Found money … what should I do !

Hi so a couple weeks ago I visited my sister and we went around a good few charity shops like we always do when we see each other.

I noticed a lovely patchwork type of quilted blanket that looked like it was hand made ! I paid for it and it’s been still in the carrier bag till this morning as I wanted to wash it first before use

I was checking for any washing instructions on the labels and that’s when I noticed that in one quarter of the blanket it felt different … the more I pressed on that area the more I could almost feel something move so curiously I made a cut and I’ve found money inside

It’s not old notes , it’s uk money and quite a chunk. Most of it in £50 notes and we are talking over £1000, I don’t want to say how many thousands

I don’t know what to do. Go back to the shop? Or keep it

I’m due to go on holiday soon and it would really help with expenses

Id keep it, and donate some to somewhere, but not necessarily the shop.

Going into a charity shop and handing over a bag of cash, how can you guarantee that its going to go to the charity and not anyone elses pockets?

DontBeMean · 25/02/2022 17:04

@Brighton5555

I used a small amount to upgrade seats , on top of making two donations. The rest I’m keeping in my bank.

It doesn’t make me a bad person ! Grow up

Yeah it does. I've more respect for people who are upfront when they do something wrong. At least the are honest about themselves. Trying to dress it up as anything other than what it is is a bit pathetic. It's wrong to keep the money and trying to pretend otherwise is hypocritical.

Without saying why try to find out from the charity shop form when it came. It might be drug money, proceeds of crime and a killer might come after the money and you so be careful.

Seriously, a killer crocheter? Grin
VanGoghsDog · 25/02/2022 17:32

You do know that it's not only people who actually make stuff who own it? My mum has crochet stuff and patchwork quilts, she's never been seen to lift any type of needle in her life.

Grin this is the most out there suggestion yet! It was sold to you as seen, your to keep and spend as you want. People quoting laws where money is found, this wasn't found in a shop, it formed part of the item purchased. Same as buying a costume ring with a real diamond in it.
Oblomov22 · 25/02/2022 17:34

I would phone them shop. If they aren't contacted soon, At least you know you've done the right thing.

VillanellesOrangeCoat · 25/02/2022 17:36

JFC some of the responses on here!! OP you carry on & enjoy the rest of the money. As pp’s have said who work in charity shops, they won’t be able to trace the original owner and who knows, it might be a 3rd or 4th hand item with any one of the previous owners sewing the money into it. Impossible for anyone to know.

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 17:38

If I buy a coat in a charity shop and there's a used hanky in the pocket, do I need to contact the shop so that they can reunite it with the donor?

Like a used hanky is in anyway comparable to possibly several thousand pounds in cash?
reshetima · 25/02/2022 17:52

For those who are saying that the charity shop cannot trace the owner: in fact there are increasing numbers of charity shops who do record the donor in order that they can claim Gift Aid relief.

This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read on here.

Ramalamadingdongs · 25/02/2022 17:57

I bought a handbag once at an auction house. It had £60 in the inside pocket. Never crossed my mind to do anything other than keep it to be honest. I just thought the previous owner should have checked the pockets before they sold it.

Now that is dishonest. The auction house would know who the seller was.

Thanks.

At least he Quilt of Guilt hadn't been washed or it would be laundered money

Maves · 25/02/2022 18:04

Why ask on here at all if you kept it and banked me it the same day and don't feel guilty? Obviously just to brag but it backfired cos honestly it's awful you haven't made any attempt to find anything out wether it came to anything or not. You do know that money will bring bad on you I know that.

Dear god! That's a reach by anyones standards, even mumsnet! Grin
Ramalamadingdongs · 25/02/2022 18:07

Ah well. I can live with that. It was 10 years ago anyway. At auction you buy and sell as seen. I frequently buy furniture at auction which sometimes has things in the drawers etc. If I've bought that item, it's mine including the contents.

Oh yeah it will definitely bring bad on you, the money god in the sky will be drawing up a list of awful things to put on you.

This is a really nasty comment as if actions bring bad on people, but if something happens to OP you expect her to assume she brought it on herself?

So if anything bad happens to someone, miscarriage, close death, accident etc, they've brought it on themselves.

You need to consider what you're saying because it's awful.

Bad happens to anyone. It doesn't know any previous misdemeanour, it's just sometimes shit happens.

Nasty comment.

There's a difference between £60 and thousands of pounds...
Boombastic22 · 25/02/2022 18:18

I’m presuming this is a wind up. As it’s surely theft.

Quite incredible behaviour from the OP.

Doratheexploret · 25/02/2022 18:21

Keep it. The charity shop won’t have any idea who donated it. My sister bought a house once where the owner had died without a will. . They bought the house with everything in it. They found thousands in saucepans, under the mattress etc.

KirstenBlest · 25/02/2022 18:24

Not in principle.
There's a difference in that the handbag was bought at auction and the quilt was bought in a shop
