It was on channel 4 news that Putin has ordered his nuclear deterrent on high alert. But tomorrow there's supposed to be peace talks. What the hell is up with the man. I must admit to feeling even more worried now.

I think so much is distorted. It’s really hard to know exactly what’s going on. A friend at my park place sent me this. It’s a direct translation of Putin’s address to the people of Russia today. It was quite an eye opener. Haven’t seen this anywhere else

mommydragonn · 27/02/2022 22:01

The only hope is someone close takes Putin out... but it seems the mad man remains in a bubble with a select few and if anything happens to him, his bubble or entourage gets wiped out... so who close to him will try anything 🤷🏽‍♀️

dementedma · 27/02/2022 22:04

It's willy waving fury that Ukraine are resisting and the rest of the World are standing together in condemnation. Even the Russian people are turning against him. Nobody wants to be nuked and nobody is going to allow him to do it. It really isnt just a big red button he can press when he wants.

Rollonspring1111 · 27/02/2022 22:04

@Nubbled

He may be suffering from dementia and not care
That's an insult to anyone suffering from dementia. People with dementia still care. They are still the same loving people they always were. Stop attacking people with dementia. They are human just like anyone else.
battenburgHatday · 27/02/2022 22:14

I worry he would use a small nuclear device in Ukraine just to see what he can get away with and assert himself as someone who carries through with their threats

Yes, exactly this. What might happen after, who knows.
Cyw2018 · 27/02/2022 22:20

I think he just wants to secure his name in history like Lenin or Stalin... Putingrad!!!... And will go to any lengths to achieve it, this makes him absolutely terrifying. I hope he gets assassinated before he causes too much death and destruction.

As well as all the body bags the Ukraine are sending back to Russia, tomorrow should see Russian people very poor financially. Putins advance is not going well, hes angry at the rest of the world's support to Ukraine, the world doesn't like Russia..and hrs not happy about it.
Hopefully his military leaders ignore his orders

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 27/02/2022 22:28

Not a comment on the general thread, but I've seen in the last hour or so that this report actually seems to not be true.

There is some doubt, but the source is apparently credible, so who knows. We might find out more tomorrow.

Herewearestar · 27/02/2022 22:28

@Cyw2018

Yes let’s get a quip about a degenerative condition amidst the carnage. Hmm

WeAreTheHeroes · 27/02/2022 22:29

@Fireants

Back in the 1980s, pre Chenoble, and it all got hairy, there were US missiles in space to intercept nuclear bombs headed our way. I bet there is defensive weaponry now that we can’t imagine. The world will be ok.
You do know the so-called Star Wars program was completely made up? This came out years ago.

The sacking of the Chief of Staff is made up too.

Sacking tweet here.

SuperSocks · 27/02/2022 22:32

Do you think when Putin was a little boy he ever had nightmares about bad guys, and had to be cuddled back to sleep by his mum? Do you think his daughters ever did and he comforted them? Ironic huh!

WildRosie · 27/02/2022 22:35

Comrad Vlad wants Putin in his place. I shall see myself out forthwith. Goodnight all.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 27/02/2022 22:37

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

Along with a number of informed comments querying it. That's no reflection on the characteristic and acknowledged integrity of the source.
CovidCorvid · 27/02/2022 22:41

If he has sacked his chief of staff hopefully it was because the chief told him he was nuts. And hopefully others tell him the same and maybe even refuse to carry out orders.

ClaudineClare · 27/02/2022 22:46

@Liamgallaghersparka

There isn't going to be a nuclear war ffs, the amount of scaremongering threads I've read on this is beyond ridiculous. On BBC news it reports that Putin has put nuclear weapons on special alert but the announcement doesn't mean Russia is going to use them. He has done it in protest at the West voicing opinion against him. Hes trying to be a big man. If he were even to try, he knows that NATO also has enough weapons to destroy Russia if they were even used. People are right to be concerned but most of these threads are pure hysteria. A new post partum mum was on here the other night absolutely beside herself, ( most likely after reading the threads on here) seeking some kind of reassurance and one of the answers was more or less saying if they dropped a nuclear bomb she and her kids wouldn't know anything about it anyway. I mean, what the fuck?? I suggest you get your news from reliable sources who know what they're talking about, don't rely on the newspapers or Twitter, they're full of sensationalist shit. And think yourself lucky that we still have the luxury to go about our daily lives, unlike those poor sods in Ukraine who are being bombed to shit out of their homes.
This, a million times this.

Am so happy some people on here are laughing and saying there won’t be a nuclear war. And that this is all scaremongering. The guy is a lunatic. How do people on mumsnet know it’s all going to be ok. Confused

Chailatteplease · 27/02/2022 23:02

Have you heard any of his speeches?
The one 2 days ago, tell me he is not um barmy[/quote]
Yeah I’ve heard them. He doesn’t seem mentally challenged at all, just devoid of conscience.

How do you know you won't be run over by a bus tomorrow? You don't, I don't, nobody on MN knows either. But on balance of probability you will be just fine.

Same with this impending nuclear apocalypse. It is still extremely unlikely to happen, just a little less extremely unlikely to happen than it was this time last week. But on balance of probability we will be just fine.

www.nytimes.com/2022/02/24/world/europe/putin-ukraine-speech.html

I find this part terrifying, Putin doesn't seem like the sort of man, that makes idle threats

"No matter who tries tostand inour way orall themore so create threats forour country andour people, they must know that Russia will respond immediately, andtheconsequences will be such asyou have never seen inyour entire history. No matter how theevents unfold, we are ready. All thenecessary decisions inthis regard have been taken. Ihope that mywords will be heard."

SoItWas · 27/02/2022 23:13

Repost, I have no idea what happened there Confused (hopefully it doesn't happen again)

"I would now like to say something very important for those who may be tempted to interfere in these developments from the outside. No matter who tries to stand in our way or all the more so create threats for our country and our people, they must know that Russia will respond immediately, and the consequences will be such as you have never seen in your entire history."
