Maybe we should have a tips and tricks thread?

We're with bulb. Rural property 2 up
2 down with original single glazed windows but it's grade 1 listed so we're screwed there barely have the heating on as it is. We set the thermostat to 17 if the heating is on. We don't have it on over night and it's usually around 13 degrees in the morning when we get up. We have a multi fuel stove that heats water as well as being a fire, so we use that in the morning when we get up, bank it over night so it's warm (ish) when we get up and then stoke it up for the day. We have pans that can cook on top of it because we had no power for well over 10 days after storm Arwen so now I'm practicing my techniques

Electricity unit rates from 20.131to 28.020p
Electricity day charge from 24.373p to 42.242p

Gas 4.043p to 7.343p
Standing charge 26.112p to 27.219p

Direct debit has gone from £90 to £201.67

@skeemee

We are with bulb. Currently paying £400-£450 per month!! That’s for actual use, as i cancelled my DD when they went bust. So they reckon we will need to increase that by £160 pm. I have no idea how we are going to afford £600pm. I can’t believe our bills are so high. Four adults 1920s extended bungalow. I don’t even put the heating on during day when I’m wfh.
The paragraph below that says what your monthly cost will be

Yours says what?

AfraidToRun · 26/02/2022 20:17

My new standing charge is 52p a day and I think per unit is 28p. Its really shocking.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 26/02/2022 20:18

For those who have had suppliers increase their DDs, you don't have to accept their estimates or changes. My supplier tried to double my monthly payment and I logged in to edit it back to what it was because I prefer to have a small DD and then make a manual payment for anything over and above that. Of course, that only works if you want to pay that way - some would prefer to average things out over the year, in which case a DD that is, in effect, your yearly usage divided by 12 works fine.

My electricity account is only ever in a small credit (over the summer when my usage is less than my DD) or at zero balance (in winter, because I give a monthly reading, get a monthly bill and pay that sum less the value of my DD). I refuse to allow my money to sit in a supplier's bank account, not least because they can be sly buggers about giving big credits back. Of course, they always witter on that it's in your interest but really it's in theirs and they can fuck right off with that. On the odd occasion I've had a supplier quibble about reducing a DD I've offered them a choice: reduce the DD or I'll cancel it. They've never once chosen the cancel option Grin

I can't remember the specifics but the standing charge for electric and unit rate for gas is pretty much doubling. Based on estimated use it's over £1000 a year. We're just not sure yet what estimated use that is - our account has been in dispute since we moved in August. We submit readings but the energy company aren't accepting them despite sending a member of staff to take the readings for themselves some time last year. We think the previous owners over paid based on estimated not readings. Unsurprisingly we've still had to carry on paying the DD

@thanktor

No new monthly dd (maybe because I’m paying actual usage now). But saying an extra £40 per week = £160 per month ☹️

I wonder if 'actual usage' means the same as a 'Standard Credit Account' in energy supply terms?

If that's the case it seems that the price cap can be higher than if you pay a regular amount each month ('budget account' etc.).

I'm with Bulb for gas and electric both on prepay

We're increasing our electricity unit rate from 20.420p to 29.390p per kWh and electricity standing charge from 27.670p to 37.135p per day.

We're increasing our gas unit rate from 4.125p to 7.490p per kWh and standing charge from 35.130p to 37.280p per day.

These prices all include VAT at 5%.

Based on your usage, we think you'll spend £8.16 more a week on your energy.

CombatBarbie · 26/02/2022 21:34

@pradavilla I'm with outfox the market too but I'm still on no standing charge from 1 Apr, the kw rate has gone from 28p to 33p as we also currently on variable.

CombatBarbie · 26/02/2022 21:37

@pradavilla there's no standing charge is you're on DD, it's the bill on paper that's attracting standing daily charge.....

skeemee · 27/02/2022 11:57

As far as I’m aware, bulb only have one tariff, which is called Varifair.

I’m all for reducing my costs, so if anyone knows if reverting to DD would help, I would be more than happy to do so.

RetireReady · 27/02/2022 12:19

Last August I was in credit and paying about £70 a month dual fuel for 4 bed house. After end of contract with pure planet it went up to the cap of £112 a month and then on being switched to shell have just been informed that my annual expenditure is estimated to be just over 2 k (about 170 a month).

mum2jakie · 27/02/2022 12:25

I'm with Bulb too, electricity standing charge up from 25.083p to 48.127p. Gas from 26.112p up to 27.219p. Massive rise for electricity especially as unit costs also increasing significantly!
