DH wants to start a Morris dancing troupe. I must say that I don't think it is something that will go down particularly well in our part of Fulham (the expression lead balloon comes to mind).

AIBU to say NO! Help please!

OP posts:
Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 04/03/2022 20:41

You sound horribly controlling OP and without culture. Get with it!

AdaColeman · 04/03/2022 20:41

Sounds like great fun to me, jingling bells, hats with flowers, hopping & skipping to folksy music, trips to pubs, waving your handkerchief, camaraderie, warm welcomes from clapping crowds….What’s not to like?

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/03/2022 20:42

If this isn’t a pisstake….

I think you’re wrong. It will go down extremely well in certain parts of Fulham, especially if it revolves around the “village” pub.

Stompythedinosaur · 04/03/2022 20:42

Morris dancing is fun!

pictish · 04/03/2022 20:44

I was thinking NO but now I’m thinking YEAH.

Xiaoxiong · 04/03/2022 20:44

Time for lots of Terry pratchett references about jumping about with bells on waving a hanky in the air and dancing "Mrs widgery's lodger" Grin

This is at least your third weird thread tonight OP, you must be very bored.

BlueCookieMonster · 04/03/2022 20:51

Flipping heck OP, let him go Morris dancing. Life is too bloody short for this kind of crap!

SnotMikeUpPuffedHe · 04/03/2022 20:54

It's a side, not a troupe.

And YABU.

ohidoliketobe · 04/03/2022 20:56

Has he shown any interest or desire to Morris dance before now? Is he prone to mild flights of fancy and fad behaviours? If the answers are no and yes in that order, I'd be a bit irked, otherwise I'd think that's a bit twee and leave him to it. Please update this thread on his progress.

Merryoldgoat · 04/03/2022 20:56

Can he do it on Parson’s Green? I’ll pop down and watch with a picnic 👍🏽

iheartmybeachhut · 04/03/2022 20:58

Let him enjoy himself, it'll be fun.

Spudina · 04/03/2022 20:58

YANBU. Morris dancers make me cringe more than The Office.

TheSmallAssassin · 04/03/2022 20:58

It's a side, not a troupe!

I like (watching) morris dancing, all sorts of people do it, of all ages. And it's a good excuse to prance about at the pub, or travel the country doing summer folk festivals.

deerison · 04/03/2022 20:59

@RobinBlackbird

Finally an actual (possibly) outing hobby.
😂
Fernandina · 04/03/2022 21:00

My ex-H was a morris dancer. Might still be, for all I know.

I had to watch from time to time, and to my eyes, it was a lot of prancing about and clacking sticks together. Not easy for him, as he appeard to have studied at the Corporal Jones school of rhythm.

There was a women's team too, but I refrained from joining. Grin

Gilly12345 · 04/03/2022 21:01

Sounds fun, can I join?

SpikeySmooth · 04/03/2022 21:01

Grew up going to fairs and fêtes in the Midlands and watching the Morris Men troupes. Found it to be a bit silly, but it's a strong tradition in some parts and has origins in paganism. Also, it's guaranteed they'll be sinking a pint after the dance 😉. I can't see OPs problem with it. If it make her DH happy, why not?

I'm trying to suppress the urge to quote a lot of the posts, adding the comment 'This. With bells on it'Grin

Heckythump1 · 04/03/2022 21:03

Ahh Morris dancing is lovely! Leave him be to enjoy himself!

EllieQ · 04/03/2022 21:03

@hagsrus0

Would they do the stick-and-bucket dance?
Thought that dance had been banned! Grin
TheHoptimist · 04/03/2022 21:04

Parsons Green is perfect location

WildRosie · 04/03/2022 21:04

OP. I'd be finding a divorce lawyer if I were you.

Grin someone I used to be at uni with was a Morris Dancer, she always seemed to enjoy it, I think YABU to decide he can't do it if he wants to!
Gonnagetgoing · 04/03/2022 21:06

I don’t mind Morris dancing really.

But a few years ago when my parents had a holiday home on the coast we went to the Jack in the Green festival in Hastings. We being parents, parents friends and my then boyfriend. Over the May Bank Holiday all the Morris Troupes descended on Hastings to dance and drink. Yes they’re great, yes they can drink a lot, has it put me off seeing them again at a convection?! Slightly yes..
