It's not WW3

To wish people would stop conflating the Ukrainian invasion with WW3.

It's shite and completely unacceptable and my thoughts are with thee innocent people affected but it is not a world war and isn't going to become one.

IABU - WW3 is here
IANBU - it's a localised war.

@ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor

He’s not going to stop at Ukraine and if he gets his hands on Chernobyl we’re all fucked. How would you feel if he decides to invade the uk and other countries just stood and watched?
What do you imagine he's going to do with a derelict power station? You realise that Russia have their own, active, power stations, nuclear weapons, and presumably hundreds of tons of their own nuclear waste? What significance has Chernobyl got?

Calm down.

Kassle · 24/02/2022 16:26

From Twitter, on Chernobyl:

"Russians breached the Ukrainian border from Belarus in Chernobyl. The National Guard of Ukraine, which guards the storage of unsafe radioactive waste in Chernobyl, is fiercely resisting. If the occupiers' artillery strikes hit the nucler waste storage, radioactive dust will cover the EU."

MerryMarigold · 24/02/2022 16:26

It’s not going to get to that - Putin will just press the red button

Were you one of the people who filled your garage with toilet roll and pasta when lockdown was announced?

MerryMarigold · 24/02/2022 16:28

And presumably much of Russia and their mates in Belarus!

At last, a benefit of us leaving the EU.

With the way the wind is blowing right now, it'll get them first.

FixTheBone · 24/02/2022 16:32

YABU. It isn't world war three, but it may escalate that way.

Nope

Have you seen his televised address threatening a nuclear response ?

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 24/02/2022 16:40

I reckon putin's terminally ill and he's throwing a psycho episode because he knows he's not going to last much longer. He has cancer and parkinsonism apparently. He's toast and he knows it. Trouble is, will he take everyone else with him or is he just trying to take over Ukraine as some sort of way of concreting himself into history? I'm assuming he has adult children/grandchildren. Is he bothered about them dying in a nuclear holocaust?

CaveMum · 24/02/2022 16:42

@MerryMarigold

What's Chernobyl got to do with the price of eggs? It's shut down, isn't it? And not really a place anyone wants to be. All that could happen is that any Russians going there will end up with radiation poisoning.
I think the concern is more that any shelling in the area could hit the containment unit sending up a cloud of radioactive dust.
FatFredsFriedEgg · 24/02/2022 16:45

Well no, the proposition was: "He’s not going to stop at Ukraine and if he gets his hands on Chernobyl we’re all fucked."

threecupsofteaminimum · 24/02/2022 16:46

You know WWII started with the invasion of Poland, right..

DGRossetti · 24/02/2022 16:48

I would hope the Chernobyl sarcophagus was made strong enough to survive conventional shelling. Especially given it's location. If not, then someone dropped a ball somewhere.

It does not do to leave dragons out of your calculations if you live near one

MonStylo · 24/02/2022 16:49

How will this become WW3? Russia isn’t a wealthy country. Maybe if China joined in but why would they want to damage their export market like that? 18% of their exports go to the US (2% to Russia).

DGRossetti · 24/02/2022 16:49

@threecupsofteaminimum

You know WWII started with the invasion of Poland, right..
Well the UKs involvement in it did ...
FatFredsFriedEgg · 24/02/2022 16:51

It started in China. It's only from the UK's perspective that it started with the invasion of Poland.
Chocolattay · 24/02/2022 16:53

I bet you were the type to scream “Well China has a worse healthcare system than us so it won’t affect us and it’s only the vulnerable anyway!!!!” in the early days of Covid.

Chocolattay · 24/02/2022 16:55

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation.

This is how he comes across to me as well. He’s always been odd and aggressive but he’s reached a new level.

It’s like he’s bitter about getting old and so thinks he’ll just take everybody else with him.

wingscrow · 24/02/2022 16:56

Because some people just love a tragedy and some good hand-wringing... probably the same people who predicted Covid would bring the end of civilisation.

Since we have no power to affect what is going on there I don't quite see the use of panicking or trying to predict the future.

Stick to the facts. Right now it is a localised conflict. Nobody has a crystal ball to assume it will extend to more than that or. So you are quite correct right now there is no WW3 and it is idiotic to use that term.

CaMePlaitPas · 24/02/2022 16:57

People are blowing this out of proportion. Russia has gone to war before, look at the Ukraine in 2014 and Georgia in 2018. I'm not sure why this has attracted so much media attention this time around. I guess to ramp up the economy we need to sell arms to one another. But nuclear war? I'm not so convinced, what is the point in mutually assured destruction? The land becomes inhospitable, there's no one to trade with and everyone is dead. Putin is not to my taste, but he's not a fool.

Chocolattay · 24/02/2022 16:57

I honestly think if we get through this then countries need to stop electing men this old, I’m not joking at all. I’m deadly serious. They are more likely to behave recklessly.

CaMePlaitPas · 24/02/2022 16:57

I meant Georgia in 2008. Hope I haven't got that wrong a second time around.

DGRossetti · 24/02/2022 16:57

@MonStylo

There are countless examples around the world of countries that would rather wage war than feed their own people. Which - given the hungry homeless - includes the UK, with it's billions on "defence" ...

I don’t think Putin has actually been elected though has he? He runs a dictatorship.
