Pregnant after sterilisation aibu to want answers

TeddyisMydog · 24/02/2022 16:17

Hmm so maybe this does not belong in aibu but I need answers and I'm not getting enough from anyone else.

Two weeks ago I randomly tested positive on a pregnancy test, undoubtedly obvious positive but I took a CB digital which was negative.
Another first response test done the next day also blazing positive and away I went to the GP. Who referred me for a termination and said I should get the coil Angry

On the 16th I had a private scan done and I was told I had miscarried.
A few hours later I started to bleed.

The bleed lasted 1 day, I didn't take anymore tests until Monday 21st where it shows positive.

Back and forth to get referred to early pregnancy unit for a scan, armed with my pregnancy test from this morning (which they said is too faint to be accurate 🤨)
They scanned me, they can see my womb lining is thick. And guessed a chemical pregnancy or indeed a very very early miscarriage.

They took a blood test for hcg which has come back as 2!!! 2! Why am I getting such strong tests if the result is 2? I asked about speaking to see someone to check internally if my tubes are still tied and was told "we don't do that here" despite the GP saying that's the bare minimum I'd get.

Can anyone throw light on this please? I don't feel safe to have sex atm Sad I'm so confused and it doesn't seem possible to speak to anyone about this! Picture of my test attached

I'm no expert but if you are pregnant after having had your tubes tied, it could be an ectopic pregnancy

Gizacluethen · 24/02/2022 16:30

I'd expec them to be far more concerned considering the risk of an ectopic. All you can do is push your gp to refer you to check your tubes.

Because of the scan I had they did check but they said no signs of ectopic which is a good thing but I can't help but feel like there is something I've missed

Are you close to menopause age ?

TeddyisMydog · 24/02/2022 17:12

I'm only 28 so I hope not lol

Ahh okay nope. I think you definitely need answers !

I’m pregnant with final DC and am being sterilised when they are born (c section). I was told that they now remove both of your entire tubes as when they ‘snip’ them they can actually grow back together and you can end up pregnant again. It’s also apparently better because it decreases your risk of ovarian cancer to take the whole tube away. Sorry not sure that helps but thought I’d share!

Yeah it doesn't help me lol as I'm pretty sure either they've done it wrong so it was guaranteed to fail from the start or my tubes have healed and un tied themselves. They won't do the sterilisation again so now I'm just left 🙃 I've got pregnant on other contraception so I wanted something permanent

With a low hCG level, sterilisation and a positive test, I would be seriously concerned about ectopic pregnancy. You must go back to the early pregnancy unit ASAP.

PixiKitKat · 24/02/2022 19:27

I cannot help with the pregnancy aspect, but at 28, did you have a hard time convincing a dr to sterilise you? Do you already have children?

PixiKitKat · 24/02/2022 19:28

Only asking as I'd like to be sterilised but assumed it would be hard to get since I'm slightly older than you and don't have kids.

Nelliephant1 · 24/02/2022 19:32

My friends tubes healed and she now has a bouncing 10 year old who is the apple of her eye. Every cloud!

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 24/02/2022 19:32

At 2 surely this is just the remnants of HcG?? You are clearly not still pregnant at least and often ectopic pregnancies have higher HcG levels (in my horribly frequent experience). I would suggest you just now test again in a week. If there were any products of conception left they would've seen them.
As for moving forward, I'm not sure. I have hyperfertility and have managed to get pregnant despite having clips (and at times using every other method of contraception), but luckily I'm hopefully now beyond the point. Huzzah perimenopause!

coffeecup88 · 24/02/2022 19:35

Sorry OP I'd be worried about an ectopic too. Id not been sterilised but a similar thing happened to me (2 negative scans, not really enough bleeding for a miscarriage and faint positive tests). I was in quite a state by the time they finally diagnosed it. I would go back and be assertive. Have they offered you serial blood tests for hcg? Mine were increasing but very slowly.

But the test I used is incredibly sensitive but not sensitive enough that it would pick it up at only 2 surely? They seen on the scan the thickness of my womb which was 20 mm so they assumed early miscarriage or a chemical pregnancy and its just not all come away Sad The test in my photo I took at 10am, an hour before my appointment. It is very dark in person, imo it shouldn't be this dark with only a level of 2 Confused

I never ever want to be in this position again so thankfully sex is the last thing on my mind, frankly I would now be terrified every time

Hello, I do have other children yes and I've recently had a c section so I had my tubes tied during it I do think it would be hard to get them to agree when you don't have children Sad which is so so wrong.

I was even asked by my consultant if my children die and I was sterilised what would I do Angry it's disgusting! We are more than old enough to be fully aware of what we are doing! X

They checked my tubes during the scan and cannot find any hint of a pregnancy outside of my womb. My womb is incredibly thick so they've assumed miscarriage that hasn't yet finished No other blood test either, it's taken me two weeks just for them to do that 1 blood test!

I have felt so suicidal over the last fortnight, I was gearing up to go through a termination trying to get myself to learn with the guilt. I have a three month old baby and should never have been in this position but everyone seems to be shrugging their shoulders.
I fully believe a termination would have pushed me to the point of no return yet I'm told to "just get the coil" Sad

No method of contraception is 100% effective.
Sterilisation has a 0.5% failure rate.
Implant is the most effective method with 0.05% failure rate.
Mirena IUS is also more effective than sterilisation.

No I know that but surely it shouldn't have failed just 11 weeks after it was done?! I was told its far more likely to get pregnant around the year mark once the body had fully healed but 11 weeks!

I can't have any coils due to personal reasons and I really don't fancy the implant, horror stories of waiting months for it to be removed if it doesn't agree with you & in my case it probably wouldn't. I've reacted badly to most contraception or I've got pregnant on it Sad

Wow. I hope you reported that consultant because that’s highly unprofessional. Wtf?!

I went to request my tubes thing and was told by the Dr that it was less effective than the pill.I was very shocked at that.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/02/2022 20:31

I got steralised 21 years ago by going private, and my doctor had me wait for nearly a year after I gave birth because the failure rate is apparently much higher when the procedure is done during childbirth. I'm sorry you're going through this. What a nightmare.

Darbs76 · 24/02/2022 20:33

I think most doctors will ask you that question about losing a child. Especially if someone is sterilised when they have a young baby. It’s right to consider that prospect, as horrible it is to think about unfortunately it is something some couples will face after sterilisation when they think their family is complete

TaylorsSwimShorts · 24/02/2022 20:36

I was sterilised during section 4 years ago with my 6th child...currently sat here 8 months pregnant 🙄 I was initially told "its a risk you take when getting sterilised during a section" but after further complaining and an investigation, it turns out that the surgery was done incorrectly, one tube was left partially intact, and as if that wasn't bad enough, the lab didn't confirm the tube samples sent to them were correct, 2 huge mess ups, so it may be worth asking for the hospital to check the lab reports to check 2 full tubes were taken...
