...to not be distraught about the war in Ukraine

AIBU to have no clue why so many people on MN are so worried?

In my lifetime there have been many terrible wars in other countries and this country has been to war five times. This war doesn't involve us and any effects on us will be minor compared to what we've just experienced.

I completely understand people feeling worried for Ukrainians (as for any country in crisis) but why so much worry for us?

He will not stop at Ukraine. Putin does not regard the Balkan states as independent countries. He wants it all to be part of Russia.Once he has Ukraine he will move on to others.

RobotValkyrie · 25/02/2022 09:34

YABVU for being blind to the wider implications.

I feel sorry for Ukrainian people, but no more than I was for Syrian people, or any other innocent civilians caught up in a war anywhere in the world. Yeah, sucks to be them. Hope I never have to be in their shoes.

I feel VERY concerned about what Putin's next move might be. His end game isn't clear at all. The means at his disposal are multiple and enormous (so are the West's, but we're not that well organised right now... as democracies, we're slower to move and have more to lose).
Current situation isn't remotely comparable to anything any one of us (or any human being who has ever lived, for that matter) has lived through before. Comparisons with any previous wars are entirely moot. If you don't understand that (the kind of resources and technologies potentially involved... from conventional weapons and WMDs, to energy supplies and financial pipelines, and through the ever-so-tangled web of the virtual battlefront), then there's no point talking to you.

I just hope current physical aggression stays in Ukraine and doesn't spread to any NATO countries. But there's zero guarantee of that, and then all bets are off.

In the mean time, it's clear all of us will have to pay more to keep our houses warm, and surely we're at least allowed to worry about that? Global instability isn't good for anyone's wallet.
And I was sort of looking forward things going back to "normal" after COVID (and just need to worry about "trivial" things like global warning... without the now very tangible threat of WW3 being thrown into the equation...)

LowlandLucky · 25/02/2022 09:39

OP I think most of us would love to live in your world.

readingismycardio · 25/02/2022 09:40

137 people died yesterday. Is that enough for you to care? Smile

donquixotedelamancha · 25/02/2022 09:53

137 people died yesterday. Is that enough for you to care?

10,000 people died of starvation yesterday. Do you not care about them, you monster?

He will not stop at Ukraine. Putin does not regard the Balkan states as independent countries. He wants it all to be part of Russia. Once he has Ukraine he will move on to others.

Do you mean the Baltic states or do you think Serbia is his next target?

The UK is the exact kind of trophy that motivates a man like Putin.

Do you think we will be invaded before or after the invasion of the Balkans suggested by PP?

educate yourself on these matters before posting again.

Well, I'm working on it- MN posters are very kindly helping me.

You're deviating from your initial post of people being scared a little (imo)

Yes, deviating wildly. How Germany intends to meet it's green energy targets has come up. That's because very few of the posts are actually related to the OP with many people thinking not personly scared = wants people to die and loves Putin.

but the reason we can't do nothing now is why we couldn't do anything then. Ukraine was a buffer state, there are plenty of people still around today who thinks the west/NATO is to blame, the modern tabloid reader is trying to equate a geopolitical situation as somehow pushing an alternative story because they follow an opinion on twitter.

Yes I agree that the Ukraine situation is highly complex and doing nothing was a perfectly reasonable response (not least because many citizens would not welcome our beaks stuck in).

My point was that if the West did want to prevent Russia (at least) annexing the East then the last chance to act was really when Crimea was invaded and it would have required robust action.

It seems silly to me to be so belicose but then do nothing to stop Russia achieveing it's goals. China's behaviour (and some of our allies in the middle East) is just as bad as Russia but we tread a much more careful line of engagement without condoning their crimes.

@Kassle

Russia has an estimated 13,000 tanks compared to our 300 and that's without their nuclear collection!

Well we wouldn't be fighting them alone.

France has 200, many friendly countries a similar amount and getting into a full scale war with nuclear weapons available would be extremely dangerous.

OP never said she didn't care.

Caring and being worried are separate things.

I care - I've donated to Ukraine aid, I'm looking for other practical things I can do. But I'm not worried, which would be pointless and ineffective.

Op votes Tory... I can just feel it.

