To think those that take their dogs shopping are selfish?

I’m fully prepared to be flamed for this, especially by the ‘I take my dog everywhere’ patrol...
I’m noticing more and more people taking thier dogs shopping, leaving them tied up outside. Not only is it not fair to those scared of dogs but it is absolutely not fair on the dogs. I have a dog, in fact I’d rather socialise with dogs more than humans however I don’t feel the need to take my dog absolutely everywhere.
Just the other day when I was leaving asda, there was a dog tied up right by the doors, he was terrified and kept blocking the doorway. One woman who you could see was clearly terrified of it actually turned around, got back in her car because she was too scared to go past it.
I wish people would understand that not everyone likes dogs... it’s selfish in my book to believe otherwise.

Personally I don’t mind if dogs come bounding up to me, I love them but I can see the point from someone who scared of them.
I can’t be the only one that thinks this?

In the country I live in dogs go inside the shops so they come with me regularly I would t leave them outside in case someone stole rhem!

@Gizacluethen That's horrible 😭 please say the poor thing survived and was ok.
Unbelievable how despicable some people can be.

Back on topic. I never take mine shopping with me, and I would never leave them tied up outside a supermarket.
I understand that someone may walk to their local grocery shop and leave their dog outside while they nip in for some milk or something, so long as it's away from the door where customers may trip over the lead or something.

@Gonnagetgoing

I know someone who takes her dog out in a special doggy pushchair (he has an issue with his legs) - mostly to the farmers market and dog friendly places.
I work in a rather large shop and the other day we noticed a woman with a dog on a lead, now unless they are assistance dogs they are not permitted, so it turns out she sneaked the dog in via a very modern doggy backpack... the worst part is when you mention to some people that we don’t allow dogs in, it’s like you’ve just asked them to murder someone... they don’t comprehend why they are not allowed.

Of course dogs can be left alone for a few hours(exception for puppies) as they are not humans. They dont need to be "entertained" by visits to pubs/restaurants as those are for humans. Take your dog to the places they belong please.
You've obviously never owned a dog who can't be left. You're wrong.
MrsBerthaRochester · 05/03/2022 21:15

If you cant leave your dog then take it to a trainer or dog behaviourist. They are not babies, they are animals and should be treated as such.

Charpick · 05/03/2022 21:22

I wouldn’t ever go to a place with my dog if she couldn’t be with me 100% of the time, don’t ever leave her in the car to do anything if I can’t see the car. Only because I’m terrified she’d be stolen.
That’s the only reason. If people have a phobia of dogs that’s not really on other people to manage. Agreed it is selfish to let your dog block an entrance or exit, same as it’s selfish for a person to do it or let their kid do it.
People will never agree on dog etiquette in public though Bear

Charpick · 05/03/2022 21:24

Yes but it’s not a problem that can be solved in one session, if you believe it can maybe you should post a link to your dog whisperer business?

BertieQueen · 05/03/2022 21:34

I have a dog that can’t be left alone so taking her shopping is great for us rather then having to pay for a dog sitter all the time. Many more shops are letting dogs in wilkos being the latest one and many pubs also.

I would never leave a dog tied up outside a shop dangerous for the dog as well as people.

I didn't say I couldn't leave mine. He does get left. Just not when we go the pub. Or on holiday.

You are wrong. Not all dogs can be left alone. Our dog has a health condition that requires 24/7 care. She can not be left alone for longer then 5 minutes.

@MrsBerthaRochester

I do not need a patronising lecture about keeping animals where they belong, thank you. If I want to take my dog to a dog friendly cafe or restaurant, then I jolly well will. Smile

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 06/03/2022 03:11

Surely if loads of people did it, the dogs could react badly to one another. Or react too well! If one person can do it, why not loads?

I just don’t think people should have to be constantly encountering dogs. A dog left outside a shop isn’t under control for one thing.

And I agree it’s not good for the dog/ dog could get stolen.

bakebeans · 07/03/2022 18:16

YANBU. I heard of som many cases during lockdown where dogs were stolen, why risk causing your dog to sit outside a shop and fret or sat in a car!
If you can’t leave your dog at home due to fear of it wrecking your house or anxiety then get a dog trainer who could help with this.
