Found money … what should I do !

Hi so a couple weeks ago I visited my sister and we went around a good few charity shops like we always do when we see each other.

I noticed a lovely patchwork type of quilted blanket that looked like it was hand made ! I paid for it and it’s been still in the carrier bag till this morning as I wanted to wash it first before use

I was checking for any washing instructions on the labels and that’s when I noticed that in one quarter of the blanket it felt different … the more I pressed on that area the more I could almost feel something move so curiously I made a cut and I’ve found money inside

It’s not old notes , it’s uk money and quite a chunk. Most of it in £50 notes and we are talking over £1000, I don’t want to say how many thousands

I don’t know what to do. Go back to the shop? Or keep it

I’m due to go on holiday soon and it would really help with expenses

Do people actually believe this is really though?

WhatICallMyUsername · 25/02/2022 18:48

The thing is, even if the charity shop does know who donated it, how do we know they are the rightful owners of the money? Perhaps it had already been donated and they'd bought it from a charity shop themselves and then donated it again. Which puts them in exactly the same position as the OP! And obviously they can't prove how much money there is as they wouldn't know themselves!

Enjoy your fortune OP!

real

I think it's Richard Osman doing research for his latest novel.

I simply don't believe you found thousands of pounds stitched inside a quilt. I've worked in charity shops and donated goods are thoroughly checked before going on display. I also don't believe the bank accepted a deposit in cash, of a large amount of money, without asking questions. Money laundering is a crime that banks are shit hot at spotting.

I think this is a fairytale, but if by some remote chance it's true, then shame on you.

TroysMammy · 25/02/2022 19:25

Why did you ask on MN what to do because you obviously made your mind up to keep it even though you were advised of the right and moral action you should take? I hope it comes and bites you on the arse.

I believe you. I have also worked in charity shops and whilst things are cleaned and tidied up, they are not turned inside out and made to be pristine.

There would be no way to trace who donated it.

Enjoy your holiday, you lucky duck.

Can I come too

Brighton5555 · 25/02/2022 20:54

We deposited some large sums of money to our bank and at the time we weren't asked any questions. Months down the line though we were asked to provide evidence of where the money came from. No queries when we actually did the depositting though

@Boombastic22

Take it back to the shop/tell the police! Can’t believe you’d possibly think of keeping it.
😂 As if!
Jk987 · 25/02/2022 22:01

You should contact the charity shop. The person who donated the blanket might have gone back to the shop desperately trying to get it back after realising the mistake.

If the shop have no record of anyone contacting them about it then it's yours.

purpleroses100 · 25/02/2022 22:03

Darling just accept you had a blessing from the universe. Give thanks and enjoy your holiday with the money and wish happiness and good energy in dedication to her. The charity already got paid. Charity starts at home and you found it once you got in your house Grin

You snooze, you lose!
watchingrnfire · 25/02/2022 22:40

Give some in charity and keep the rest. Take it as a blessing and be thankful. No point returning it to the shop or police, they won't know who the owner is.

Blubbergalore · 25/02/2022 22:59

@Notdoingthis

When I donate items I give my details so they can get giftaid. You may be able to find out who donated the quilt if you wanted to. They can't find you though.
I very much doubt a charity shop would just hand over a donor's details, data protection and all that.
Gregsprinkles · 25/02/2022 23:21

I hope you at least give some to charity OP.

caringcarer · 25/02/2022 23:33

I'd split into 3. Give 1 part to your sister, keep one part and donate one part to your favourite charity.

xxxsuper · 25/02/2022 23:34

You know they could contact the donor for OP though, right?

Anyway it's irrelevant now isn't it? OP has spent it on posh seats

Shannonz · 25/02/2022 23:38

Personally I would keep it.

But the ‘right’ thing to do would be to ring the charity shop and ask if anyone has contacted them regarding missing money. Although a part of me really does think this could be a random act of kindness from someone, stranger things have happened.

DaphneSprucesPippasClack · 25/02/2022 23:52

Well done. You might not be a bad person, but you didn't do the right thing.

BuyDirt · 26/02/2022 00:54

👃 💩

Rosebel · 26/02/2022 01:10

It's highly unlikely the shop will know who donated it. They don't take names and addresses.
Just incase give them a call and see if anyone has asked about the missing money. If they say no then keep the money but make a donation.
I wouldn't feel too bad. I bet it was from a house clearance after someone died so no one will miss the money.

Libertybear80 · 26/02/2022 01:28

Just keep it. Don't beat yourself up!
