To wonder if the government have started any planning on what if a nuclear weapon hit britain

Even in the current climate, I don’t actually believe that a nuclear bomb will be hitting the UK.

But I wondered if the government have prepared for the eventuality.

I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked.

In other countries they have bomb shelters and sirens.

I wouldn’t have a clue what to do. The only thing I do know is that I would want to be with my family when it happened.

Anyone one else wonder about this?

There is no siren system to warn the public - if fylingdales detected an incoming strike on the UK, they and a few people in the military would be the only ones who would no. There would be no 4-7 minutes "warning

We'd probably get a text message.

This is the UK Government. A nuclear weapon will be arriving soon. Please let us know if you will be out so we can rearrange delivery.

@Xpologog

The government have got a bomb shelter for themselves. I don’t think they give a flying fig what happens to anyone else. But I could be wrong.
Of course ay government would have a bomb shelter for themselves .In all honestly how practical is it to build bomb shelter for the whole population

In 1980 53 million in UK, now 68 Million. Far too many people to organise in an event of this scale even back then.
I was in London in 1980 and at our school had it drummed into us about nuclear attack. Apart from the leaflets, Threads, when the wind blows, we had films at school that traumatised us of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In drama we had to act out 4 minute warnings and in English write poems about it. We had two tribes from Frankie goes to Hollywood. It was never ending and we were terrified. We even had a teacher who told us we wont live beyond our teens.
Maybe thats why as older teens in late 80's early 90's we embraced rave culture and hedonism ( very peace and love at its grass roots) as we were told the world is a scary place and live for now.
The reality I am sad to say if the unthinkeable happened was to not want to survive it. Just disposing of the dead would be impossible, the nuclear winter that followed would make climate change look like a grey day.
The starvation, breakdown of services and society would be very hard. It would be like medieval times but much much worse.
So be were brought up very anti missiles.
I only hope that the rest of the world realises this. China does not want this, who would it sell its tat to? If there is no one left to rebuild everything?
The main focus would be finding clean water and food and air.
I think the Russian people will intervene if their new way of life is under threat. From queuing for food to being Western and enjoying holidays abroad is their new normal. I dont think they will enjoy being placed back in 1980, they have changed. So it is the Russian people who will change this. But it might take time. But I think it will get close. Then we end up with another generation of traumatised people.

Testarossa44 · 06/03/2022 10:10

I’d go and sit outside with a nice cup of tea and a biscuit and wait for the bomb to drop and take me out.

Flapjacker48 · 06/03/2022 10:10

For those mentioning the Royal Family - the main plan would the queen would be on the Royal Yacht on the coast off Scotland if the cold war had gone hot.

Chakraleaf · 06/03/2022 10:11

Duck, luck and fucked made me giggle

bellinisurge · 06/03/2022 10:13

"I heard that in the 70s/80s there were loads of leaflets and adverts of what we should do if we were attacked. "
I was alive in the 70s and 80s. It was an exercise in keeping us all busy. This is a horrible situation, all the more horrible for people in Ukraine. Donate to the DEC campaign.

I think you need to reflect on 2 things.
1.As an island with nuclear weapons we are a target with no chance of survival.

  1. Putin wants Ukraine as an asset not as a premise for starting WWIII. I predict some face saving stuff will be sorted out.
fungh · 06/03/2022 10:15

@notimagain well I was being facetious but they would have to do it early enough but not let the public cotton on.

I read on her that William went to MI6 secretly, perhaps they were discussing plans then.

I presume there are tunnels under MI6 and escape routes as it's on the river.

Squiff70 · 06/03/2022 10:17

@Handsnotwands I've been absolutely howling with laughter at "Duck, luck, fucked".

