Managers reprimanding staff members on first day in a humiliating way. Not to me as I would have walked immediately.

@AlisonDonut

The thing that worries me is the HR department(4 people) is in a cliche with Management so I am not sure how any complaints would be handled? The HR creeps up to Management and send barking emails to the underdogs.

HR's job is to keep the company out of court.

It is not there for any other reason.

It's best to remember that with any employer.

^^ This.

HR aren’t a form of policing of management for your benefit. They work for the company for the company’s benefit and follow the dictates of the company leadership. They are only concerned with staff not being happy if it’s going to have a detrimental impact on the company’s goals. And they tend to be fairly low down the pecking order so they frequently have limited influence even when they do see something that may have a detrimental impact unless it’s in line with priorities or concerns already raised by senior leadership.

Humiliation on day one leads to god knows what on day x. I have been physically punished in a job, in this day and age, in London! I knew they did that sort of thing, but I managed to avoid it for 5 years, but eventually it was my turn, and I was pretty much traumatised and had to leave employment entirely for several months.

Leave

Wtf? Physically punished?

FWIW I left a job on day one. Various reasons to do with it not being the job I applied for , split shifts that were never mentioned in the interview process and itchy uniform.

Another was so boring I fell asleep and didnt want to go back to do that again. Left at the end of the day never went back.
Another I had bad feelings about but stayed until I found another job, 6 months. I cried every night cos I hated it so much.

I had a temp job once. Was welcomed into by the boss at the beginning. All good. Sat at the desk. Five minutes later, another employee turns up to be told, 'you finished yesterday.' (It dawned on me that I was sitting in her desk, well certainly where she was sitting yesterday.)

She asked why and just got told that's what your agency is for. Your agency should have told you. She said, 'is it because of him ?' glancing towards what I later learned was the office misery guts.

You need to speak to your agency reiterated the boss.

I politely got up from where I was sitting and stood in the corridor as I did not want to be witness to this.

I never did find out what that was about.

It was a pleasant enough place to work and I was trained in the role. However, the person who was going to give me further training had a sudden change in personal circumstances and went on indefinite family leave.

So, I was given notice later that morning that my booking had ended. The boss said I should record that I left at mid day by way of apology for the short notice.

No biggie, but my God !

Decide..if it was a once-in-a-lifetime event, where someone was acting very out of character, and apologised etc afterwards, then consider staying. Otherwise, leave.

MintyFreshBreath · 05/03/2022 16:50

I once almost handed my notice in after a month as it was so awful. I carried on for another 5 miserable months and I so wish I’d listened to my gut at the beginning. If you loathe it that much and you trust your judgement then just go.

OP - start looking for other jobs asap.

@DogsAndGin seriously or are you some sort of fantasist?

curlymom · 05/03/2022 17:12

Don’t stay where you aren’t comfortable. Life’s too short and there are plenty jobs around

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 05/03/2022 17:12

This sounds familiar. I left a job recently after 7 weeks. I started looking for a different job after being there 2 weeks and waited it out until I had another to go to. Toxic culture, awful treatment of staff - public humiliation and digging out others was the order of the day. Absolutely vile. Do you work in the IT industry by any chance?!

Sorry - what? I'm obviously being slow - did someone laid hands on you / threw something at you - at work? And this is something at happens regularly at your place of employment? 🌹

I walked out of a job on Day 3 once. Toxic atmosphere, job was not the one I was recruited for etc.

Just picked up my handbag and walked out mid-morning, I just leave the whole incident off my CV.

Was a very weird experience. Had never done it before, and never since. So glad I didn't waste my time. They folded during Covid - but to be honest, I am surpised it took that long!
