Maybe we should have a tips and tricks thread?

We're with bulb. Rural property 2 up
2 down with original single glazed windows but it's grade 1 listed so we're screwed there barely have the heating on as it is. We set the thermostat to 17 if the heating is on. We don't have it on over night and it's usually around 13 degrees in the morning when we get up. We have a multi fuel stove that heats water as well as being a fire, so we use that in the morning when we get up, bank it over night so it's warm (ish) when we get up and then stoke it up for the day. We have pans that can cook on top of it because we had no power for well over 10 days after storm Arwen so now I'm practicing my techniques

Electricity unit rates from 20.131to 28.020p
Electricity day charge from 24.373p to 42.242p

Gas 4.043p to 7.343p
Standing charge 26.112p to 27.219p

Direct debit has gone from £90 to £201.67

I'm with Shell

New rate electricity: 29.63p per kWh standing charge 32.14p per day
New rate gas: 7.51p per per kWh standing charge 27.22p per day

Bills gone up by £800 a year.

the80sweregreat · 26/02/2022 15:28

I'm with shell energy too.
It's going up by 825 a year, currently pay 126 a month for both , so will be around 198 in April I think.
Although we are in credit by a few hundred pounds and coming into spring , but it's the standing charges that will keep it high.
We try to keep the bills down as much as possible as most people are doing , but still it goes up

didBI · 26/02/2022 15:41

29.x p / KWh, per unit rate. East anglia.

vinoandbrie · 26/02/2022 15:45

I’m on a fixed rate until end of May.

I clicked on ‘switch my fixed rate deal’ on my providers website, and I feel sick. Our lowest priced option is £614pcm for gas and electricity.

We currently pay £285. I feel quite sick.

the80sweregreat · 26/02/2022 15:55

Vino, that is a huge jump , double almost. It is bad :( I am sorry
I did a comparison website to see what's out there and couldn't get anything any cheaper than what shell are offering. They were all more.

cptartapp · 26/02/2022 16:12

20.05p/kWh and 18.48 p/day standing charge. 4 bed house.
We're paying £84 a month and are just over £100 in credit.
Fixed until Sept 23 with Eon.
No gas.

SlipperyLizard · 26/02/2022 16:24

I’m with Outfox the Market too - our house is generally cold (thermostat rarely on more than 18, and hardly use heating during the day), and I try to make everyone turn lights etc off. Not long ago we were paying £130 a month, we’re already on almost twice that and it will only get higher come April.

We’re lucky that we will be ok, but we will need to cut back elsewhere.

Svara · 26/02/2022 16:36

We are on the SVR, currently £63 a month, so should go up to £90 something in April then more in October. That would be based on previous usage though and we have cut back on heating and shower times the last month or so. Don't know exact rates for our region.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/02/2022 16:42

I haven't had anything to say mine is increasing, is it only a matter of time?

Are you on a variable or fixed tariff?
WaffleWaffles · 26/02/2022 16:54

Also with bulb

electricity unit rate from 20.581p to 27.865p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 25.083p to 48.127p per day

gas unit rate from 4.046p to 7.367p per kWh and standing charge from 26.112p to 27.219p per day

monthly payments from £113.79 to £152.75

What are your new energy rates?
bruce43mydog · 26/02/2022 17:03

my electricity has gone up by £458 annually and my gas has gone up by £1297 per year

Susurrar · 26/02/2022 17:06

We’re going from £130 to £210pcm. I haven’t got the breakdown in front of me but the increase is quite scary, especially given that we’ve always been in credit.

the80sweregreat · 26/02/2022 17:09

This is it, most people paying direct debit each month are in credit I would imagine ( mine ask for readings every month ) yet the prices go up and up , feels so unfair and don't forget the 5 percent vat for the government too ;(
They will be quids in come April.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/02/2022 18:55

@FourTeaFallOut just checked and it says 'flexible.'

Octopus? It's going up on April 1st but they haven't informed customers of the rates yet.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/02/2022 19:07

Something to look forward to then Hmm

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2022 19:14

They should be telling you about the increase soon and what it means for your particular bill but expect for each unit of electricity in April to be 8p more than now and each unit of gas to be 3p more and for the standing charge on electricity to go up by an additional 20p/ day give or take. The specifics depend on your area and your supplier but that should give you a reasonable ballpark figure.

FatFredsFriedEgg · 26/02/2022 19:23

I still can't get my head around this massive electricity standing charge increase. It's obviously nothing to do with gas prices because it's not linked to consumption and gas SC hasn't gone up by anything like that amount.

Is it something to do with an industry levy for the takeovers of failing energy companies maybe? Does anyone know?

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2022 19:27

Yes. I think it's a payment to cover the costs for failed suppliers. I suppose if they said that explicitly though you'd have to have a messy conversation about why those on fixed tariffs have avoided that charge.

FourTeaFallOut · 26/02/2022 19:29

Sorry, that should have said 'towards the costs'.

Doratheexploret · 26/02/2022 19:31

SSE - we haven’t received anything yet.

I already pay £300 for both a month.

skeemee · 26/02/2022 19:40

We are with bulb. Currently paying £400-£450 per month!! That’s for actual use, as i cancelled my DD when they went bust. So they reckon we will need to increase that by £160 pm. I have no idea how we are going to afford £600pm. I can’t believe our bills are so high. Four adults 1920s extended bungalow. I don’t even put the heating on during day when I’m wfh.

To me that means the question needs to be asked.

Why isn't Martin Lewis on MN?

Unprecedentedusername · 26/02/2022 19:51

Gas gone up from £2.5k a year to £4.5k
