Parents smoking weed?

buttercrinkle · 21/02/2022 08:57

I'm in a mum group on Facebook and a poll was posted about whether we smoke weed or not, I ticked no, but was in the minority!

Most of them said they do smoke it regularly, when their children are in bed. They said there's nothing wrong with it and it's similar to having a drink.

I just don't think I'd be able to be on the ball if there was an emergency or something similar. What if your child needed to go to a&e? Although I suppose some people don't drive. I'd feel the same about getting drunk with DS asleep upstairs.

Am I being an unreasonable prude?

I wake up much fresher the morning after a couple of joints than I do the morning after a couple of glasses of wine. It's a much more civilised and gentler intoxicant in my view.

SnowFlo · 21/02/2022 10:52

If my kids clothes stink of it, I'd have been reported by the school by now, or the non-smoking anti-weed grandparents I visit with her would have mentioned it to me. But no, everyone says, including school at parents evening, that she is always clean, dressed appropriately, presentable etc.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 21/02/2022 10:53

My DM vapes weed, she gets it from a friend who grows it. She's an absolute nightmare after having some, she's got osteoporosis and her thinking and reflexes are awful after vaping it to the point she's broken both hands and her wrist in the past few months after not paying attention to what she's doing and going over. Off it, she's absolutely fine.

@SaySomethingMan

Not sure which type of parenting group you’re in but there are many that weed smokers would be in the minority.
I'd say one where they think they're all cool and free spirits. They're obviously quite excited by their own daring to do a poll, rather than just cracking on with it as they would if it was just everyday life for them.
SnowFlo · 21/02/2022 10:56

It's not hard to tell the 'desperatly trying to recapture their youth' stoner parents on the school run nor their kids.

Are you imagining we go to school high and wearing hippie clothes?

I'm 26, I've smoked since my teens, I'm not recapturing my youth, this is just me. But then, I don't think "weed is for the youth" but somehow alcohol is an adult thing and perfectly fine, not recapturing your nightclub days when you have a drink in the evening are you? No

zxcvzxcvz · 21/02/2022 10:57

To me there's no difference between weed and alcohol (although I detest the smell of weed). I don't do either.

MaryMcCarthy · 21/02/2022 10:58

Yeah this idea that you can easily identify (or smell) a stoner isn't borne out by the reality. I know parents who smoke weed and if their kids went into school smelling of it they'd have been called in. But they never have. It's not like it's a taboo either. A child smelling of weed would be a safeguarding issue and would be reported.

People are generally very surprised when I tell them I smoke marijuana, because they don't have a clue. They say I'm "not the type".

Fact is there isn't a "type". There are weed smokers everywhere and in most cases you'll only know about it if they tell you.

Anniegetyourgun76 · 21/02/2022 11:01

I think drinking alcohol is worse tbh, weed doesn't incapacitate you like alcohol does. I mean I wouldn't want anyone who was under the influence looking after my kids obviously but if I HAD to choose I'd rather someone had a joint or two than a bottle of wine.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 21/02/2022 11:06

What an absolute load of judgmental bollocks!

You would literally never know the vast majority of people smoke it. Their kids don’t smell of it, they are in responsible jobs, they go about their normal lives and are often well respected with in their communities. It makes me laugh when people go on about being able to tell. It’s just shows how ignorant they are.

Blossomtoes · 21/02/2022 11:20

Having lived with an alcoholic, I know which I’d choose. Stoned people tend not to be aggressive or abusive.

Londondreams1 · 21/02/2022 11:24

It’s on par with having a drink, so yep for the same reason as when you drink, it’s harder to react in an emergency and best not to indulge whilst you are the primary carer of children.

VelvetChairGirl · 21/02/2022 12:07

I dont smoke it, never have. my friends hate it too, its brain rot and smoking it while the kids are in bed is disgusting they will be breathing it in and it affects young brains even worse.

find a different group.

theres a big difference, you dont get secondhand drinking.

also the number of drug drivers on the roads is far higher then drink drivers now, we had a long successful campaign teaching people not to drink and drive and now we have tonnes of drug taking idiots behind the wheel instead, got one who lives round here who literally sits in his car doing those little gas canisters with the balloons and then drives off at about just after 5pm......marvelous Angry

nanbread · 21/02/2022 13:26

Most people I know who smoke weed do it outside so second hand smoke isn't really an issue.

I do disagree with the people claiming you know what you're getting though.

I've smoked "weak" weed where I could smoke a few joijnts and be fine.

I've smoked other weed where after a few puffs I was laughing crazily.

And I've smoked some nasty skunk that made everyone moody and incapacitated and caused long term mental health issues in some of the people I smoked it with.

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 21/02/2022 13:32

I don’t like weed- the smell makes me boak so I don’t partake.

But. For most people I know it’s not much different to having a drink of an evening. That said, it’s a lot like alcohol in one sense- imo anyway- in that it can effect different people in different ways and it some people do become reliant on it. Then it’s a problem. Just like alcohol if you aren’t great on it then you shouldn’t use it, personal responsibility.

Of course I can. I've worked with hundreds of families where alcohol is the significant factor that is related to abuse and neglect of children and women. A bare handful where cannabis is related to the same extent of neglect and abuse

The problem is we won’t know if that’s because it’s illegal so harder to buy and not socially acceptable.
We have a strange relationship with booze in this country “is it wine o’clock” culture, it’s easy to slip into an issue without others noticing. We don’t have that with weed.
I’d argue “is it spliff o’clock” culture would result in equally as damaging results for kids with the added psychosis for fun.

incognitoforthisone · 21/02/2022 13:42

Their clothes, their kids clothes will stink of it. It's not hard to tell the 'desperatly trying to recapture their youth' stoner parents on the school run nor their kids. It's like potbellied 60 year old guys in sports cars. Got to look the other way and cringe.
My next-door neighbour smokes weed in his garden, alone, most days. He doesn't smell of it at all, and neither do his kids. He never seems stoned to any noticeable degree, either. Everything I've seen of him suggests that he is a good husband and dad, and in summer when they're in the garden a lot, it's really noticeable how much time he and his wife and kids spend together as a family - they play loads of games, do lots of craft activities, get the kids involved in helping with gardening and so on. Even their dog is well-behaved. They're basically a model family and the easiest neighbours ever!

Weed impacts you almost instantly though. If you take a draw and immediately feel quite stoned yo-you can stop. You can't do that with booze! It's also quite easy to tell from the texture and smell how potent weed is.
AlwaysLatte · 21/02/2022 13:43

I think taking drugs while your children are in the house is appalling. At the very least it sends a terrible message to them that it's ok.

I think it’s unusual

Notimeforaname · 21/02/2022 13:54

I hate drinking.
I'd never come home and open a bottle of wine in the evening but love sitting down with a joint.
No hangover, can walk and talk perfectly well.
No fear of being drunk and sending drunk texts or having 'the fear' the next day 😆

I dont have children but I know a number of people who do and smoke weed. All are well rounded, professional people.

Like alcohol, there are those who's lives it touches in a negative way. But for many it's just to relax and unwind.

BobMortimersPetOwl · 21/02/2022 13:55

I'm not a fan of drugs at all but I think having a smoke of an evening is really akin to having a glass of wine. People can and do smoke weed without being stoned in much the same way as people can and do drink alcohol without being drunk.

Londondreams1 · 21/02/2022 13:55

@CloseYourEyesAndSee

Agree that weed creates apathy, and alcohol creates aggression.
