DH wants to build a bunker/shelter in the basement

I wish I was kidding!

DH has decided it would be sensible to create a bunker/fall out shelter in the basement in case of nuclear war/war. I feel like he’s gone mad!

The last apartment building I lived in that had a basement bunker didn't have anything fancy as it double as storage basement for all the apartments, but my storage area had a sink so water supply. I had a brief moment of wondering when I moved in, of how I could sell access to the water to the other residents.

The one I stayed in was under a school so it was quite big (it was a confusing maze to get to the loo at night!) that’s probably why it had extra stuff compared to private ones. It had triple decker bunk beds which I remember being quite impressed by!

Triple decker bunkbed are impressive (loved the old night trains I used to go on to Lapland, that had triple decker bunks)

Why do / did the Swiss have a requirement for nuclear bunkers? I thought they always (mostly?) remained neutral in wartime.

I guess because they are a small country in the middle of Europe surrounded by other countries which might get nuked.

I’d definitely have my bunker shoes off and fill it with fake plants from ikea. You’d want it homely. And get a tv with and inbuilt DVD player and stock up on dvds for free from Facebook. Assuming during a war the internet might be patchy so Netflix not an option for entertaining dc.
It’s strange to think other countries insist on bomb shelters locally. I’ve had a look an my nearest is a 40minute drive away and I live in quite a large town. Scary that there is no provision here any more, the last war wasn’t really that long ago - still in living memory for some. It’s like they presumed it would just never happen again. How short sighted

How long would he plan staying down there, assuming it's massive enough to do the job? A few years ago we visited a defunct Titan missile in Arizona and were told that they would have stayed about 100 feet underground for a month then someone would get the job of going up to see what was left. I sat at the console with the guide and we went through the check sequence for launching, we both then had to turn our key and it was scary even though logically I knew it was decommissioned!
