So my high school friend visiting me in April, first time we will meet since graduating from high school which was 30 years agoConfused I thought we treat ourselves to an afternoon tea in London. The choices are
Claridges
The Goring
Wolseley
Berners
Ritz
Savoy

Or if you have any other recommendation please add to the list but I need to decide soon! Help!

TIA

Browns was lovely x

Madeintowerhamlets · 23/02/2022 22:41

Claridges is the best in my opinion but as PP said it may already be fully booked. Browns is very traditional with great service. The Wolseley is another favourite. You can’t go too far wrong with that list OP! Have a lovely time.

[quote Sodullincomparison]One Aldwych for me. I love the Savoy or Four Seasons for afternoon cocktails. Ritz is too noisy.

Me too afternoon tea and cocktails win too. I do feel that Aldwych one is a supper well kept secret for afternoon tea.

The Landmark, Marylebone. Absolutely stunning hotel.

Selok · 23/02/2022 23:28

Thank you so much all. Yes I agree the hat would be too much! I went for Claridges- unfortunately all booked up! Now booked at the Goring/ read fantastic reviews about it on the internet as well and some of the comments here too confirmed so went for it woohoooo CakeSmile

I've always fancied the Lanesborough (because back in the day their head chef had a good reputation for vegetarian food...he's long since moved on but that sense of "I must try the Lanesborough" still lingers)

Has anyone tried their afternoon tea?

Davros · 23/02/2022 23:37

The Wolseley is fine but it's not one of London's great rooms like some if the others

tinytemper66 · 23/02/2022 23:39

Grosvenor... expensive but we went this afternoon and they couldn't do enough for us. Offers of more cake/Sandwiches or tea/coffee. Lovely staff.

SocksAndTheCity · 23/02/2022 23:40

I would go for the Wolseley too, but if you wind up having afternoon tea somewhere else then you can go there for breakfast instead 😊

Hesma · 24/02/2022 06:26

The Athaeneum was amazing!

doadeer · 24/02/2022 06:38

Brown's and the Langham are lovely. I went very recently.
Sketch is really cool for modern

I have been to the Goring, and to Fortnum and Mason. 100% The Goring has the best atmosphere. Fortnum and Mason had (marginally) the best food. Fortnum and Mason is a bit large and impersonal. The Goring was small and unique, quirky and lovely.
sophiasnail · 24/02/2022 09:37

We always go to Fortnums on my birthday. Lovely afternoon tea followed by a spot of shopping in the food hall on our way out (only a small remortage of the house required to pay for it!). Us Yorkshire Yokels don't feel completely out of place, but we do put on our better togs for the occasion.

Tigersonvaseline · 24/02/2022 09:47

Fortnum and mason is set in one of the most enchanting and beautiful shops in London! It's a stunning venue and a pop into royal academy of art before is lovely too.

One aldwych , Charlie And chock factory was amazing!! The food...

Thischarmlessgirl · 24/02/2022 09:53

Claridges 100%
I go a few times a year and have never found anywhere better. Coworth Park near Ascot (part of the Dorchester hotel) is also lovely for outside of London

watcherintherye · 24/02/2022 10:02

Not tried it myself, but have heard the OXO tower on the South Bank (owned by Harvey Nichols) is wonderful for afternoon tea with a view!

Canhearthemice · 24/02/2022 10:14

Ive never bee to afternoon tea in London. When it says £70 for afternoon tea, would that be per person or for 2 people?

Canhearthemice · 24/02/2022 10:16

PS looked at a couple of the most recommended above and on neither menu does it say per person or for how many that might be for.

babybunny123 · 24/02/2022 10:17

Only been to the Ritz but it was something i will never forget, it was fantastic.

gingerhills · 24/02/2022 10:37

I don't like Claridges much. It's all a bit Made in Chelsea for me. I prefer the more trad places.

My favourite is The Connaught. Heaven.
Savoy is good too.
Or Fountain Rooom at Fortnums. (Upstairs, not ground floor cafe.) Best value is The Wolseley.

Surelyitscoffeetime · 24/02/2022 11:00

I’ve only been to the Ritz and it really felt like a tourist trap.

Lonecatwithkitten · 24/02/2022 15:40

Per person, but they are massive think bigger than 3 course meal I go without lunch and dinner if I have afternoon tea. There are often seconds of savoury items.
cyclamenqueen · 24/02/2022 16:10

Just a quick plus for the fashionista tea at The Berkeley, so pretty and lovely china. We also had a very good tea at The Shard . For Christmas tea you can't neat The Dorchester , they had a choir when we went and a pianist.

Londondreams1 · 24/02/2022 16:12

Harrods do a nice one
