Maybe we should have a tips and tricks thread?

We're with bulb. Rural property 2 up
2 down with original single glazed windows but it's grade 1 listed so we're screwed there barely have the heating on as it is. We set the thermostat to 17 if the heating is on. We don't have it on over night and it's usually around 13 degrees in the morning when we get up. We have a multi fuel stove that heats water as well as being a fire, so we use that in the morning when we get up, bank it over night so it's warm (ish) when we get up and then stoke it up for the day. We have pans that can cook on top of it because we had no power for well over 10 days after storm Arwen so now I'm practicing my techniques

Electricity unit rates from 20.131to 28.020p
Electricity day charge from 24.373p to 42.242p

Gas 4.043p to 7.343p
Standing charge 26.112p to 27.219p

Direct debit has gone from £90 to £201.67

I’m with bulb

Received this yesterday

Odd that different rates to yours

From 1 April, our prices will be increasing
We're increasing our electricity day unit rate from 23.965p to 33.100p per kWh and our night unit rate from 14.330p to 19.793p per kWh. Our electricity standing charge is increasing from 24.113p to 41.749p per day.

We're increasing our gas unit rate from 4.052p to 7.319p per kWh and standing charge from 26.112p to 27.219p per day.

These prices all include VAT at 5%.

Your payments will increase from 8 April
On 8 April we will increase your monthly payments from £154.43 to £196.64. This is based on our estimate of your energy usage at the new rates, plus an adjustment for any debit or credit in your Bulb account.

thanktor · 26/02/2022 06:17

3 bed turn of the century property
Single and double glazed
Don’t hold back on heating in the slightest
One adult two children

Panicmode1 · 26/02/2022 06:21

We are with Bulb and are heavy users (family of 6). DD is going from £150 a month to £286...standing charges 47p (from 24) and 27p (from 26).

We had a £500 surplus in Nov too 😔.

marqueses · 26/02/2022 06:25

The cap rates depend on where you live unfortunately there's nothing you can do about thta

uptonogoode · 26/02/2022 06:27

Mental isn't it? We can just afford it but we won't be able to go out to the pub any more so the hospitality industry will suffer I think

Lazycatx · 26/02/2022 06:34

3 bed terraced house with 2 adults, I'm with SSE, DD has gone from £104 to £182 Sad

RuralDwelling · 26/02/2022 06:34

We're with Bulb too but only for electric as we have no mains gas (hob is gas on a bottle) and we have oil central heating.

Our direct debit is going up from £95 to £136.

We're in a 2 bed property, just me and DH.

What are your new energy rates?
thanktor · 26/02/2022 06:40

It doesn’t impact me yet but anything more will begin to

I don’t begrudge paying £200 for my heating and electricity. I think many of us have lost sight of what is actually necessary in life. So many don’t begrudge spending many thousands on holidays or many hundreds on new phones etc but warmth? Lighting? Cooking? Not something that want to spend on it seems!

malmi · 26/02/2022 06:47

My tip is to not bother with the monthly "fixed" DD amount, and don't let yourself be used as a bank by "building up credit". Monitor your usage day by day using the smart meter's in home display and request to go to payment on receipt so they only take what you consume each month on your DD.

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 26/02/2022 06:54

I'm on payment by receipt monthly so I can keep an eye and only pay for what we use.

My utility company wanted to put us from £150 a month to £310 Confused

We've bought a one cup kettle and ordered an air fryer so the oven doesn't go on so much as well as cooking with a slow cooker three to four times a week anyway.

Also getting the clothes horse and rotary line out today ready

My standing charge has gone up to 57 p a day from 24p which is shocking so if we can at least save on appliances I'm hopeful we can absorb it.

Rowgtfc72 · 26/02/2022 07:10

My fixed rate ends in 3 weeks and I've been looking around. It's scary. Our direct debit is £68 a month at the minute. No dishwasher, tumble drier and we use very little power during the day. I sort the bills dh pays them and I don't think he's grasped it's going to double. I'm on minimum wage and he's slightly above. We won't be in a heat or eat situation, but I certainly work with people who will be.

uptonogoode · 26/02/2022 09:38

I hope the government step up and help people who have to choose between heating and eating but they won't

BuyDirt · 26/02/2022 09:49

I’ve rounded up,

Electricity unit rate increasing from 21p to 28p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 25p to 48p per day.

