Was just talking to a friend and we're having a banana off. I say the best time to eat a banana is the first day you buy them when they're not really ripe whilst they say to leave them for as long as posibu WIBU?

Unripe bananas are revolting. They need to be just getting a few brown spots on the skin.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 03/03/2022 22:18

See I can't stand the brown spots to me when they appear that's when they're starting to get too far along

Strange, I was talking to my friend about this yesterday! I also prefer them when they are just ripe/tiny bit green.

DramaAlpaca · 03/03/2022 22:20

I'm with @FrustratedTeddyLamp. I'll only eat bananas that have just turned yellow. The least hint of a brown spot and they are too ripe for me.

labyrinthlaziness · 03/03/2022 22:21

You are wrong op, sorry to break it to you.

olaamigo · 03/03/2022 22:22

Just verging on yellow for me. There still needs to be a hint of green.

3 or 4 for me.

There’s a brief but perfect spot when they’re exactly the right level of ripe. The older ones are for banana bread.

olaamigo · 03/03/2022 22:23

Although the brown spot would be removed.

And NEVER do I eat the ends.

RoyKentsChestHair · 03/03/2022 22:23

Same here! The minute they get a hint of a brown spot they’re only good for smoothies and milkshakes. Once they get a few brown spots they’re destined for a banana loaf. I can only eat them ‘au naturel’ when they’re entirely yellow/green and a bit crunchy! I can tell when I’m peeling it from the texture of the skin - if it goes thin and floppy when you pull it back instead of stiff and thick they’re no good! Also a useful rule of thumb for other activities.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 03/03/2022 22:24

@olaamigo bringing the diagram. I'm 2-4 althiugh have ventured to 1 before.

3 or 4 for me.

Me too, number 3 is a perfect banana.

RoyKentsChestHair · 03/03/2022 22:25

I’d probably eat a 5 at a push - but 3 or 4 is ideal. I’ve never seen a 1 and would probably leave a 2 for an extra day or two! But 5+ are for baking and smoothies.

biggreenhouse · 03/03/2022 22:25

4-5 for me on that graphic

ClemFandangoo · 03/03/2022 22:26

I prefer them slightly green and hard, DH likes them with too many brown spots on, when they start to go all claggy and weird tasting. 😊 So guess who eats more bananas? 🤣

He is right though they are much better for you with brown spots on but they just don’t taste right!

ThanksItHasPockets · 03/03/2022 22:28

Ugh, I had a housemate who would eat all of the bananas at no 2 before anybody else got a look-in. Green bananas are mealy and horrible.

ClemFandangoo · 03/03/2022 22:28

On this indicator I go for a 3. DH must be on a 9 or 10 😬

Bananas in this house are divisive!
Me: never eat the things
DS2: green and yellow. Any hint of brown inside over ripe.
DS1: yellow with the very occasional brown fleck
DH: totally yellow and brown - 7 as a minimum on that diagram.

We share a bunch well!

Yika · 03/03/2022 22:30

Gosh no. All kinds of wrong! Only the 6 and 7 are edible in that diagram. Hate the slimy feeling of a slightly green banana. A ripe one is nice and sweet.

Oooh I think the brown spotted ones are slimy! It’s like the banana inside starts to disintegrate and goes all mushy 🤮
GraffitiNob · 03/03/2022 22:32

2 or 3, 4 at a real push.

My biggest problem is how unpredictable fruit is, one the whole.

I'm aware it's quite an ND thing because of the unpredictability of texture etc. But sometimes my preferred apple breed tastes funny. Sometimes my strawberries are watery, or I bite them and they're actually a bit soft. I won't even go into my problems with citrus fruits.

So it's understandable that I'm a 2-3 banana person.

VenezuelaChant · 03/03/2022 22:33

5-7, you weirdos.

I’m the same! Cherry tomatoes for me are the worst. Sometimes I bite into one and it’s not just watery and squishy but it tastes bitter too and I’ve actually stopped eating them now just in case I get a weird one 🤮🤮🤮
labyrinthlaziness · 03/03/2022 22:35

1-3 are inedible, 4 will be disappointing, 5-7 pleasant.

Houseplantmad · 03/03/2022 22:35

3
I can't bear the smell of overripe bananas. Yellow with a slight resistance in the flesh upon biting is perfect.

Houseplantmad · 03/03/2022 22:36

@ClemFandangoo you need to try Vittoria tomatoes from Sainsburys. Small, sweet and so delicious all year round.
