Just that really. What words make you kinda recoil.

Maccy D's (just say McDonalds FFS)

ClinkeyMonkey · 07/03/2022 10:49

Not a word, but a phrase - 'use your words'. So bloody patronising.

teawamutu · 07/03/2022 11:25

Cuppa
Journey
Gifted
Fell pregnant
Haters

WellNotReally · 07/03/2022 11:56

Tricky. Everything's bloody tricky these days. Sorry for pointing this out if you hadn't already noticed it, because you'll hear it everywhere from now on.

Two times. So many adverts now say something is two times more effective, or two times as whatever. What happened to 'twice'? Two times sounds like a child talking.

Gift as a verb

GlitteryGreen · 07/03/2022 12:11

'Little man'

GlitteryGreen · 07/03/2022 12:12

Also couples who say 'we're pregnant'. NO. Only one person is pregnant!

GlitteryGreen · 07/03/2022 12:14

Ooh also weird use of the past tense, things like "the baby needs fed' or "needs changed".

Fairislefandango · 07/03/2022 12:27

That's not the past tense though. It's just a regional form that misses out the 'to be' bit. The participles 'fed' and 'changed' are being used in a passive construction and could be used in all kinds of tenses - 'Will need (to be) fed', 'Would need (to be) fed' etc.

Whattodoniw · 07/03/2022 12:44

I also don't like the words
Breakfast
Bum
Kid/kids instead of children
Weep
Tearful
Stinks/ stink

All of the above piss me off totally unnecessarily.

FatOaf · 07/03/2022 12:51

'Little man'

In the context of "male child" or "penis"?

Bum

One of my favourite words.

Fell pregnant

Absolutely, utterly hate this expression.

GlitteryGreen · 07/03/2022 12:54

@FatOaf 🤣 I was going for male child, but honestly...both! I hear it far more for male child though!

rainbowmash · 07/03/2022 14:07

@GlitteryGreen

I know this is a regional thing, but I still hate it because pretentious southern types near me use it too. They tend to be the type of people who try to make everything folksy and romanticised.

You know, the type who sew homemade aprons but own a dishwasher, and talk about "keeping their storecupboards stocked and children's bellies full through winter" even though they're a wealthy SAHM living in a UK city centre.

The pretention makes me cringe more than the phrase!
