To think those that take their dogs shopping are selfish?

I’m fully prepared to be flamed for this, especially by the ‘I take my dog everywhere’ patrol...
I’m noticing more and more people taking thier dogs shopping, leaving them tied up outside. Not only is it not fair to those scared of dogs but it is absolutely not fair on the dogs. I have a dog, in fact I’d rather socialise with dogs more than humans however I don’t feel the need to take my dog absolutely everywhere.
Just the other day when I was leaving asda, there was a dog tied up right by the doors, he was terrified and kept blocking the doorway. One woman who you could see was clearly terrified of it actually turned around, got back in her car because she was too scared to go past it.
I wish people would understand that not everyone likes dogs... it’s selfish in my book to believe otherwise.

Personally I don’t mind if dogs come bounding up to me, I love them but I can see the point from someone who scared of them.
I can’t be the only one that thinks this?

It’s not unreasonable to take well behaved dogs to shops and other places that allow them. The businesses have presumably made a decision to allow dogs and would ban them (other than service dogs) if they felt dogs shouldn’t be there.

But it is unreasonable to take them to places that don’t allow them so the poor things have to be tied up outside. It’s also stupid given the rise in dog thefts.

RoastedFerret · 04/03/2022 15:08

I can't get worked up about this. I wouldn't leave my dog tied up somewhere in case they were stolen but I'm not bothered if someone else does, it's their business really. I also can't get worked up about people with phobias not being able to walk past a dog, again that's their business.

Prescottdanni123 · 04/03/2022 15:12

I'd never leave my dog tied up outside a shop. The number of dog thefts has risen quite a bit since lockdown and it would be so easy for someone to nab her while I was in the shop.

Dogs are being ripped away from their owners who are knocked to the ground to prevent them chasing the thieves, leaving a dog tied up outside a shop is asking for trouble.

They are either taken to be sold on, or depending on the type of dog, used as bait for fighting.

Please don't leave your dogs alone outside shops.

One poor woman was knocked to the ground and her rescue dog was stolen, I can't forget the image of the poor dog and imagine the pain of the owner.

I also remember an old dog being taken and thrown down a bank when the thieves realised he/she was to old to be of any use. Maybe the one mentioned above.

Dog walker vans are stolen with the dogs inside, people just don't realise what evil scum there are, waiting to steal their pets.

I have no real feelings about it as an adult but as a child, it would have been traumatising and so I’m sure my mum would’ve hated it. I had a terrible phobia of dogs. I’d run out into traffic to avoid them.

Bearnecessity · 04/03/2022 15:18

I was in town the other week in a small gift shop with a woman and her two massive dogs getting under everyone's feet, got out side more dogs dominating paths with their owners, more dogs down the path and more dogs down the path on a chocker Saturday with pavements heaving with folk...

I love dogs my own jack included....I don't mind the odd pooch in a cafe here and there but so many people have dogs now it is too much. The dogs look as miserable as anything ....my own dog hates going into town loves a field or wood tho'... where they should be...

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 04/03/2022 15:20

YANBU
Massively irresponsible of owners to leave dogs unattended in a public place - risk of theft & injury to people is high.

Spidey66 · 04/03/2022 15:23

I’d only do it outside my local corner shop if I was on my way back from a walk and nipping in for milk or bread. I can see her at all times. Wouldn’t leave her outside a supermarket, no. I’d worry more about her being stolen tbh

ExConstance · 04/03/2022 15:24

I'd be far too frightened of my dog being stolen to leave er outside a shop, just imagine if your dog was taken to be abused as a bait dog - terrible.
I think it is very good that John Lewis, most garden centres and increasing numbers of pubs allow dogs, if I was more confident mine would behave herself completely I'd certainly take her.

MrsBerthaRochester · 04/03/2022 15:28

I live in a large city and no most pubs/restaurants here do not allow dogs. Some allow them if they have a beer garden and the others are what I would class as old mens pubs.
There is absolutely no need to take your dog to a restaurant. They are not children and can be left at home.

When you're on holiday and want to eat out there is need. And not all dogs can actually be left for that long.

I hate leaving our dog outside the shop, I usually only call in shop with dog if I'm with our eldest or dh. I'm the same with the school run, have tried to kill 2 birds with 1 stone but she yaps and stresses if I leave her at the gates so I walk her before I collect the kids.

MrsBerthaRochester · 04/03/2022 16:45

Of course dogs can be left alone for a few hours(exception for puppies) as they are not humans. They dont need to be "entertained" by visits to pubs/restaurants as those are for humans.
Take your dog to the places they belong please.

MrsBerthaRochester · 04/03/2022 16:46

At my kids school there is a large sign saying dogs cannot be left tied up at school gates or enter the playground. Very sensible.

Many holiday cottages and hotels don't allow you to leave your dogs unattended.
Gonnagetgoing · 04/03/2022 16:50

Ah tied up outside... I thought you meant inside. Recently I was at a cafe and a woman stood next to me and then this dog reared its head up out of a bag and sort of growled (at me?!) - she was really nice and just said 'stop it!' and apologised to me but I had no idea there was a dog in her bag!

Gonnagetgoing · 04/03/2022 16:51

I used to leave my Labrador tied up outside the supermarket or corner shop in the 80s because there was nowhere to leave her and they had dog tie 'rings' for leads outside the supermarket. I was never that long though.

Soubriquet · 04/03/2022 16:51

I think well behaved dogs should be allowed in shops

I went to Cornwall years ago and it was so dog friendly it was amazing

Gonnagetgoing · 04/03/2022 16:53

I know someone who takes her dog out in a special doggy pushchair (he has an issue with his legs) - mostly to the farmers market and dog friendly places.

@Soubriquet but how can you tell if they're well behaved? I mean most I've seen are but what if they're not?
ABitBesotted · 04/03/2022 16:54

I wouldn't risk my pup being stolen.

If someone who lives alone can't get their groceries delivered, though, what alternative do they have?

Cherrysoup · 04/03/2022 16:55

There’s no way I’d leave my dog outside, I’m far too worried he’d be nicked. I think it’s a bit stupid.

I get a bit miffed at the parents in the playground leaving their dog to amuse itself (attack mine) outside and call it a walk.

TheHoptimist · 04/03/2022 17:16

My dog loves shopping, I dont tie her up but she goes into shops with me (not supermarkets). Fenwicks is her favourite (we walk there- 4 mile walk with a shop in the middle)

Xpologog · 04/03/2022 17:26

Downright stupid leaving a dog tied up outside a shop. Easily stolen and as it’s supposed to have a tag on with address and contact number, just asking for ransom demand.

Prescottdanni123 · 04/03/2022 17:28

@MrsBerthaRochester

Yes - but if I'm on a day out and have my dog in tow and want to have lunch out then I will take her in a dog friendly cafe or restaurant. There are plenty of alternatives that don't allow dogs for people that don't like them.

Heck, even if I'm just going for a meal out, I sometimes take the dog if I'm meeting up with fellow dog lovers. The pubs and restaurants I usually go to have dogs at 9 out of every ten tables.
