To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

We have three different sirens depending on what sort of attack it is, and instructions what to do if they go off. All all households had leaflets sent home a couple of years ago of what to do in case of war or crisis, check lists of you need to have at home at all times to cope for a few weeks. And there’s a site where you easily can check where your nearest shelter is and how many people will fit in that shelter. Which in most places is one garage built to a shelter on each block. This is from the 80’s when people (one house on each road basically) where given money from the government to rebuild your garage to a shelter. We’ve been told to keep a bag ready and what to bring to the nearest shelter etc. But, I don’t think that would help much if there was a nuclear bomb..

The government will not have started planning, they will have continued planning. Disaster planning is a thing. Years ago I was at college with someone who was going on to do Disaster Planning degree.

www.coventry.ac.uk/course-structure/ug/eec/disaster-and-emergency-management-bsc-hons/

Also, emergency services periodically practice these plans to see what they've missed. I've a vague memory of a dry run of a train derailment, my son took part in a police hostage-taking exercise, and I'm pretty sure Salisbury weren't just winging it on Novichok but implementing plans made long before.

Plans are made for every eventuality. Existing plans will be being reviewed right now.

Whether we like what is being planned is another matter.

@Flapjacker48

Also there is a serious "Mandela effect" about the protect and survive booklet - it was NEVER issued en-masse to UK households, various newspapers/tv docs/journalists showed bits of it in the 70s and it was available to buy from 1980 (not many sold!)
Really? I could have sworn they were posted through our letterboxes. I’ve definitely got one somewhere, so must have bought it. I’ll have a rummage later.

I’d be surprised if it didn’t sell well though. We were all very aware of the campaign and I can’t imagine most people wouldn’t have wanted to read it.

Of course they haven't. This shower couldn't plan their way out of a paper bag.
So please provide details of all the wonderful and effective precautions that Brown/Blair put in place over their 13 years of power as you clearly think they'd done a lot more than current government??

Here is a link in English of how to explain about the war to your children. Teachers have also been sent information about what to say.

A typically stupid, everything's this government's fault, comment. Are you, and the rest of the lefties, really so thick to think that there is no provision made, irrespective of the party in power, for such eventualities? The West has had to plan for this for decades, thanks to the left's best friends. Just because it isn't on Twitter, Facebook etc etc doesn't mean it doesn't exist, do try and grow up!

Brilliant - let's use last century's technology. Given that the vast majority of people have smart phones etc., we really, really, should have a "fit for purpose" system of smart phone alerts, i.e. tailored messages to phones based on a very localised "phone mast" circumference. The technology must be available to do it. By all means, continue using old fashioned sirens as a back up, but most people wouldn't know what to do nor what they mean. Just look at when a fire alarm goes off and everyone stands around waiting to see what others are doing!

@DottyHarmer

Pointless planning. Looking at Chernobyl the children born afterwards, even years afterwards, had birth defects and cancer. My friends gave a “Chernobyl child” a holiday every year and one thing they had to do was take them for dental work as the children’s teeth grew as black stumps. Terrible.
The teeth dont necessarily be because of the radiation.

I remember the information films and leaflets!!! I think you can see it on YouTube.

The biggest thing I remember is about having to fill your bath with water…😵‍💫

AppleNo8 · 06/03/2022 10:51

This is the leaflet all households have been sent, it’s really good.

I don't think we should know, it would be chaos

SueSaid · 06/03/2022 10:52

I would love to know who gets a place in an official bunker. Surely there'll be lists drawn up so key experts like defence, medical and tech staff etc can try and form some kind of survival plan afterwards.

We have had sos smart phone alerts for years. Even if there is a small fire nearby the alarm goes off on your phone and you can check on the map where it is and instructions.

Remainers BLAME BREXIT as as nuclear weapons fall on Britain.

Flapjacker48 · 06/03/2022 10:53

@Daisymaybe60 No, they were definitely never issued free to the public in the UK (I think an similar thing was in places like the IoM). Some local authorities may have also issued their own stuff, but the "classic" protect and survive book no.

Bunnyfuller · 06/03/2022 10:54

OP, did I read you correctly? This government and ‘planning’? A couple of months after the bombs hit no doubt Boris will announce something we’ve been the ‘fastest, mostest, biggest’ to do.

Having read today’s 6 point plan which is literally some words joined together I very much doubt it.

AppleNo8 · 06/03/2022 10:55

Also we do know what the sirens mean. They go on three o’clock on a monday once a month for practice. We teach our children what to do.

mynamesnotMa · 06/03/2022 10:56

Let's hope it's quick. He's a mad man. We can't we get someone in there to kill him

It's a bit handmaiden but don't they need young fertile women or at least children who can grow up & repopulate.

the80sweregreat · 06/03/2022 10:56

The daily Mail would manage to squeeze in how much the nuclear bunker was worth after an attack. Especially the special Royal bunker.
On a more serious note, I think I would rather die than try and survive a nuclear attack.
What would be the point, plus the thought of a protracted death or having to eat rats doesn't appeal at all.
It's still a scary gloomy thought though

I gather there is currently minimal preparation in place so expect to make your own arrangements. The Protect and Survive leaflet is fairly useless now as blast power is much greater today than decades ago. The national pattern of attacks would be different from decades ago as well so can’t be as easily predicted.

Flapjacker48 · 06/03/2022 10:59

@JaniieJones what "official bunkers"? we are talking at best, places like the (alleged) one under the MoD for a tiny amount of people.

The network of bunkers for regional commissioners and the plans to staff them all died at the end of the cold war (and there was HUGE concerns that these plans would not have worked for many reasons)

The huge central government bunker under box hill is now decommissioned and is a wine and document store.

With nuclear fusion weapons no "bunkers" are really secure anyway.

ddl1 · 06/03/2022 11:00

If a nuclear bomb hits the UK, there's not much we could do about it. Personally, if it does, I hope that I'm right at the epicentre and instantly blown to kingdom come. With the health issues that I already have, I could never cope in a nuclear winter (not sure that anyone could, to be honest). God, I thought we'd largely left those sorts of fears behind in the 1980s.
