area, myself and my entire social circle certainly don't feel any welcoming and safe vibes from town. It's spread far beyond the Slater Street area now tbh. Gangs of idiots have taken over. Different strokes for different folks though!

Much prefer an evening out on Allerton these days.

@FayCarew

I know someone who lives in Childwall and she says the L and the D.

Wiki says that Wavertree is pronounced Wautry - is that correct?

Just Waver-Tree 😁
bjjgirl · 07/03/2022 16:38

Asda thou is pronounced "the Asda"

It's chill wall and Wavertree is just pronounced as it looks.
DouglasCrood · 07/03/2022 16:40

Yanbu! It's fantastic there and I've never met a Liverpudlian I didn't like. I'm Envy

FayCarew · 07/03/2022 16:48

Thanks Sausage and Mrs G.

Thinking about it, it is chill wall she says.

I lived in Wavertree and I never heard anyone call it anything other than waver-tree

OP, if you are moving there, it gets a lot more rain than London

SiliconHeaven · 07/03/2022 16:54

I live in Wavertree, it has its moments and could do with a bit of TLC, not dangerous though. If I could afford it I would live off Allerton Road, it’s lovely there.

ToMockAKillingBird · 07/03/2022 16:55

I grew up in Liverpool (Woolton) which is nice. Also Crosby, Childwall, West Derby are mostly OK. If you can up your budget look more towards Formby / Birkdale.

We were back in Liverpool recently for a family wedding, went out to town for a meal n drinks on the Friday. Its really gone downhill, some really dodgy people around.

Feelinglow27 · 07/03/2022 17:04

Have a look at l19. Some parts are close to l18 but the l19 postcode makes it cheaper. However house prices have rocketed in South liverpool so I'm not sure you'll find much with your budget unless you are looking at flats.

TheFlyHalfsMum · 07/03/2022 17:05

Birkdale is Southport!

Feelinglow27 · 07/03/2022 17:05

Funny someone mentioned the rain, I'm from the Midlands and work in manc and Liverpool always has much better weather than these two places!

TheFlyHalfsMum · 07/03/2022 17:08

West Derby isn’t a bad shout - just had quick peak at rightmove (I’m an addict) to see what house prices are doing there at the moment and you could get a doer upper there in your price range.

FayCarew · 07/03/2022 17:12

It's dryer than Manchester but still a lot wetter than the South East

Shortbread49 · 07/03/2022 17:19

Areas around Allerton Road and Sefton Park but they are not so cheap or the Wirral West Kirby and Hoylake or Heswall West Kirby has a prom, marine lake if you like a bit of wind surfing excellent grammar schools and is on a trainline direct to Liverpool

stonebrambleboy · 07/03/2022 17:21

There's a new Shakespeare theatre being built at Prescot.

Shortbread49 · 07/03/2022 17:24

I’ve lived in the following but you are talking 20 to 30 years ago so things have probably changed a lot here are the places I would live in again Birkenhead No, Oxton village yes some lovely old houses and s nice village centre, Anfield No unless you are a big football fan, Toxteth yes if near Princes Park, Sefton park Yes and Near Penny lane Yes

MillenialInDenial · 07/03/2022 17:30

Sefton and surrounding are gorgeous especially in summer, West Derby, Wavertree, Old Swan are perfectly placed areas to get into the city & motorways etc.
Knowsley Village is nice but to be honest abit cut off from real life only recently got a cash point heads off into Kirkby.
Huyton, Whiston, Prescot are fine pretty general areas close to motorways & shopping centres.
Toxteth, Bootle, Edge Hill, Aigburth can be both lovely but just like most cities you get the odd group of idiots who let the area down and give it a bad name.
Anfield, Woolton & Mossley Hill are perfect areas for fixer uppers.

Delphinium90 · 07/03/2022 17:41

The part of Wavertree bordered by Queens Drive,Church Road and Childwall Road;basically, beyond Picton Clock. Mostly semi-detached suburban housing with gardens and good schools.

liverpoolnana · 07/03/2022 17:45

I live in Childwall and have never heard it pronounced other than with the l and the d, so it sounds like Chilled wall.

The area that confused me when we first moved here was Gateacre pronounced Gatt a ker..

Whoopsies · 07/03/2022 17:55

I agree to looking in parts of Sefton too, Crosby and Maghull are both nice, and cheaper than south Liverpool or the Wirral. There are good and bad to everywhere but I've been here 17 years now and love the whole area!

FayCarew · 07/03/2022 17:57
Grin I'd heard Gateacre before I saw it written down so never had a problem with it.

I remember asking for directions to Fazakerley and was met with a blank response. Then he said ' Ah, you mean Fazachaley"

GrunkleStan · 07/03/2022 18:03

I'm familiar with new brighton. Generally it's good, but some areas do suffer some antisocial behaviour, particularly in the summer and some streets / areas are a bit ropey.

£150k won't go far tho, the last 2 years have been silly money.

HereComesTheSum · 07/03/2022 18:06

Why are you hot on Toxteth? I've only heard of it because I saw it on crimewatch. Avoid.

bravotango · 07/03/2022 18:06

With your budget I'd look for a flat in L17, Ullet Road way. Stick close to Sefton Park or allerton road/Smithdown road. I agree with a PP about lark Lane - it's got lots of lovely cafes etc but it's unpleasant at night. However there are lots of nice flats around it, so as long as you're a few roads away from the lane you'll be fine. Also flats at the park end of Princes avenue/belvedere road are quite nice.

NotJustACigar · 07/03/2022 18:07

Waterloo is nice and easily within your budget. Crosby is probably out of reach.
