I recently found out a distant relative (who is now dead) got married when she was just 18 and her DH was also 18. This was a very long time ago and I know times were different but when I look at my DS who is 17 and although he’s a lovely lad the idea of him getting married next year seems beyond ridiculous. So I wondered does anyone know anyone who got married at a very young age (18/19/20) recently as in since 2010. How did it work out? Did they stay together? How did they manage finances ect?

People I knew at university got married at 21 and 22 in 1997, straight after university. Still together now.

A girl I went to school with got married at 16 (Scotland) I think her husband was 20 at the time. Seems crazy nowadays.

My cousins son got married at 21 they are now 30 odd they seem happy enough.

hiredandsqueak · 02/03/2022 17:26

I got married at 19 separated at 49. My eldest is marrying this year aged 35 which seems much more sensible to me although he and his partner have lived together a good while anyway.

Moaningturtle · 02/03/2022 17:28

I married at 19 in 2000, split the same year. What was I thinking?

reluctantbrit · 02/03/2022 17:29

Two of my nieces, one 19, the other one was a bit older but they were together since end of secondary school.

Both are divorced now, fairly soonish after the wedding (1 year/18 months). Both say they were too young and discovered too late that they wanted differnt things from their lives.

It can work but both partners need to be quite grown up about it.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 02/03/2022 17:30

Don’t really know anyone who got married very young, most people I know got married for the first time in their thirties.

firstimemamma · 02/03/2022 17:31

The youngest I know is SIL at 23. She's very happy, 4 years in so far. 3 children.

horseymum · 02/03/2022 17:31

Married at 21, still happy 23 years later. Christians if that's relevant. Not sure how managing finance is any different due to age, we've always had joint finances. This was was discussed before marrying. Maybe easier when you've not lived on your own for years beforehand.

DD born when I was 19, engaged at 21 and married at 24. 4 years married this year and 9 years together. I love him more and more.

ShowOfHands · 02/03/2022 17:31

DH and I got together at 17 and have been happily together for 23yrs.

I know now doing the job I do and understanding brain development that marrying under 25 is a curious thing because you are still adolescent in many ways that matter. It probably does put some pressure on the marriage because of the changes which will necessarily occur before actual maturation. But it can work. It did for us.

callmebymyname1 · 02/03/2022 17:32

My aunt and uncle married at 18 and we’re happily married until she died in 2018 aged 80.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 02/03/2022 17:32

Meant to add, we have a joint account and consider all money as ‘our’ money. I earn slightly more.

JimLaheysWhiskeyBottle · 02/03/2022 17:32

A bit outside of your timeframe but I got married at 19 in 2003 and my husband was 20. Still together now, but we’ve had and having some very difficult times.

thepeopleversuswork · 02/03/2022 17:34

Youngest in my peer group was 23. Needless to say they have divorced.

TBH I would be appalled if my DD planned to marry below the age of 30. It’s too young. You don’t know yourself enough, let alone them.

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 02/03/2022 17:34

We got married at 21, straight out of Uni, 24 years ago. Still very happily. Dc1 is now engaged at 24 and I can’t help thinking they’re a bit young which makes me quite the hypocrite!

SoberSerena · 02/03/2022 17:34

A school friend got married immediately after finishing a levels which was in 2002. They did stay together a few years and had dcs, but are now divorced.

She was very religious, so I think that was part of the reason for getting married so young.

onlychildhamster · 02/03/2022 17:36

Married at 22 in 2015. Still together obviously. And we are celebrating our wedding next month lol. After 7 years of marriage lol. In my home country, we register the marriage legally, buy the apartment and then do the big wedding (which is often expensive due to cultural requirements to cater a 7 course meal for lots of relatives and colleagues and business associates) with whatever is left after buying a house/repairs/furniture etc. I have done the same but as I bought in London, it took me several years to save a deposit. We bought in 2019 and planned the wedding in 2020; unfortunately was delayed due to covid travel restrictions for 2 years. Now we can have the wedding; but toasts and live music and mingling between tables are still banned in my home country; cap of 20 for tea ceremony as well. Oh well, at least we are allowed to celebrate. I always planned for only 50 people (mostly relatives) so in a way, covid is good as a small wedding doesn't look as weird as it usually does in 'normal times'

onlychildhamster · 02/03/2022 17:37

We are very happy together X

miltonj · 02/03/2022 17:37

Yes, a few couples, but all Christian were that's often the norm.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 02/03/2022 17:39

@Worriedmama32

Me and DH got married at 21 and will have been together 12 years this summer (3 DCs). We got plenty of comments about being too young but we are still very happy together
Similar boat! Married at 20, 10 years ago. 3 kids, dual-career couple. Life’s not always easy but I’m grateful we’re getting through it together!
lizziesiddal79 · 02/03/2022 17:42

My cousin got married at 16 in early 2000s. He was 19. Lasted 11 years. Divorced now.

DeadButDelicious · 02/03/2022 17:43

I met my now husband in 2004, when he was 19 and I was 22, we got married in 2006 when he was 21 and I was 24, we will have been married for 16 years in November, 18 over all. He is the love of my life. Even if he is a grumpy old so and so. Smile

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 02/03/2022 17:43

I married at 22, many thought too young...especially MIL DH was 26. 2 kids later and celebrating our 11th Anniversary this year. Much closer with MIL now too

Chely · 02/03/2022 17:43

We got engaged when we were 18 & 20 (I'm older), had a child the following year and bought a house. Eventually got married after a 4.5 year engagement, had a lot more kids and still together.
