DH says I’m a baby for wanting to see GP for ear infection

I’ve had a cold all week, standard stuff, but in the last 48 hours it’s gone all to my sinuses and ears. I woke up Wednesday night with horrible ear ache in one ear. It’s only got worse and I’m now totally deaf in said ear, can’t lie on that side for the pain, etc. I’ve not slept at all due to the pain and discomfort. DH says I’m mad to bother the GP with it as it’s “just” an ear infection and I need to tough it out. I understand protecting the nhs and I barely go to the doctors ever other than for pill checks and smears. I’m just really struggling and exhausted. What do I do?

Go to the Dr's for gods sake it could damage your hearing.
Please can I come over, give him a hefty kick in the bollocks and then tell him to tough it out!!!
Is he always such a bully.

blancowhite · 04/03/2022 07:10

@Ohtheaudacity

Would I be unreasonable to attempt to pop my ears, like you would on an aeroplane? Would that help or hinder all this?!
Could go either way. So I wouldn't risk it personally.

I don't understand people like your husband to be honest. You have something that's causing you pain and could quite easily be healed by taking a medicine. The doctor is there precisely to give you that medicine, so why would you not go to the doctor? It's presumably just a toxic masculinity thing. Man up and take the pain even though there's zero reason to do so.

Go to Gp - Dh had a mild one that lingered all through the pandemic.

Then it got really bad and he was told it was on the point of infecting the bone of his skull.

Comtesse · 04/03/2022 07:12

And this is one of the reasons men have shorter life expectancy than women because some men are too stubborn and proud and ridiculous to go to the doctors when they should (idiots)…..

Ganymedemoon · 04/03/2022 07:12

I didn't go to the GP once for a bad ear ache that was an infection and I ended up with a perforated ear drum and am now partially deaf in that ear. Go to the GP!

SayMumOneMoreTime · 04/03/2022 07:12

I would say don't try and pop your ears, the danger is bursting ear drums. Another poster mentioned bell's palsy, my uncle ignored an ear infection and ended up with this on both sides of his face. 20 years later he still doesn't have full control of his facial muscles. You should take it seriously.

Palmtree9 · 04/03/2022 07:13

The GP is there for when people are sick. If you think you might have an ear infection go and get it checked out, last thing you want is it to get worse!

WarriorN · 04/03/2022 07:14

If there's any worry/ doubt about your baby, re illness, ALWAYS check with Gp.

They never mind checking and would rather there's nothing wrong. Also babies can go down hill very quickly.

Discodancinggiraffe · 04/03/2022 07:15

He is an idiot. My DH had a very painful ear infection during lockdown. He could not see a Dr. He did get several phone consultations and antibiotics. But that did not work. After a year my DH had lost his hearing in that ear, the Dr finally saw my DH in person and sent him to the consultant asap. The infection had caused bigger problems, his ear drum had burst at some point and there was something growing in there that needed to be popped. So don't ignore an ear infection.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/03/2022 07:16

Your DP has clearly never had an ear infection! Of course you need to see the GP.

Herald44 · 04/03/2022 07:17

I had this last week. I toughed it out for several days on ibuprofen then called the GP. 2 min phone call, he prescribed antibiotics and once I started taking them it felt better within 24 hours! You don't have to suffer!

NameChanger45465465 · 04/03/2022 07:18

Book an appointment. But I would suggest the chemist first of your GP wait times are anything like mine !

Olive oil in the ear may soothe it until you can see someone.

Your DP is a moron.

3luckystars · 04/03/2022 07:21

This is a great lesson for you. For the rest of your life, Ignore everything he says when it comes to health, especially with regards to the children. You will have to be twice as strong when the children are ill.

Of course you should see a doctor. All the best.

LadyPropane · 04/03/2022 07:21

If you have an actual health problem then it isn't wasting resources to go to the GP. Your DH sounds like a martyr and a whinge bag.

Bajezzeuz · 04/03/2022 07:22

He's not being very kind is he! Get yourself to the GP

I've had earache once in my entire life and I'll never forget it, it was one of the worst pains I've ever had to deal with and I've given birth 3 times!

Clarinet1 · 04/03/2022 07:22

As a veteran of many ear infections I really understand what you’re going through. Definitely contact the GP. They may decide you need antibiotics and can give you stronger pain killers than you can get over the counter if necessary. Also, as PP have said, a perforated eardrum could have long-term consequences for your hearing. I hope you’re not letting DH make important decisions about your health and that you feel better soon!

Bambozled33 · 04/03/2022 07:23

Go to the doctors! Ear ache is horrendous. Can only presume your DH has never had proper ear ache!

Shoxfordian · 04/03/2022 07:24

Go to the doctors
He sounds very uncaring, is he usually such a dick?

Peccary · 04/03/2022 07:25

Go! I have permanent hearing loss in one ear (not complete, about 50%) from an infection following a cold. I did go to the GP but too late

Holothane · 04/03/2022 07:25

Wait till he gets one oh my god it will be the biggest pain he’s ever had of course. He’s out of order saying this.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 04/03/2022 07:26

I’m a GP. Ear infections are frigging agony and, as PPs have said, can occasionally have serious complications. It’s very sensible to go to the GP. You won’t necessarily need antibiotics, because it may be viral, but it’s worth getting it checked out.

Hope you feel better soon.

heyitsthistle · 04/03/2022 07:28

Tell your DH to bugger off... really loudly, as you can't hear in one ear.

OvertheRainbow2U · 04/03/2022 07:31

don't pop the ears - could cause further pain or damage - listen to the wise hashbrown! Hope you get the help needed and feel better soon x

timeisnotaline · 04/03/2022 07:33

Get it treated. Then tell dh that to keep him happy you are going to pretend you didn’t go to the drs so as far as hes concerned you’ve gone deaf for the next 12 months from leaving it untreated. Then ignore everything he says.

Mindymomo · 04/03/2022 07:35

Definitely go to gp, don’t do anything with ear in the meantime. They may suggest a swab is taken to see if you have a fungal infection or bacterial infection. Then the right medication can be given. Please don’t leave it, if it’s bacterial it’s unlikely to go away on it’s own. Your DH obviously hasn’t ever had earache, else he would know the pain.
