So my high school friend visiting me in April, first time we will meet since graduating from high school which was 30 years agoConfused I thought we treat ourselves to an afternoon tea in London. The choices are
Claridges
The Goring
Wolseley
Berners
Ritz
Savoy

Or if you have any other recommendation please add to the list but I need to decide soon! Help!

TIA

Not at all helpful Grin but the Signet Library in Edinburgh have a look at their sample menu

Agrudge · 24/02/2022 17:07

Oblix in the shard do a afternoon tea . Never been though

Lululemonade38 · 24/02/2022 17:12

The Landmark is my fave. Stunning venue and lovely, friendly staff. Ive been to few afternoon teas but this is my favorite.

ThinWomansBrain · 24/02/2022 17:19

Fortnum and Mason is great - and makes for a lovely treat after seeing something at the Royal Academy

ThinWomansBrain · 24/02/2022 17:24

F&M have a high tea option - a hot dish rather than sandwiches - means you can eat ALL the cakes and scones and not be carbed out Grin

Horological · 24/02/2022 17:31

Not The Ritz. Too touristy.

Seashor · 24/02/2022 17:36

The Berkeley.

Lauinlon · 24/02/2022 17:43

The Ritz was horrendous. It was like being on a conveyor belt. No charm, service was poor and it felt very overrated. The Savoy, Claridges and Browns are my top recommendations. Friendly, not stuffy but definitely ‘special’. Enjoy

Hobbesmanc · 24/02/2022 17:44

Connaught or the Savoy.

Had a sad disaster on Valentine's weekend at the new Biltmore. We booked because we love Jason Atherton but everything went wrong. Handled very well by the manager to be fair.

Howyoualldoworkme · 24/02/2022 17:47

Saw a programme about The Lanesborough the other night and their afternoon tea looked fantastic! Loads of it too Grin

spanieleyes · 24/02/2022 18:10

The Lanesborough IS lovely and the tea room beautiful. I also like Browns!

@Canhearthemice

Ive never bee to afternoon tea in London. When it says £70 for afternoon tea, would that be per person or for 2 people?
Per person.

You can get more of the savoury options, scones and cakes and you always get a takeaway beautiful box. Plus a different pot of tea from an extensive menu. I am always soooo full.

Omg, I'm in Edinburgh on Monday and Tuesday and would have treated myself, but they aren't open on those days. I wanted to go to Lescargot too and that's the same.

I’d say the savoy - though I imagine claridges or the ritz would be great too. I’ve done a load this past year and after the savoy, none of them have been quite so good. I’d avoid the Berkeley - I was looking forward to that one but service was awful and wasn’t too keen to find people sniffing white powder in the toilets when I took my daughter for a wee. Also didn’t think much of the Biltmore - nothing special. I’ve done a few at the chesterfield in Mayfair and always thought it was a good option but my last visit left a lot to be desired. I would also recommend the landmark in Marylebone. That’s a very special place. The savoy is wonderful though.

sociallydistained · 24/02/2022 18:27

💯 the Savoy. I've been to many and all have been nice. The Dorchester, Claridges etc but really loved the whole experience of the Savoy and I had many many sandwiches! I'm vegetarian and feel like they did the best selection and plenty of.

AnakinthePadawhine · 24/02/2022 18:27

The Goring is excellent, with scrumptious food and a very elegant ambiance.
I have also a great fondness for the Cafe Royale in Picadilly, as the gateaux are lovely and the gilded decoration nicely over the top.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 24/02/2022 18:50

The Landmark is my place of choice for afternoon tea. It’s lovely, fairly formal but you can go in wearing jeans or a really fancy, designer outfit. The room is a massive atrium and there is a piano played as well. Service is second to none. If the Landmark wasn’t available I would suggest The Dorchester but up on the balcony where there are only a few tables and service is out of this world.

I have been to Browns and The Langham and both are lovely too but neither would be my first choice.

CapitanSandy · 24/02/2022 18:53

The Langham is amazing

CantChatNow · 24/02/2022 19:06

I enjoyed the Dorchester when we went - very accommodating to a vegan!

propersobbing · 24/02/2022 19:08

Ham Yard Hotel is lovely for tea

ThanksItHasPockets · 24/02/2022 19:13

Just seen your update so this is academic but if you get the chance to go to Claridge's in the future then please do. It is wonderful.

The best value afternoon tea in my humble opinion is Fortnum and Mason. Sketch is fun but the food is secondary to the quirky interiors.

FangsForTheMemory · 24/02/2022 19:39

The Ritz is my favourite, followed closely by The Connaught. The staff make it special.

Selok · 25/02/2022 00:01

I will definitely ask these for my coming birthday, xmas pressies and so fort
Top of my list definitely Claridges, Langham, Savoy, Wolseley I really would like to try these in this year!

One Aldwych and Dean St Townhouse are my favourites

Browns has dropped off in the last few years imo. Rosewood is very photogenic (and delicious).