"It doesn't affect me so fuck em" is the Tory motto

TuscanApothecary · 25/02/2022 12:07

OP votes Tory maybe that's better then voting Labour and the shit show of the middle east that caused. We literally sold the guns that were used in battle against our own army..

I have never voted Tory BTW. I just think assuming OP votes Tory because of her thoughts on this is slightly ridiculous considering the last Labour government's stance on war...

@Nancydrawn
And fun to read!

Crankley · 25/02/2022 12:39

Putin has threatened the West with nuclear retaliation a few hours ago.

No he didn't

What do you call this then:

"Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a chilling warning to Western nations after mounting a full scale invasion of Ukraine.

Putin has announced Russia had launched a military attack on Ukraine, warning 'outside' nations: "Whoever tries to hinder us, or threaten our country or our people, should know that Russia’s response will be immediate and will lead you to consequences that you have never faced in your history.

"We are ready for any turn of events. All necessary decisions in this regard have been made. I hope that I will be heard."

Kassle · 25/02/2022 12:48

Putin has threatened the West with nuclear retaliation a few hours ago.

I don't know why so many are getting in a tizz about this because that's literally the point of nuclear weapons - to scare off other countries because they're worried you'll nuke them.

How seriously would you take him if he said "Oh it's a war but no worries, I won't use nukes".

Threatening to use them and actually using them are very different things.

no your not being unreasonable I dont get whats wrong with people either.

were they like this with chimea? serbia? etc during the india/Pakistan boarder clashes? etc I dont recall them being so. I blame media scaremongering.

Kassle · 25/02/2022 12:56

I blame media scaremongering.

I'm so sick of seeing this woefully unintelligent and tedious take.

aldilemonade · 25/02/2022 12:58

I am not affected by the war but i am so angry that the world is standing back and letting this happen.
I know Putin has threatened anybody who stands in his way but if we don't do something god only knows where this will end.
Children are being killed innocent people are dying.
What will it take for someone to say enough.

Cognoscenti · 25/02/2022 13:00

I'm also angry no-one is doing anything. I hate war, I hate conflict in general, but my goodness I wish the UK and other NATO countries (I know Ukraine isn't in NATO) would just give it to Putin with both barrels. He needs to be stopped and sanctions mean nothing to him.

the media is scaremongering WW3 look at the history of ukraine you dont need to go that far back to gain an understanding of whats going on.

@donquixotedelamancha Watch the fucking news. How would feel if you lived in Ukraine? Show some respect and consideration for other people.

IcyWinterWonderland · 25/02/2022 13:27

@donquixotedelamancha oh and do you seriously think Putin will stop at Ukraine? No, he is trying to invade Europe, so that is everyone is so worried.

bedheadedzombie · 25/02/2022 13:28

@Blue4YOU

OP - with the greatest respect- which wars have been so terrifying? By that I mean Russia now has control of Chernobyl.. Putin has no soul. He directly threatened every other country or any country that threatens his attempts. If you mean to compare this to war in Iraq or Afghanistan or civil wars - none of them ACTUALLY had weapons of mass destruction (despite what we were told) or a man like Putin who can take down our banks, our internet (at a very minimum), send us into immediate oblivion if he so decides. I’m not sitting here terrified but I’m curious as to what other war you think went a bit like this in your lifetime..? (Or ever)
I'll bite.

Cold war was more terrifying than this.

I lived a lot closer to chernobyl back when the bloody thing had a meltdown. Not to scared about what's left of it now, from a great distance.

But have fun crying doooooom! Doooooooom! I've heard it so often already, and earth is still spinning. Cold war was going to end civilization. Y2k was going to end civilization. An astroid was going to end civilization. 9/11 was the start of the end of the world as we know it. 2012 was going to end humanity. This is just the newest thing.

@MaryAndHerNet Op votes Tory... I can just feel it.

I have never voted Tory in my life. I'm a union rep and moderately left wing.

That said I am not childish enough to imagine the 40% of the population who vote Tory are evil and everyone else is lovely.

"It doesn't affect me so fuck em" is the Tory motto"It doesn't affect me so fuck em" is the Tory motto

I certainly don't think 'fuck em'. What should I be doing? Perhaps I can join in with your effort to help Ukraine?