Me too lol first time I've actually not been shit scared and laughed

bellinisurge · 06/03/2022 10:18

The Royal Family has a whole thing about not leaving. "The girls won't leave without their mother, their mother won't leave without the King. And the King will never leave ". The Queen Mother (current Queen's mother) was quoted as saying this in WWII. The proposal was to send them all to Canada for safety.
Doubt they would go against this mythology

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 06/03/2022 10:18

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

In some cases rural will be attacked - many airbases, military barracks, radar sites etc are rural. Even disused but viable ex mil runways are potentially targets.
There are no bases around here, just sheep, cows, gossip, and ugly people.Grin

Now in our previous home near Menwith and the AFC, may come under attack. This is all hypothetical.

Ah ..sorry, didn’t get the context, that is me being dull Wink

Yep.

Flapjacker48 · 06/03/2022 10:20

@cakeorwine I very much doubt it. Remember a strategic rocket launch against the UK is, even now, vanishingly unlikely. There is no home office UKWMO (who had the task and infrastructure to "alert" the public) equivalent based in High Wycombe anymore. So you would simply get mad panic in Fylingdales who would detect the incoming strike, tell RAF command in High Wycombe who could do nothing other than make a few calls.

In the past the UKWMO has able to activate via the BBC warnings on all TV/radio which again probably isn't able to happen now.

Commercial broadcasters have an emergency system that shows presenters that an "urgent" news story is likely, but the would mainly be activated for the death of the queen!

fungh · 06/03/2022 10:25

I don't know if they actually would, I'd say the Queen wouldn't but W&K most likely. But I assume Kate will "disappear" again after this flurry of engagements. Now it's likely she will just relax, etc but perhaps she will be prepping.

TaraRhu · 06/03/2022 10:25

I hope they have!

Daily Mail headline the next day

Kate and William are safe as nuclear weapons devastate Britain.

katepilar · 06/03/2022 10:27

@BarbaraofSeville

While the nuclear war scenario that will directly kill/injure millions of people is hopefully beyond credible possibility there are arrangements in place for all manner of nuclear releases near and far. These have existed for decades and are constantly practiced.

Even in the worst case situations akin to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, with direct hits on densely populated areas, most people outside the cities will be unaffected, so it's far from 'kiss your arse goodbye' for the majority unless we're in a situation where there are multiple nuclear bombs dropped across the country.

Japan was hit by two nuclear bombs in 1945. Significant proportions (about 200 000 people) of the residents of those cities were killed in the blasts or died shortly afterwards due to conventional injuries or radiation related illness.

But from the other 77 million Japanese people alive at the time, about 650 000 were identified as 'explosion affected people' and the affects on these people have been formally studied to this day.

It's formed the basis of our knowledge of how radiation exposure affects people as their radiation dose could be assessed by noting where they were at the time of the blast.

Of those people, about 1% have been found to be made ill due to radiation exposure, despite receiving high radiation doses and despite it now being nearly 77 years later, a lot of the exposed people have lived long healthy lives and many are still alive today.

Thanks, this is helpful info.

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

I understand that we can't digest sweetcorn, so when the 'balloon goes up' and society collapses i calculate that with four tins of sweetcorn, a washing-up bowl and a small nail brush, one should be able to survive without additional food forever...
Hahahahahah that’s so funny
Flapjacker48 · 06/03/2022 10:27

Also there is a serious "Mandela effect" about the protect and survive booklet - it was NEVER issued en-masse to UK households, various newspapers/tv docs/journalists showed bits of it in the 70s and it was available to buy from 1980 (not many sold!)

cakeorwine · 06/03/2022 10:28

Daily Express Headline

House prices collapse as nuclear weapons devastate Britain.

Itsbackagain · 06/03/2022 10:29

Nuclear weapons have developed hugely in the last 40 years. If we get nuked just hope you go with the blast as living through it would be worse.

fungh · 06/03/2022 10:33

Kate and William are safe as nuclear weapons devastate Britain.

How reassuring 😆

fungh · 06/03/2022 10:35

I think if bombs are used though they would be far bigger &/or multiple. You don't do it gingerly as retaliation is likely annihilation. It's all or nothing.

killerofhouseplants · 06/03/2022 10:41

The only planning the corrupt kleptocrats in government will be doing is in respect to their hedge fund positions. They couldn't give a shiny shit about the public.
