Was just talking to a friend and we're having a banana off. I say the best time to eat a banana is the first day you buy them when they're not really ripe whilst they say to leave them for as long as posibu WIBU?
@ClemFandangoo you need to try Vittoria tomatoes from Sainsburys. Small, sweet and so delicious all year round.
Thank you I will Smile

5 and 6 are perfect. I'd eat 4 and 7 at a push.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 03/03/2022 22:39

3-4, maybe 5 at a push. Anything else is gross

SwedishEdith · 03/03/2022 22:40

God, I get horrible heartburn at unripe bananas. 6 or 7 are the best for me - especially squashed onto a banana and peanut butter sandwich.

SquirrelFan · 03/03/2022 22:40

6 - I really don't think any stage earlier is "food" and 7+ is fit only for banana bread.

LuaDipa · 03/03/2022 22:41

3 or 4 here, but I would prefer 2 to 5. I find bananas far too sweet when ripe.

WhatNoReally · 03/03/2022 22:41

I can't believe so many people eat, what I consider 'raw' bananas (I know they're all raw!)

Svara · 03/03/2022 22:43

@labyrinthlaziness

1-3 are inedible, 4 will be disappointing, 5-7 pleasant.
Agree. I'd pick 6 as my perfect eating banana. I like them at least 7 before freezing for smoothies. I buy bananas when I still have most of last week's bunch left due to the wait!
nongnangning · 03/03/2022 22:44

I think the greener the banana the more resistant starch it has ie the less it raises your blood sugar

luxxlisbon · 03/03/2022 22:44

3 for me on that chart, any more ripe and I even hate touching them.
I hardly ever eat bananas, occasionally I don’t mine a slightly green and almost crisp one but I think I’m scared from the brown spotted smushed bananas lying in the bottom of my school bag getting bruised from all the books.

MurmuratingStarling · 03/03/2022 22:45

Bananas are a bit shit really. They are OK but have a very small window to eat them and enjoy them.

They're either too green and hard and make your mouth feel all dried out/like you've been sucking a lemon, OR they're yakky, and brownish, and sloppy, and smell and taste pungent. BLEH! Shock

Most of the time they're OK for 2-3 days tops. Whereas many other fruits - apples, pears, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, peaches, grapes etc, are good for a week to ten days.

mrsfollowill · 03/03/2022 22:47

There is someone I work with (well used to when we worked in an office- we have been WFH for 2 years and no plans to go back!) and everyone used to donate over ripe bananas to her as she loved them- I swear they would be a 10 on that picture- fully black and squashy. She kept them in her desk drawer and they stank! Personally cannot even eat one whatever the stage as they are the devils food in my eyes- hideous! Grin

RaininSummer · 03/03/2022 22:49

Only like numbers 5, 6 and 7. Will eat a 4 if desperate for a nana.

ThurstonArmbrister · 03/03/2022 22:53

YABU OP. Overripe >>>> underripe. Anything below a 4 on that chart and they have crunchy and bitter components that don't belong in a banana.

5 to 7. I am old enough to remember when you could only get them with a green ration book (under 5s). My brother was born when I was 5, and the local greengrocer would hang a bunch at the front of the shop when he had them in stock. If I saw them on the bus home from school I would tell my mother and she would put my brother in his pram and we would set off for the greengrocer's. I still love them; had one this evening.

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 03/03/2022 22:57

Crunchy? I don't think I've ever had a banana that had hardish Lumps! They just keep their own shape without being squishy 🙂

Really? I've had loads of them and usually end up spitting the lumps out.
TheNestedIf · 03/03/2022 23:11

The best day is when they're at day 6 - 7 in the diagram posted by @olaamigo. After that, you can still freeze them, blend them, and turn them into banana "ice-cream" for a few days.

I would eat day 2 - 4, but only in a curry.

1000umbrellas · 03/03/2022 23:12

I definitely prefer the riper end of the spectrum but all you green banana eaters will be pleased to know you're getting more of the banana's gut-healthy prebiotics. Smile

inappropriateraspberry · 03/03/2022 23:19

Yellow with a tint of green! Not too green or the dry your mouth out, not too yellow or they're too soft!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 03/03/2022 23:25

@olaamigo

Just verging on yellow for me. There still needs to be a hint of green.

3 or 4 for me.

3 or 4 too. Anything beyond that is gross and before that is claggy on the teeth.

Basically, bananas have a 2 day window of edibility.

I'm with you there. Utterly gross.
