Face Masks

AIBU to think nearly everyone has stopped wearing them?

At the weekend we visited a local tourist attráction, went swimming, went to the pub, went for a meal out, and went shopping. During this I saw no more than a handful of people wearing a mask?

@WutheringBites

This thread is the most depressing read. Public health messaging has completely failed in England; the mask isn’t to protect you, it’s to reduce the viral shedding and protect those around you. Covid hasn’t taken a fucking holiday: and by not wearing masks we put *other* people at risk. The only exception in providing protection to the individual wearing the mask is the ffp2/3 masks which if they have a decent seal to the face are 95-99% effective. Honestly, I’ve no clue how we’ve all become so uncaring of the people around us. (& yes, I’m a dr and yes, I have a masters in public health)
Hear hear. The lack of understanding on this thread about what masks of various types do and don't do, and why they are worn in clinical settings, is so frustrating.
Wizzbangfizz · 01/03/2022 21:59

No idea why people are arguing about masks being such a good idea when wales and Scotland kept them and their figures were no better than ours

MrsDThomas · 01/03/2022 22:02

If i were to visit England i wouldn’t wear it but i dont visit

In wales you have to wear it for Tesco, but you can party away in Wetherspoons.

No fucking clue what the difference is.

Baublebonkers · 01/03/2022 22:21

I don’t wear it anymore but it doesn’t bother me if others do, indoors or out.

Hairbrush123 · 01/03/2022 22:24

Give it time, the other 0.99% will stop wearing theirs too…

happychops · 01/03/2022 22:30

Surely it’s a personal choice? Those who choose not to wear them shouldn’t be judgemental of those that do and vice versa. We really need to start being kind to each other and get on with our lives, with or without masks.

WutheringBites · 01/03/2022 22:38

Ah. “Personal choice” doesn’t exist in a pandemic. It’s what we do as a community that matters.

That’s why it’s so bloody annoying to see right wing politicians spout nonsense about individual risk. They’ve completely failed to grasp that individuals can’t risk assess because it’s the population level that matters.

The fact that we’ve seen one of the highest rates of deaths should indicate exactly what they consider to be the risk they are prepared to take with our population.
732 dead last week. At the point they ask everyone to protect each other. Mind blowing.

Exactly WutheringBites !
happychops · 01/03/2022 22:51

I’m with you @ WutheringBites. My post was really to say that now the government has removed any legal obligation (wiped their hands of any responsibility) to wear a mask, those that choose to do so, should be able to without judgement.

WutheringBites · 01/03/2022 23:13

It’s hard to know wtaf we are all meant to do, @happychops isn’t it? I’m so fed up of covid and frankly horrified by long covid, I’m just gobsmacked that our gov has washed their hands of everything. I’d like people to just wear a mask, to keep me safe and I’ll wear one too to look after them. That’d be grand.

Tigger1895 · 01/03/2022 23:18

@DontBuyANewMumCashmere

Loads of fuckers wearing them in my town. Grin I'm done with it all tbh but I do wear them when I feel under social pressure to wear them! Blush

Today will be the first pick up where we've been told we don't have to wear masks so I'll be interested to see who still wears them. (We stay outside and socially distance so I can't feel too embarrassed about not wearing them in this case.)

Why do you socially distance? I thought you were finished with the shit.
keffie12 · 01/03/2022 23:23

It seems to depend what shop your in where we are. I am still wearing mine and will continue too. The pandemic hasn't gone away

Still wearing mine..

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2022 06:35

I thought it would have dwindled more by now but still quite a few where I am

So rude and insensitive! Has it occurred to you that people wearing them are either clinically vulnerable or concerned to protect others who are clinically vulnerable. My husband is very unwell so I'm keen to keep him free from chest infections. Fortunately we're in N.Ireland where most still wear them.
TellMeMoreHellebore · 02/03/2022 07:37

Not many bothering here at all!

Was out shopping etc yesterday and was not seeing more than the odd elderly person with one. Ditched mine as soon as they were not required

sanityisamyth · 02/03/2022 07:47

We didn't have to wear them in Scouts on Monday 👏👏👏

withernseawoes · 02/03/2022 08:06

@Bootikin

In London about 80% of people are still wearing them indoors / on transport, thank god.
You must be in a very different bit of London to me. I live in/frequent the deprived bits (as opposed to the trendy bits) of the East. Mask wearing wasn't great here even when it was a legal requirement and, now it isn't, I hardly see anyone in them. Apart from, as I mentioned above, all the 'hoodie' gang members, plus any criminals who feature in Ring doorbell/CCTV videos posted on Nextdoor who are up to no good. Masks are incredibly handy for criminals who want to evade the automatic facial recognition CCTV that was set up round here a few years ago.
Juno22 · 02/03/2022 08:13

Withernseawoes I agree with you. Definitely not 80% where I live in London. I'd say less than 20% anywhere I've been in london in the last couple of weeks.

SartresSoul · 02/03/2022 08:14

It’s mostly just old people wearing them where I live and I understand why they do, my Gran still won’t leave the house and hasn’t for two years now which I find so sad.

So basically, this Covid thing has ruined her life!
EmmaStone · 02/03/2022 08:59

10-20% I'd say. Last week I visited a tourist attraction, 4 different cities and a shopping centre, and there was consistently not much in the way of mask wearing (including on public transport). I now have Covid... (thankfully so far just like a cold, I've been able to work etc).

luckylavender · 02/03/2022 09:10

I was in London at the weekend and saw some. But I caught Covid (first time) and feel dreadful, like I've been run over by a truck. Nothing like a mild cold. Triple jabbed. This ain't over, be careful. And stop mocking people wearing masks. Mind your own business.

MarvellousMonsters · 02/03/2022 10:04
@MarvellousMonsters because they are in a sterile medical setting - I doubt they are all wearing them in Asda.
I work in outpatients, not a sterile environment. We all still wear masks.

Do you all think it's coincidence the infection rates are rising again??

GettingStuffed · 02/03/2022 10:05

People around here still seem to be wearing them