Gas unit rate from 4p to 7p per kWh and standing charge from 26p to 27p per day.

We already pay about £250 per month, they’ve said they’ll review our payments in the next 3 months.

Chasingsquirrels · 26/02/2022 09:53

Shell (following demise of Pure Planet): flexible 7 tariff - electricity only.
Unit Tate 29.239p kwh
Standing charge 37.92p day
East Anglia.

What are your new energy rates?
cakeorwine · 26/02/2022 09:54

We've bought a one cup kettle and ordered an air fryer so the oven doesn't go on so much as well as cooking with a slow cooker three to four times a week anyway

It takes about 0.05 KWH to boil 500 ml of water. About 2 - 3 cups.

That's 28p * 0.05 = 1.4p for 2 cups

So if you boil 2 cups at a minimum and don't use half the water, you have wasted 0.7p

Assuming it's just you using the kettle and you boil the kettle 10 times a day but only use half the water you've boiled, that's 7p saved per day

Assuming you can get a cheap one for £35, it will take 500 days to pay itself back. Then you are saving about £2 a month.

Assuming you live by yourself and boil it 10 times a day.

I just try to use as little water in the kettle as I need - I have seen people suggest boiling water and keeping it in a thermos. You are still having to use energy to boil water though.

PukkaP · 26/02/2022 09:54

I'm on Economy 7, and these are my rates fixed until October 2024. I know the advice is not fix, but I don't like the uncertainty

What are your new energy rates?
Roominmyhouse · 26/02/2022 09:58

I’m bulb too.

Electricity unit rate from 21.547p to 29.484p per kWh.
Electricity standing charge from 24.027p to 41.660p per day.
Gas unit rate from 4.052p to 7.319p per kWh Gas standing charge from 26.112p to 27.219p per day.

DD increased from £110 to £163, for a 2 bed end of terrace! Only 2 people but both WFH full time.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/02/2022 10:00

@thanktor Odd that different rates to yours

The energy cap level varies depending on what region you're in. It's possible to be paying a higher rate than an identical house with the same supplier in the next street if you live at the edge of one of the regions (as I do).

pradavilla · 26/02/2022 10:08

Im with outfox the market. Was in a fixed deal that ended in December so currently in the variable now. They've emailed me the attached about what the rates are going up to. Gas nearly double 😮 I'm going from zero standing charge to 77p a day. That's over £23 a month! Even if I don't use anything absolutely shocking!

Currently paying £105 I think and it's going up to £195 from April 😫

What are your new energy rates?
LadyFlumpalot · 26/02/2022 10:10

I'm with Bulb and my bills have gone up from £120 a month (three bedroom fully electric) at the latter end of last year to over £300 a month in January and February and that's before the increase! I had built up £500 worth of credit as well Sad

If one were being cynical, one could almost think they are trying to collect all the credit amounts whilst in administration.

My DD at the moment is £160 a month, they want me to up it to £260 a month now. I genuinely can't afford it. My email from them yesterday said my increase in April will be to £290.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2022 10:12

Fixed for 3l2 years with Scottish Power last month with standing charges 26p for both, electricity at 26.7p/KwH and gas at 6.4p/kWh. Paying £260/ month now.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2022 10:13

2 years...at 312 we would be doing well.

UnCivil · 26/02/2022 10:23

@Chasingsquirrels

Shell (following demise of Pure Planet): flexible 7 tariff - electricity only. Unit Tate 29.239p kwh Standing charge 37.92p day East Anglia.
I was with Pure Planet and moved to Shell also. Elec and gas and also changing to flexible 7 tariff but different electricity prices to you:

“ Your electricity rates will change from 20.316p to 27.627p per kWh and your standing charge per day will change from 23.76p to 44.74p.
Your gas rates will change from 3.987p to 7.282p per kWh and your standing charge per day will change from 26.11p to 27.22p.”

theneverendinglaundry · 26/02/2022 10:29

I got this yesterday from Bulb.

We're increasing our electricity unit rate from 20.860p to 29.239p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 24.007p to 37.918p per day.

We're increasing our gas unit rate from 4.055p to 7.344p per kWh and standing charge from 26.112p to 27.219p per day.

These prices all include VAT at 5%.

On 25 April we will increase your monthly payments from £201.00 to £237.80.

Chasingsquirrels · 26/02/2022 14:45

UnCivil, I understand (from MM) that the price cap is different rates in different areas.
