Do you get jealous of people who go on cruises

Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

I have never, ever seen the appeal. The only one I would slightly consider is one along the Norwegian fjords, but even then I'd rather not.

Floating norovirus prisons.

AliceAbsolum · 21/02/2022 22:16

I've been on 2 and loved them. Saw Genoa, Pompeii, Nice, Piza, Rome, Tallinn, Copenhagen. Get off early and you get most of the day.
Food is 5 star, drinks on tap, endless lattes and cakes and ice cream.
Lovely to get dressed up if you want, if you don't then you eat elsewhere.
We did art lessons, yoga, swimming, spa days. Out on the deck is wonderful to watch the world.
Gym treadmills over the ocean.
New place everyday.
We made it to Russia and sat in the hot tub looking over St Petersburg.

Sorry OP but you should be jealous! They're amazing.

SeasonFinale · 21/02/2022 22:20

Personally can't think of anything worse but each to their own.

buddylicious · 21/02/2022 22:33

Serious question ...

Am I right in thinking that you have to share a dinner table with others (the same people every night)?

What if you don't get on with them?

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 21/02/2022 22:35

Norovirus!!

Urgh.

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 21/02/2022 22:36

@Billybagpuss

Can’t think of anything worse, and environmentally destructive.

1 day on a cruise ship has the same environmental impact as 1 million cars your carbon footprint trebles in size.

Is that right?! I had no idea. Link??
Mother87 · 21/02/2022 22:47

Windbeneathmybingowings
Looking out at the infinite blackness of sea merging in to sky at night.
Prescribed fun.
Got to be back on board at x time or they sail without you, who needs pressure like that on holiday.
The tips.
Everyone dressed up all the time, so exhausting.
Sea sickness.
Same shit every day.
Pirates.
Whirlpools.
And finally The Kraken.

Felt EXACTLY the same till DH persuaded me to try one... NO dressing up whatsoever, as I don't do formal/fussy. I was "me" every night in a different fabulous restaurant every or just room service / NO "prescribed"
fun whatsoever as I don't "do" entertainment / explored a few different places I never would have seen, with plenty of wandering time - and "infinite blackness" was the same as staying near the sea somewhere where it's all pretty dark in one direction...

Mother87 · 21/02/2022 22:49

And the good things? Plenty of choice for restaurants/cinema - big enough ship to wander somewhere all the time. Very serene whererever I went... Never sat with anyone else or mingled... was LOVELY

Cruise ships are destroying Venice. The 3xcess water pushed through the canal system when the massive ships come in is causing Venice's beautiful buildings to basically waste away. There is a really good documentary on it. Many homes and buildings first floors are unusable as they flood frequently and are unsafe.
Draining a canal and fixing the buildings will cost a ridiculous amount of money, but tourism is Venice main source of income so what is there to do?

I don’t think they are allowed in the lagoon any more, only in the port area.

No.
CounsellorTroi · 21/02/2022 23:28

@milkyaqua

You really need to watch the original 70s movie, The Poseidon Adventure.
One of my favourite films. Grin
CounsellorTroi · 21/02/2022 23:29

@PinkPiranha11

Urgh you’d have to pay me to go on a cruise. Someone I know on FB is always on them and they have these awful tacky professional photos done before dinner. In one she had elbow length white gloves on and the baby was wearing a mini tuxedo 🙈🤣
Not all cruises are that naff. Why can’t people grasp that there is a big variety out there?
ouch321 · 21/02/2022 23:43

So much ignorance on this thread and worse still how abundantly proud some/most posters are of their ignorance/stupidity and their attempts to be as insulting as possible.

There really ought to be a section on Mumsnet, like Classics, where they put threads where posters compete to say the most ridiculous/extreme things. This is one of the best examples I've seen in a while.

From a NON cruiser.

EpicGem · 21/02/2022 23:52

@CounsellorTroi I think the problem is that the more "naff" ones are the ones that advertise the most on TV. P&O seem to be the worst offender in that department. Their ads do make it look how people think cruising is. And once you've got that stereotype in your mind, why would you want to discover whether it's true or not?
If all I knew about cruising came from P&O adverts, I'd have never booked my first one.

Furries · 22/02/2022 02:33

I can access swimming pools, restaurants, cinemas and live music within a 5 mile radius of my home. I’m not up for paying out to do the same with a bunch of random people I can’t escape from for 10+ days!

When I go on holiday (not often, for various reasons), I choose a destination because I want to experience that destination. Not disembark for 8 hours and then bugger off to the next stop down the line.

Weirdly, the only time I’ve even thought about a holiday on a boat would be to do something like a narrow boat tour round the UK. Less people and get to see how beautiful our country is because I haven’t explored it enough.

Libertybear80 · 22/02/2022 02:35

Definitely not. They really do not appeal to me one bit.

Turningacornernow · 22/02/2022 08:50

This is a fairly accurate account of a modern cruise, from blogger on ship right now. It’s on MSC on a big ship, family friendly, mid market. International crowd and kids sail free.

boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2830872-cruise-critic-heading-out-on-seashore-on-219-what-do-you-want-to-know/

Turningacornernow · 22/02/2022 08:51

Not accurate, I meant typical account.... P&O really is an outlier in terms of cruise experience. MSC is a more typical experience of modern cruising

UnUdderOne · 22/02/2022 08:52

Urgh, I'd rather stay at home.

vivainsomnia · 22/02/2022 08:57

Am I right in thinking that you have to share a dinner table with others (the same people every night)
Of course not, at least not on any of the cruises I've been on. They do what you ask. A bit table, a small table, by a window, by the door. You decide. I would never want to eat with strangers.

This thread is a tally really good. It shows how ignorant people are about cruises. Almost all the reasons cited are not relevant.

This is fine though, there are enough people cruising already and living it, we don't need anymore to make prices go up.!

DetMcNulty · 22/02/2022 10:00

Equally, those who love their cruises seem blindingly ignorant to the costs to the environment and sealife, particularly endangered whale populations.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 22/02/2022 10:05

Some posters sound very invested in persuading everyone that cruises aren't naff or tacky. Naff is in the eye of the beholder I suppose...have to say that those photos of "entertainment" on the cruise critic link would not be to my taste but whatever.

CounsellorTroi · 22/02/2022 10:12

@DetMcNulty did you read my reply to your earlier post?
DetMcNulty · 22/02/2022 10:22

Yes, and thought it was a lot of whataboutery. Why add to something we know is a problem ( global supply chains) with a wholly unnecessary industry. I don't love in uk, we don't tend to import out of season food, and I try to avoid imported goods, but there's a limit what one can do as a consumer, going on a cruise is hardly a necessity.

Planes are bad too, but not on same scale per km and I'm all for reducing air travel too.
