Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

The thought of Jane McDonald crooning every night while guests eat their dinner would put many off

The impact on environment, and the impact on whales is enough to put me off completely. It's gross what happens to whales, they're backs can be broken and they die a horrible death and the industry us having a really negative impact on endangered whale populations. Honestly think it needs a rethink.

ThackeryBinks · 21/02/2022 10:11

No!

NowEvenBetter · 21/02/2022 10:27

Why are so many people asking ‘but how do you know if you’ve never been?’ are you of low intellect?
Same reason I know I’d hate to be a parent, or hate to jump out of a plane. Obviously because I’ve considered it and find the idea repellent.

Environmental terrorism, too. No justification for it.

buddylicious · 21/02/2022 10:30

@Furries

Big fat no from me! Basically cooped up with a load of people I don’t know, organised mealtime’s, forced entertainment and no way to leave. Sounds like hell on earth (water).

This!!!!

SusieQ5604 · 21/02/2022 11:37

I felt TRAPPED on a floating (not very good) hotel.

@Windbeneathmybingowings

No absolutely not.

Looking out at the infinite blackness of sea merging in to sky at night.
Prescribed fun.
Got to be back on board at x time or they sail without you, who needs pressure like that on holiday.
The tips.
Everyone dressed up all the time, so exhausting.
Sea sickness.
Same shit every day.
Pirates.
Whirlpools.
And finally The Kraken.

Belly laugh at pirates, whirlpools, and the Kraken.

Agree it needs to be addressed, but it’s because of shipping generally, including cargo, tankers, bulk carriers and ferries. Bit unfair to single out cruise ships. Aircraft kill thousands of birds too.
CounsellorTroi · 21/02/2022 11:49

Meant to add there is no way of travelling anywhere wirhout environmental impact. Do you never travel anywhere, even in a car?

milkyaqua · 21/02/2022 11:57

The horror, the horror.

Sportslady44 · 21/02/2022 14:27

some are powered by natural gas today (the ships)

I’d hate to only visit somewhere for a few hours, what’s the point. All that time stuck on a boat for hours or days, how very dull and I absolutely hate ‘entertainment’.

Saying that when I am older I might fancy a river cruise as I imagine you could sit and watch the view go by at least.

SartresSoul · 21/02/2022 15:49

Honestly couldn’t think of anything worse. It’s like butlins on a boat.

Rivermonsters · 21/02/2022 15:59

My worst fear. Id rather kill myself than go on a cruise

CrimbleCrumble1 · 21/02/2022 16:04

My worst fear. Id rather kill myself than go on a cruise gosh that’s very drastic.

Rivermonsters · 21/02/2022 16:17

@CrimbleCrumble1 no I’m just deathly afraid of norovirus Blush

EdithRea · 21/02/2022 16:36

I have never once even thought about people on cruises.

I might get jealous of people who go on real holidays, but if I wanted to stay in a windowless room and then hang out with people without personalities, I'd sleep in my bathroom then have dinner with my parents.

lightisnotwhite · 21/02/2022 17:22

@gingerhills

I can't bear the idea of having no autonomy on holiday. I like to find tiny local restaurants, spend ages at historic sites, not take a pic and jump back on a coach. I want to spend time with my family or local people or visit friends abroad, not mingle with forced jollity while some crew put on cheesy dance shows and sing cover versions of show songs I hated in the first place.

I probably would go on a very short cruise if it was free, but just so I could store up anecdotes of how grim it was to share with the family.

Why do you think you have to do that on a cruise? Livorno is the the port for seeing Pisa. Couldn’t be bothered. Took my 3 year old son son to a barbers where it was all Italian men. He made friends with a Italian kid in there and swapped the plastic collectibles of the time.. We had a lovely lunch in a non touristy restaurant and shopped in the local market like the locals. Yes we got back on the boat had buffet dinner which meant my son could chose whatever he liked and went back to the room for his bedtime, where I could sit on my balcony with a glass of wine and watch the med drift past twinkling under starlight. What’s not to like about that?
CounsellorTroi · 21/02/2022 17:29

I don’t get why so many people think that if they go on a cruise they will be forced to do things they don’t want to!

Fizbosshoes · 21/02/2022 17:57

While I don't think I would like a cruise for the reasons given in my previous post I wouldn't make any assumptions on, or insult those who do. I know a few different people who enjoyed cruises, and they liked different things and went for different reasons. I think its fine to say I don't think its a holiday I would enjoy without stereotyping or being snobby about the type of people who do go.

When we went to Livorno, we took a taxi to Pisa and did the necessaries there. We had the taxi wait for us, so he took us back to Livorno, and I think we arrived around 11.30am, just in time to track down a lovely traditional Italian restaurant.

We then pottered around the market at a very leisurely pace and the girls loved the low prices of hair accessories, etc.

The taxi was great as it meant we have 30 minutes free Wifi each way - plenty of time to get caught up. We also could leave the ship as soon as it docked rather than waiting for the tour to leave a couple of hours later.

There was a similar arrangement for Pompeii. We queued up for tickets (and I got a teacher rate). I'm glad we went independent as I wouldn't have wanted to spend more than a couple of hours in Pompeii - the place is huge and it all becomes a bit repetitive (sorry, not a classicist). I was also happy that my DDs got to take a train and learn that not all countries are the same as South West Railways. We loved having extra time to potter about in Sorrento (and drink Limoncello).
