Where would you flee to if war came to us ?

Sorry really not wanting to sound alarmist. But just pondering on the thought of which country we could seek refuge in, should the worst happen?

Our European neighbours would be out, as they'll have their own issues.

So where could we go ? Interesting to think about with all that's going on and how the general public view refugees...

if there is to be nuclear attack somewhere, away from the way the wind had blown it.

SmellyOldOwls · 26/02/2022 22:25

@LauriePartridge4Eva

I won't flee. I will stay and fight. I lived through the Troubles and I'm not about to run away now. I've already decided I am staying, no matter what happens in the future.
Same. NI was a country at war when I was a child, I remember sitting in my grandmothers house when a bomb went off about 1/4 mile away. I'm going nowhere.
PrinceParry · 26/02/2022 22:26

I'm an Irish citizen by default of having Irish parents. My dc are too, technically. I'd work out how to manifest being allowed to enter Ireland with zero evidence that any of this was the case (We don't have Irish passports) and meanwhile plan my goodbyes to dh, who wouldn't have a chance in hell of getting into another country!

bigyellowTpot · 26/02/2022 22:26

wow I'm amazed on this thread how many people have dual nationality atleast you'll all be able to go elsewhere and be safe if it ever came to it. but honestly I think all will be fine In this country, we'll just be seriously hit in the pocket with the higher bills etc. xx

radiocity · 26/02/2022 22:27

Australia. Dual nationality.

Siepie · 26/02/2022 22:27

If it got to the stage where people needed to flee the UK, I don’t think there’d be many places left to flee to. US, Canada and most of Europe are in NATO too.

Oimyerda · 26/02/2022 22:28

Apparently Northern Ireland is part of Britain. You had a civil war in your country for decades and you did nothing and went nowhere. Why would you suddenly go somewhere now?

AffIt · 26/02/2022 22:29

@GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut

I'm in North Cornwall. I was idly musing this morning that it's a good place to be.

Then I remembered that Devonport at Plymouth is the largest naval base in Western Europe, and also the only place for the Royal navy to refuel and repair nuclear subs.

On the plus side, if the shit hits the fan, I probably won't have much time to worry about it...

Yeah, I live about 25 miles away from Faslane, so if the worst comes to the worst, I won't know anything about it.
worriedmum2022 · 26/02/2022 22:29

My friend has a cellar, she lives in a really old house and she was saying she might put some beds down there and plug in heaters

Newbabynewhouse · 26/02/2022 22:30

New zealand... if theyd let us in.. we have family there..cant imagine they'd get into much trouble over there...

needanewplannow · 26/02/2022 22:31

@Swear

Well we don't have the right to go anywhere. Because of Brexit.
Yes, this. Fucking stupid idea, it was.

Who throws away the right to live and work in an entire continent? For what? FFS.

SmellyOldOwls · 26/02/2022 22:32

@WaterBottle123

We've haven't been invaded since 1066. We are lucky as fuck to live on a rich island.
Yes, with a world class Air Force and surrounded by submarines carrying nukes.
1Dandelion1 · 26/02/2022 22:32

@wheretogoif I don't think there would be anywhere to go, I'd probably go to my parents as i live in a city and they live in the suburbs.

I'd recommend reading/listening to One Second After by William R. Forstchen and the second book, its a very likely scenario of how US and Europe could be hurt at the same time.

needanewplannow · 26/02/2022 22:33

I'm not sure. Ireland I suppose as I do have some connections there. Rural parts of Scotland?

ladygindiva · 26/02/2022 22:33

Canada. I have cousins there. I'd go for a long holiday and then stay illegally.

Rainallnight · 26/02/2022 22:33

Ireland, where I am from.

Hesma · 26/02/2022 22:34

I’d go home to my family in Ireland

extractorfactor · 26/02/2022 22:34

Nah, I'm too lazy. I mean right now I need a pee, but can't be arsed to move off the sofa, I definitely can't be arsed to upsticks. I mean we're all mortal so at some stage the grim reaper is gonna come calling, but until that time I'll just keep plodding on wasting my life on MNGrin

Creameggs223 · 26/02/2022 22:35

@umberellaonesie

Realistically no where because if the removal of visas for Ukrainians to come to the UK this week is anything to go by. No where would have us.
No they haven't! Some Russian visas from the basketball team travelling to Manchester I think we're removed but that's all.
Blinkingbatshit · 26/02/2022 22:36

DH was born in one southern African country, raised in another and has definite citizenship rights in a final one. I’ve always laughed and said how we’d never need to fall back on his history (none of the counties involved are what I would consider safe or stable) BUT last night we chatted with the kids about what or which might be the best option if needed….. Always thought we were safe on our island, though the Brexit issue made me realise we may need an escape route….I just didn’t anticipate this…☹️

SecretKeeper1 · 26/02/2022 22:36

My cellar. Or, there’s a disused rail tunnel nearby, but I bet half the village would be down there.

Chuckling at those who reckon they’ll easily get a visa and flight to Aus/NZ with a moments notice. Not gonna happen.

We are an island with excellent sea and air defence systems. We can identify and shoot down or torpedo approaching enemies quickly and accurately. If they really want to get us it’ll be a nuclear attack, a few long range missiles ought to do it. Or, at best, cyber warfare, which will ultimately cause a huge amount of civil unrest.

Happy Saturday night everyone!!

Greebosmum · 26/02/2022 22:37

Would you really go? Would you not fight? Realistically there is nowhere to go and I have worked hard for what I've got. I will be holed up with my Molotov cocktails. They will have to shoot me. I am also an extremely grumpy old woman, so they may regret starting on me the mood I'm in at the moment.

Onionpatch · 26/02/2022 22:37

@waterproofed

Worry not, OP.

In the current crisis, we have all the Russian money invested right here on the ground in real estate, fine art, and countless other things. They are hardly going to bomb their own assets.

I'd had been wondering if the fact most of London seemed to be a savings account for Russia would have an impact too.
Creameggs223 · 26/02/2022 22:37

I ain't got a passport so I'd be hiding under me stairs or travel to the countryside somewhere an Hope for the best.

EmmaH2022 · 26/02/2022 22:38

I could maybe be allowed in to mum's country of origin

But in the end, I would have to stay and fight, I couldn't not. They kill me, that might be a good outcome if they're going to take my country. I would go down with a lot of swear words. This is my land. I can't run away.
