To think those that take their dogs shopping are selfish?

I’m fully prepared to be flamed for this, especially by the ‘I take my dog everywhere’ patrol...
I’m noticing more and more people taking thier dogs shopping, leaving them tied up outside. Not only is it not fair to those scared of dogs but it is absolutely not fair on the dogs. I have a dog, in fact I’d rather socialise with dogs more than humans however I don’t feel the need to take my dog absolutely everywhere.
Just the other day when I was leaving asda, there was a dog tied up right by the doors, he was terrified and kept blocking the doorway. One woman who you could see was clearly terrified of it actually turned around, got back in her car because she was too scared to go past it.
I wish people would understand that not everyone likes dogs... it’s selfish in my book to believe otherwise.

Personally I don’t mind if dogs come bounding up to me, I love them but I can see the point from someone who scared of them.
I can’t be the only one that thinks this?

Bloke in our local charity shop t’other day has his (admittedly adorable) Scotty dog with him inside on an EXTENDING LEAD. He’s browsing the board games while his dog is two aisles away, sniffing away and tripping up every fecker with its lead.

OMG12 · 04/03/2022 14:20

I wouldn’t do it as I’d be too scared she would be stolen (suspect she would be returned quickly once they realised how high maintenance she is).

Often my son will wait outside holding her though as we often pop in to grab a few bits whilst walking.

The person who couldn’t walk past a dog on a short lead though needs to access help (in a kind way it must be very limiting for her).

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 04/03/2022 14:22

I think it is like everything - if you can do it without causing problems to others, fine. If not, dont. So you could take gods if they are not in anyones way. I have to put up with a lot of things I find distressing when I go out - rude teenagers, screaming little ones, people swearing loudly.

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 04/03/2022 14:23

Dogs, not gods. But those too.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 04/03/2022 14:28

Not as bad as those who take the dogs on the school run.
Honestly what a set of Wombles. They don't even keep them on a short lead.
Giddy children, small pavements, poorly sized entrances to the playground, what could possibly be wrong.
'Get down shep'. Hmm

MysteryFog60 · 04/03/2022 14:28

Op, I don't understand why people trail their dogs to the shops. It surely cannot be pleasant for either the dog or other shoppers and I don't like dogs in cafes/restaurants at all.

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 04/03/2022 14:28

I realised I didn’t make it clear, I’m talking actual high street shopping, and if your just popping in to shop on the way home for a walk then fair enough as long the dog isn’t blocking or hindering the exit or entrance in any way. I work on a high street and the amount of dogs I’ve seen getting taken along shopping is quite astonishing.

@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping

Surely the risk of it being stolen just isn't worth it?
You;d think so, wouldn't you?
ukborn · 04/03/2022 14:32

I agree. I have two and I wouldn't leave them tied up anywhere, for one thing they wouldn't know what is going on and the female might get really stressed.
But I can see if you are just popping to the corner shop is one thing - can't imagine taking it to Tesco superstore!
But I really don't understand people taking their dogs to crowded fairs or outdoor shopping centres. The dogs look completely confused at the rush of people snd being dragged here and there.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 04/03/2022 14:36

I tend to take my dog out and about with me as it kills 2 birds with one stone. He only goes into dog friendly places and I never leave him alone outside. But he does come into some shops, cafes and pubs where he is allowed

Or people taking their dogs to fireworks displays!

Pointless posting about dogs on here as folk are to cunty about it. Especially the "I love my dog more than my kids" twats.
Yanbu. Dogs dont need to be taken to the shops. Or pubs or restaurants. Drives me nuts.

No one needs to go to the pub. But when we do we take our dog, who doesn't need to... But likes it. Like us 😘

We once walked past a shop with a dog tied up outside,it was laid down-we walked past and the dog just leapt up and bit my dd’s knee
Ruined her new jeans and broke her skin-blood everywhere
The owner came wandering out seconds later, grabbed her dog, looked at my dd who was in tears with pain, blood and the fact her new jeans where ruined and said ‘oh,he’s never done that before’ and walked off
No ‘are you ok?’ Or ‘I’m sorry’
She just grabbed the lead and walked off

Another time we went to Asda and someone had left two massive dogs tied up just outside the main doors
These two dogs where growling, lunging and snarling at everyone who walked past
The owners had to be called out of the shop and couldn’t see the problem-in fact they where kicking off at the fact everyone wanted to go in without the risk of getting bitten-everyone else where being unreasonable

If I have my childrens dogs with me I either leave them at home or go on the walk with someone who can wait with the dogs while I nip in so at least they are not unattended outside

Mercurial123 · 04/03/2022 14:48

It could be worse for you OP. The dogs could INSIDE the shops. YABU because this comes up all the time, dogs in shops, dogs in cafes etc, etc.

MrsBerthaRochester · 04/03/2022 14:51

Thankfully many pubs and restaurants still wont allow dogs in so I happily frequent them as I prefer to eat my dinner without slobbering dogs sniffing round.

ScrumptiousBears · 04/03/2022 14:52

I was in John Lewis the other day. 3 dogs in there in a small area barking at each other, pulling on the lead etc. Owners thought is was hilarious but no one else could get passed. It's a busy place anyway but this just made i worse.

FangsForTheMemory · 04/03/2022 14:54

YANBU. I used to walk my landlady's rather valuable dog and dared not leave her outside a shop for more than about two minutes. In these days of widespread dog theft, I wonder at people who do this.

The only pub I know you aren't allowed dogs in is wetherspoons. If it's just a boozer dogs are allowed in most. At home and when we go travelling around the country. And it's becoming way more common in pubs that's do food too.
FangsForTheMemory · 04/03/2022 14:56

@AllThingsServeTheBeam So your dog goes into the pub with you and says 'I'll have a pint and a bag of pork scratchings. Your turn to buy,' does it?

He has a bag of pork scratchings yes! And loads of fuss from the landlords who have befriended him

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2022 14:59

Generally not shops, but pubs/cafes if you're in an outdoorsy/touristy area you may want/need to if you don't want to live on sandwiches when you're on holiday or out for the day.

Some pubs and cafes display the price of a sausage for the dog, or sell biscuits/treats.Grin

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 04/03/2022 15:02

Loads of shops here allow dogs inside, so if I'm out and need something, I'll take him in with me rather than leave him in the car.

If I can't take him inside, I'll go home, drop him off and come back alone.

CounsellorTroi · 04/03/2022 15:05

I go into dog friendly pubs and restaurants all the time and never encountered any making a nuisance of themselves. Most of them are just chilling under their owner’s table.
