Am I the only one who wound up by this!

I know I probably am BU but it really winds me up how people use 'brought' instead of 'bought' -the verb to bring and to buy are completely different and have different meanings it's not hard to use the right one!!
The other one that really winds me up is how a lot of people use' I should of' instead of 'I should have' -of is not a replacement for have it's just wrong!
Is it just me? What other common errors annoy you?

I get annoyed with "and I" when it should be "and me", and I see it all the time on Mumsnet.

"DH and I bought lunch" is correct because if you take DH away it makes sense.

"Someone bought lunch for DH and I" is wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong! If you take DH away it doesn't makes sense! It's "someone bought lunch for DH and me"!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/03/2022 21:11

Could of, should of, would of, abit, alot ect etc etc.

tearinghairout · 03/03/2022 21:11

There's a Pedants Corner for this. You'd love it! And you're not wrong. Could of, I was sat, etc etc. Whom instead of who. I could go on. And on.

TonkaTruckduck · 03/03/2022 21:12

The thing that annoys me most is myself used incorrectly e.g "fill the form in and return it to myself". Makes the users sounds absolutely stupid, but they think they sound very clever.

Conversating instead of conversing

Becclescake · 03/03/2022 21:16

Have seen more and more people use 'a' in place of 'an' and it gives me the rage

HundredMilesAnHour · 03/03/2022 21:19

She borrowed me money rather than she lent me money. Argh!!

And of course "my bad". Angry

Mummytotwogirls01 · 03/03/2022 21:25

@HundredMilesAnHour -i agree - this is another one 'she learned me' ahhhh learned is a passive verb you learn she taught! 'Can I lend a pen' to lend is an active verb - 'can I borrow a pen' or 'can you lend me a pen'!!

These things are a bit annoying OP but that's the internet for you. Chat rooms and SM etc have always been like this and always will be.

However, I have to take issue with your statement....

it's not hard to use the right one!!

I don't think that's for you to decide as many people will find it hard for different reasons.

Morgan12 · 03/03/2022 21:27

Macdonalds is the one I hate the most.

Cocycola · 03/03/2022 22:07

I can't stand the 'should/could/would of' when should be should/could/would have'.

Or when people type defiantly for definitely.

Bintymcbintface · 03/03/2022 23:16

No it winds me up to and I have to fight the urge to correct it, each and every time.

OwlinaTree · 03/03/2022 23:19

No doesn't bother me on planes like Mumsnet. It's very rare that I can't actually understand what the writer is trying to say.

It would make me raise an eyebrow in a work situation I expect.

OwlinaTree · 03/03/2022 23:20

places like Mumsnet not planesGrin

Hawkins001 · 03/03/2022 23:21

My own grammer,.I know it needs improving, but usually I'm busy with other topics.

WomanStanleyWoman · 04/03/2022 00:46

‘Off of’. It’s just off!!!

‘Done’ when you mean ‘did’ or ‘them’ when you mean ‘those’. As in when Olly Murs briefly took over from Dermot on The X-Factor and kept asking the singers ‘So, do you think you done a good job? What did you think of them comments from the judges?’

‘First come, first serve’. ServeD, ServeD! Serve doesn’t even make sense!

‘The proof’s in the pudding’. No - the proof OF the pudding is in the eating!!

XenoBitch · 04/03/2022 00:51

Same.

It is rare that a grammar mistake leads to a whole new meaning... and even then, most people will know what the OP meant anyway.

This is MN, not an academic essay.

JustLyra · 04/03/2022 01:02

it's not hard to use the right one!!

It’s not difficult for you, it is for many.

Nobody actually chooses to be poor at literacy, dyslexic, have a poor school etc.

Being sneery, especially the faux “I don’t understand, where did you bring your house from” posts, is actively a choice. And says far more about a persons character than poor grammar or spelling ever does.

cantbecoping · 04/03/2022 01:03

Draws!!! I put them in the draw! Chest of draws. The draw was stuck. Knicker draw.

The word is DRAWER!

Arrrghhhh!

Holskey · 04/03/2022 01:06

Oh absolutely 'off of'. Just so unnecessary!

'Would of' etc always stands out to me.

As above, 'I' in object position instead of 'me' (nobody would ever say 'he gave it to I' yet 'he gave it to John and I' is ridiculously common).

'Yourself' is a reflexive pronoun and should only be used when 'you' is the subject. (Like 'myself' above.) I think people do this to sound less direct e.g. 'I sent it to yourself'.

I still like the less/fewer distinction but I realise that battle is lost. Five items or fewer!

Similarly, I distinguish between who/whom but that's almost vanished too.

Slightly unrelated, but I became irrationally angry earlier when I read a thread in which someone repeatedly said they 'bipped' another driver. I can't explain why I hate it so much. Beeped. You beeped. Sounded your horn even. Bipped? What a horrible word.

I admit I'm highly strung.

allinadaystwerk · 04/03/2022 01:08

Should of drives me nuts! I see people who should know better doing it. How? How can you read it and say "yep... Good sentence I did there"

etulosba · 04/03/2022 01:18

but it really winds me up how people use 'brought' instead of 'bought'

I think it is regional. I have noticed that it is very common in the general Birmingham area.

k1233 · 04/03/2022 01:25

I get annoyed at people claiming grammatical superiority. Really, if you can infer the meaning from the context of what is being said, what's the problem? Lower your stress by not worrying about the grammatical errors made by others. You're probably making errors yourself.
