Found money … what should I do !

Hi so a couple weeks ago I visited my sister and we went around a good few charity shops like we always do when we see each other.

I noticed a lovely patchwork type of quilted blanket that looked like it was hand made ! I paid for it and it’s been still in the carrier bag till this morning as I wanted to wash it first before use

I was checking for any washing instructions on the labels and that’s when I noticed that in one quarter of the blanket it felt different … the more I pressed on that area the more I could almost feel something move so curiously I made a cut and I’ve found money inside

It’s not old notes , it’s uk money and quite a chunk. Most of it in £50 notes and we are talking over £1000, I don’t want to say how many thousands

I don’t know what to do. Go back to the shop? Or keep it

I’m due to go on holiday soon and it would really help with expenses

Of course you can keep it. But as others say, it would be nice to give at least some of it to the charity for the shop. No need to mention it to anyone from there. You were lucky! What a funny place to hide your live savings.

This is a zombie thread over 2 years old!

This happened to a friend . She donated an item to a charity shop , I cannot remember whet it was , but there was over a thousand euro hidden in it .

She remembered in the subsequent days but the item was gone .

Luckily she was contacted in the next few weeks by the shop to say a person had brought back the money .

Fair play to you OP for being straight about this. I'd have handed the money in but I can understand others not doing so. What I really dislike is when OPs on similar threads want to keep the money but want to be able to justify. They scrabble around to try and find a reason that the moral thing to do is to keep the money. I'd much people be honest with their intentions iyswim

Healthyhappymama · 24/02/2024 19:28

100% keep it.

feelingalittlehorse · 24/02/2024 19:34

If the item is handmade/ one of a kind, they may know who has donated it. I would probably go in and ask- come up with a banal excuse.

Honestly, if they don’t know, and no-one has come forwards asking for it back, then I’d keep it.

Right then, it's a hand-made quilt
Why would you be looking for a care label for how to wash it?

Chocolateorange11 · 24/02/2024 20:52

i bet they can trace whoever donated.

I regularly donate to charity. I am registered for an additional 25% gift aid I had to register my details. Every time they sell one of my old belongings they email me to tell me.

I couldn’t keep it, it just wouldn’t sit well with me at all.

Boombastic22 · 24/02/2022 21:27

Take it back to the shop/tell the police! Can’t believe you’d possibly think of keeping it.

Can't believe you'd think of not keeping it and why on earth would you tell the police?

SecretSquare · 24/02/2024 21:11

ZOMBIE

Itiswhysofew · 24/02/2024 21:32

ZOMBIE, ZOMBIE, ZOMBIEGrin

Maybe the person that donated it, checked with the police to see if it'd been handed in.

Firefly1987 · 24/02/2024 22:01

I can't believe I got all invested in this and ends up it's a 2 year old thread! Grr. My grandmother once found £20 in the street (back when £20 was loads of money) and took it to the police station to see if they could find the owner. The police officer wasn't very interested and a bit perplexed why she didn't just keep it (mumsnet morals there) although he did say "well I'll take that for you" to which my grandmother replied "no you won't!" and she donated it to charity.

She never would've thought of keeping it-can't believe so many on here would keep literally THOUSANDS of pounds that belongs to someone else. It's like finding money in the ATM that someone has accidentally left, do you just take that as well?! Are you ok with others doing that with YOUR money?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 24/02/2024 22:10

Cherryana · 24/02/2022 21:50

You bought the complete item. It belongs to you.

Including the hidden money pocket and contents.

I can’t believe the amount of people telling you to go to the police and/or back to the shop. They can’t be located and it’s their carelessness, enjoy your good fortune!

Go on. I'll buy it. You are a lawyer and can quote legislation or case law to back this assertation up.

Please do.

I'd try to find out if the charity shop knew who donated it. You could also try the community Facebook page where the charity shop was and ask if anyone knows anything about said blanket (without revealing why). If nothing comes of that then I'd probably keep it.....

Treehuggingmutherfunkin · 24/02/2024 23:55

Keep it you were meant to find it. Enjoy your holiday.
I found £20 today on the road

Treehuggingmutherfunkin · 24/02/2024 23:58

They won't be able to trace it. I give a lot to charity I just drop it and go. The staff will keep it.
Just donate a bit to charity and use the rest for your holiday.

Treehuggingmutherfunkin · 25/02/2024 00:01

Sorry just realised this was old lol I did find £20 today tho which is unusual these days does anyone still take cash?

mjf981 · 25/02/2024 00:08

I wouldn't have banked it. If you get audited, you'll have to explain where it came from ,and may end up paying tax on it.

Pussycat22 · 25/02/2024 00:09

She has bought the item by mg of you on my own in good faith, made a legal transaction, the money is hers!! It would be like buying a little ornament from a charity shop which turned out to be Fabergé - bought in good faith and PAID for!

Legally it’s theft but odds were good that she’d get away with it and it seems like she has.
