DH wants to build a bunker/shelter in the basement

I wish I was kidding!

DH has decided it would be sensible to create a bunker/fall out shelter in the basement in case of nuclear war/war. I feel like he’s gone mad!

argh! I well remember a discussion

Susu49 · 28/02/2022 23:32

Would a cellar be enough to protect you from the radiation?

I was born post Cold War but I don't think there's anything any of us could realistically do to protect ourselves is there?

If your DH needs to do something to feel safe or assert some control over this nightmare which threatens us then, unless it's going to bankrupt you, let him go for it.

You never know, it might just save your lives.

ThymePoultice · 28/02/2022 23:32

@TheMarmaladeYears

I'm an old gimmer who went through the whole 'Protect and Still Get Vaporised' shiz back in the late 70s/early 80s. Even then we knew this was utter nonsense so far as protection from nuclear war was concerned. There was also a particularly chilling TV series called 'Threads" where, amongst other scenarios, the council's emergency planning team took to a nuclear bunker under the Town Hall. You might care to point out to your DH that the upper floors of this building fell down after the bomb dropped and all the staff in this bunker died a lingering and very unpleasant death trapped underneath the remains of the Town Hall with nobody above it in any position to rescue them. So basement bunkers may offer protection from some sorts of warfare but are by no means any great help in a nuclear strike.
This subject is making us all so cheerful! Grin

I’ve just been laughing at the incredibly specific advice in that protect and survive public information film that “if you live in flats of five storeys or more, the top two floors aren’t suitable as fall out rooms”. What on Earth?

VelvetChairGirl · 28/02/2022 23:34

@OneTC

Once worked on someone's house that had a fully equipped nuclear bunker, rad suits, Geiger counters, a year's supply of food and water, it was pretty impressive

If I had loads of money and didn't live in a flat I would probably have one. If you don't survive the nuclear holocaust you're not gonna get to rip around the desert in turbo charged cars scrapping over petrol, and isn't that what we've all been waiting for? 🤔

it wasnt nukes that caused mad max it was a war in the middle east leading to limited fuel supplies and the destruction civilization as everyone decided it was every man for himself, crime spiraled the police couldnt cope and people fled the cities to the bush to try and avoid each other as they killed each other over fuel and food.
extractorfactor · 28/02/2022 23:34

Oh ffs whales not wales. Obviously Wales can't be a fish -well nor can whales for that matter!

LondonQueen · 28/02/2022 23:35

The emergency alert feature has been in the works for some time. Me and my colleagues all got a test alert last November which freaked us all out. It's only ramped up coverage as people are paranoid about nuclear weapons now.

saleorbouy · 28/02/2022 23:36

Unless you have the ability to isolate, ve self sufficient with rations for a number of months and have a clean, scrubbed air supply until the radioactivity reduces then it pretty pointless.

Wasn't there a mushroom cloud in the history/story section of beyond thunderdome?

So now we are all experts on viruses, mutations, immunity, different types of vaccines we are going to now learn about types of effective bomb shelters, rations required etc & radiation effectiveness
Isn't life fun & so educational.
If life over the past years hasn't taught us one thing it should have -live for today & hope for the best

Akire · 28/02/2022 23:47

That video was cheery Grin I’ve heard references to washing in sand but thought some joke but had box sand for doing the dishes? The mind boggles, do Waitrose sell sand?

DixonD · 28/02/2022 23:48
It was the official advice in the 80s!

And someone send me this today: looks like the government uploaded this over the weekend. Could be a coincidence. Or could be in case of nuclear attack…

www.gov.uk/alerts
No, I’ve known about that coming in for a while.

Other countries do the same thing.

mumwon · 28/02/2022 23:53

(starts re reading Nevil Shute "On the Beach""

(this is the new version & in several parts but its a really good film)
BlueSummerBaby · 28/02/2022 23:56

Where's he going to keep the warehouse worth of food water etc you'll need until it's safe to set foot outside in goodness knows how many years after the radiation has died down? How will he connect this bunker to the sewers? Or is he planning for you all to stand in your own excrement until you die of cholera or sepsis from infected feet or something else equally as nasty? How will you stay in a bunker without daylight and fresh air without killing each other or dying of suffocation? He hasn't really thought this through has he

BlueSummerBaby · 01/03/2022 00:03

Go Google Only Fools And Horses: The Russians Are Coming and have a laugh together instead of stressing

I will go by the original film thank you.
JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 01/03/2022 00:22

Buy him a copy of Nevil Shute's On the Beach, it might be old but it is a fantastic novel about the aftermath of nuclear war.

Maybe take him on a trip to the secret nuclear bunker too, so he can see what he needs to create.

OneTC · 01/03/2022 00:26

I will go by the original film thank you

The original film is part of a trilogy in which nuclear war happens

Also the best ripping about in supercharged vehicles happened in 2, which is post apocalyptic

CharSiu · 01/03/2022 00:30

I watched threads as a teenager in the 1980’s it is possibly available on YouTube. At that point I decided I wouldn’t want to be one of the people left struggling by on a devastated planet.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/03/2022 00:32

should have been at school in the 60's - sitting underneath your desk was supposed to be adequate shelter from nuclear attack,

impossible · 01/03/2022 00:50

He had better get himself a gun too so he can fight off the desperate hoards who will want shelter.

Canyouhearmehello · 01/03/2022 01:10

Is that you Judy?Reminds me of Richard Madeley when he had a survival cupboard under the stairs because he thought the world would end the year of the millennium.

HelpfulAlex · 01/03/2022 01:11

This thread has made me wonder and after some googling, the US Government updated this page three days ago… 🥺

@AngelinaFibres

Once you have all done a poop In the emergency portable potty where does he think it will go ?
Composting toilet... Earth closet as opposed to water closet
