Sorry really not wanting to sound alarmist. But just pondering on the thought of which country we could seek refuge in, should the worst happen?

Our European neighbours would be out, as they'll have their own issues.

So where could we go ? Interesting to think about with all that's going on and how the general public view refugees...

Bangladesh as that’s where my DC’s father is working. Obviously not long term. I’d send them and stay if I couldn’t take my dog. Sincerely hope it never comes to it. I could leave Surrey and go to Wales where I have family. Like people did in Ww2, God I’d hoped this kind of thought was for the history lessons only

quiteathome · 26/02/2022 21:26

If it got that far I don't think there would be anywhere that would let people in.

So stay put and hope for the best

forlornlorna · 26/02/2022 21:27

I have a life limiting illness. I'd be happy to go out and fight as best I could. Suicide mission. I'd go out like a boss!

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/02/2022 21:27

Australia to family we have not seen for a while.

twilightermummy · 26/02/2022 21:27

**Moonmelodies

I'd stay put. Maybe Putin could fix the NHS and make the trains run on time.**

I half agree with this tbf.

Unless China teams up with Russia, I’m not too concerned at the prospect. Putin is a very lonely man right now. The news have reported that Russian soldiers are asking Ukrainians for food and aren’t entirely sure as to why they’re invading at all.

Their gains have been slower than expected with Ukrainians’ resistance. I mostly fear his state of mind and his threats of nuclear weapons. He’s completely losing it. Tbh, it’s been such a weird few years since Brexit that I’m beginning to lose it too. If you can’t beat them, join them.

BunsyGirl · 26/02/2022 21:28

Canada, Australia or NZ would be my countries of choice because as an English lawyer it is relatively easy for me to re-qualify in those jurisdictions.

LightfoldEngines · 26/02/2022 21:29

Dunno. Eldest DDs have Italian passports (they’re teens) so could easily flee with their Dad, but me and youngest would be stuck here.

As has been said, it’s the wealthy in general that are able to flee before any sanctions etc come down, and I sure as shit am not wealthy, so it wouldn’t matter anyway.

I think that is the reality.

How do you look yourself in the mirror each morning, with all of that self-hatred?

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 26/02/2022 21:30

We don't have passports and neither Dp or I drive!
So we will be staying put and hoping for the best.

Mochudubh · 26/02/2022 21:31

@flapjackfairy

I have a mental image of us all rushing to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland and Scotland sinking a bit more into the sea and the UK jutting up several inches on the South coast of England as a result !
Scotland is actually still rising due to the relief from the weight of glaciers after the end of the last ice age. I'm not sure how many people would have to be here to make it sink again!

Seriously though, why are people thinking Scotland would-be safer? Faslane would definitely be a target, probably Aberdeen and Rosyth and maybe even Sullom Voe too. Unless you plan on moving to Rockall, which would get crowded pretty quickly, we're all fucked.

LowlandLucky · 26/02/2022 21:32

I will be going as far as my kitchen to make a cuppa, then out to the shed but i can't tell you what i would use all the all the empty bottles and rags for or i will be banned by mumsnet.

Athenajm80 · 26/02/2022 21:33

@Whydoesthecatalwaysdothat

I've been thinking this. What a horrible thought though.

I feel so sorry for all the people who are leaving their homes. My biggest worry would be the pets.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but Poland have set up places for Ukrainian pets to get the necessary vaccinations for their owners to be able to take them into Poland. Apparently Poland didn't help refugees from Syria and got slated by some for it, but the fact they're doing this and getting rid of all visa requirements for Ukrainian people makes me love the country even more
CaMePlaitPas · 26/02/2022 21:33

We have family (and passports) for a North African country which is stable and economically 'sound'. I would prefer to stay in Europe (we have 3 European passports each) but I think if war was to ever come to Europe getting out and using our non EU passport would be a good choice.

tapdancingmum · 26/02/2022 21:35

I would stay here as nowhere else to go. My only consolation is I live down the road from Air Command which may get taken out and if its nuclear I won't know anything about it. My DD did ask if we would send her away as a refugee to a remote part of the country but as she's 20 I said it was highly unlikely.

We do have a couple of shotguns upstairs so they would come out and be put by the front door!

SlashBeef · 26/02/2022 21:35

Eh?
Benjispruce5 · 26/02/2022 21:36

Ireland. Dual nationality. Also have family in Australia.

LifesABotch · 26/02/2022 21:36

@illyawasthebest

If it gets to that stage, I 100% want to be dead.
Yep! Sad
misscockerspaniel · 26/02/2022 21:37

After reading last night about a family fleeing Ukraine in their car, leaving behind their pets, I was thinking about them and wondering what I would pack in a hurry. They are hoping to get to the safety of the Island I live on. And I am thinking that in the Op's scenario I would want to get off the Island to the UK (along with thousands of others). And you lot are thinking about fleeing the UK!

veevee04 · 26/02/2022 21:37

No where , have family in Singapore and Australia but I'm guessing there would be war round there with China.

2022ben · 26/02/2022 21:38

US or India. Big countries you can lose yourself in, English speaking, and they both have nuclear weapons so possibly a deterrent. I could possibly obtain a professional visa in either (was actually looking into it as a career move before Covid).

If there’s a nuke strike on London, I have already told DH we’re getting drunk on champagne (the kids too), and then going into the Thames with stones in our pockets.

ThatsNotMyGolem · 26/02/2022 21:38

Israel.

Flowersandhearts · 26/02/2022 21:39

Surely if we go to war, it will be Nuclear war and by the time we know it's going to happen we won't be able to escape? Also everyone in the world would be doomed anyway in that situation.

How the general public view refugees???? Hmm

How is that exactly?

Hopefully anyone who views them badly now realises how it could happen to them...

FrothyB · 26/02/2022 21:40

What a stupid fucking comment. "Like we deserve". Why do we all "deserve" to drown in the med? Because a loud minority of the country isn't too keen on people who are largely economic migrants coming to Europe via illegal means?

By your logic of the views of a few determining the fate of everyone, then all Syrians and Afghans should die because a % of them are Jihadists? Or do people only deserve safety if they've voted the "correct" way at every election and have #FBPE in their twitter usernames? You think the folks of Algeria/Tunisia/Egypt would open their arms, or would a decent chunk of their society complain about the thousands and thousands of "Christians" decending apon them who don't follow their values or way of life?

As for us. Living under Russian occupation wouldn't be worse than dying, for us anyway, so if it looked like we were going to lose, just wait it out untill the changeover of power and carry on under the new system.
