Am I the only one who wound up by this!

I know I probably am BU but it really winds me up how people use 'brought' instead of 'bought' -the verb to bring and to buy are completely different and have different meanings it's not hard to use the right one!!
The other one that really winds me up is how a lot of people use' I should of' instead of 'I should have' -of is not a replacement for have it's just wrong!
Is it just me? What other common errors annoy you?

OP posts:
lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 04/03/2022 05:57

OP not meant in any way other than how you read it. I used to think exactly the same way as you, but then I realised I was unfairly judging people.

On an open forum like this there will be people from diverse backgrounds, and grammatical errors are not an issue as long as you can understand the person. People in a hurry, dyslexic people, people for whom English isn't their first language, people with learning difficulties or who for whatever reason didn't have a great education. It's no reflection on intelligence in my opinion.

However I do let rip if i see it in an advert / signage of a large company or in print where there are teams of editorial staff whose job it is to correct this kind of thing.

Tashface · 04/03/2022 05:58

Not a spelling or grammar error because I think it's bang out of order to mock others for that, but I will add:-

'Pissed' instead of 'pissed off' ("I was pissed at him"). When said by a British person.

FirmButFairMum · 04/03/2022 05:58

When I receive an email and they spell my forename wrong. It’s right there in front of you in my email address!

MinnieMountain · 04/03/2022 05:59

“Can I get?” when ordering something.

labyrinthlaziness · 04/03/2022 05:59

None of it winds me up.

I personally think pedants have issues that are best discussed with therapists, they are either judgemental or have perfectionist tendencies, neither of which are healthy.

pictish · 04/03/2022 06:16

What about seen in place of saw?
I seen my friend last night.
Or done in place of did?
I done a spin class.

NO! You SAW your friend last night and DID a spin class.

I wouldn’t mind but people write it that way as well! Gaaah.

Bookworm65 · 04/03/2022 06:19

Was sat, was stood, have wrote.

Onlyhuman123 · 04/03/2022 06:23

I want to loose weight....dear god, its LOSE!!

am I aloud to do that?....erm, its ALLOWED

should of instead of should have.

Argh!!!

This drives me nuts...I have a name that could be spelt a variety of ways however in an email, they can clear see how it is spelt from the email address and from my standard signature...but no, always have to spell it a different way!! 🙄

Ohh ha ha. I’m sure you’re pernickety about something seemingly trivial too. Maybe you’re one of those freaks on here that washes a towel every single time you use it because anything else is ‘just lazy’ or whatever. Everyone has peeves. Everyone. But you pat yourself on the back there.
ChessieFL · 04/03/2022 06:32

My boss annoys me - she will say/write things like ‘needs done’ or ‘needs reviewed’ instead of ‘needs reviewing’ or needs to be reviewed’. I’ve seen people on here say this is a Scottish thing (she is Scottish, I’m not) but it does seem to be becoming more common as I’ve seen it a lot in here too. I wouldn’t mind but she does it in professional documents so I’m always having to correct it!

Most of the other things mentioned on here too. I wouldn’t ever correct anyone on an informal forum like Mumsnet (unless they were being an arse or judging someone else’s SPAG) but I do correct things at work.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/03/2022 06:57

All of the above, and ‘lay’ instead of ‘lie’, as in, ‘I went for a lay down on the bed.’

Discrete when they mean discreet is another - they have entirely different meanings.

I’ve only ever pointed out a mistake once, though, and that was on a largely male forum when someone had pointed out someone else’s mistake - and made a basic mistake in his own post. I did enjoy that.😈

Wilkolampshade · 04/03/2022 07:04

'Pack' lunch.
Ugh.

Howshouldibehave · 04/03/2022 07:13

Cue/que/queue is another one.

My DH was being an arse, que him stropping about.

The woman behind me in the que started on me.

Howshouldibehave · 04/03/2022 07:13

And saying haitch for the letter ‘h’ Grin

PepaMadrigal · 04/03/2022 07:15

Are you me?! This is my biggest grammar bugbear. It sounds so unbelievably thick 😂 Unfortunately where I live it’s regional, so I hear it all the time. It’s not even just spoken but written as well. I probably just need to get off Facebook….

PAFMO · 04/03/2022 07:18

@tearinghairout

There's a Pedants Corner for this. You'd love it! And you're not wrong. Could of, I was sat, etc etc. Whom instead of who. I could go on. And on.
Pedants' Corner is to discuss language quirks, not take the piss out of other people's SPaG, though over the last couple of years it has been taken over a bit by people who want to do that.
PAFMO · 04/03/2022 07:18

You should perhaps look up the origins. Northern Ireland shibboleths and sectarianism is a good place to start.

You're allowed to point out mistakes when the maker of the mistake is being smug about other people's English. And there will always be one. Wink It's Muphry's Law with a pinch of Dunning-Kruger and it's deeply satisfying.

You beat me to it! Que isn't even a word in the English dictionary.

I pride myself as a grammar pedant so was suitably chastened when I was sent a link to "using that v when". I'd been writing sentences such as "This credit card is currently offering X thousand Avios, which is the highest in a year".

Ignoring the very tedious content, I've become sufficiently paranoid to stop using which altogether.

red321 · 04/03/2022 07:23

Sorry, that v which.

birdlawyerr · 04/03/2022 07:26

@Mummytotwogirls01

Admittedly the title should probably say am I the only one 'who's' wound up by this -typo! Xx
The irony but now that you’ve experienced the other side, maybe don’t get wound up so much!
Hyenaormeercat · 04/03/2022 07:27

All of the above...the bought and brought is one that seems to have crept in in the last few years. I sit on my hands when reading FB..

Thatsplentyjack · 04/03/2022 07:30

New newest and most annoying at the moment is "myself", "yourself" etc. Instead of just me or you. Drives me mad.

Also adding an R Into things when it's not supposed yo be there. I've actually seen people on here do it on the baby names board ffs! I know, I know in their regional accent it sounds the same as if there was no R but surely they know how to spell the bloody word!

PAFMO · 04/03/2022 07:32

@red321

Sorry, that v which.
You used it correctly in your sentence. "Which" if there's a comma, "that" if there isn't. (comma + relative clause adding extra information which is not essential to the understanding of the sentence)
