Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

All these people saying they wouldn’t go on a cruise even if it was free or they were paid to - are you really that closed minded? What would you have to lose? I don’t fancy a skiing holiday but would consider giving it a go if it was free.

catfunk · 20/02/2022 11:38

I'd rather not go on holiday than go on a cruise.
In fact DB won one last year (to an incredible area) and he gave it to another family member (I also turned it down from him) we both said we'd rather fly there one day.

Sofiegiraffe · 20/02/2022 11:41

@CounsellorTroi

I wouldn't go on a cruise for free. I'm not closed minded, very far from it. What I am, however, is highly anxious about being on the sea to begin with, and would struggle even on a short ferry crossing for example. The idea of being on the sea for days at a time and unable to get off onto land fills me with dread. It's not my idea of a holiday to be highly anxious the whole time. Nothing to do with being closed minded. We all enjoy and dislike different things.

Me too. Because if I didn't enjoy it and it made me anxious, I could change my mind, remove my skis and say no thanks. I can't change my mind on a cruise and get off, can I.

Well that’s fair enough. I was thinking more of the people who think it’s naff and tacky and Butlins on Sea.

Gwlondon · 20/02/2022 11:45

Oh don’t be jealous. It’s a certain type of holiday.

Room very small. Very small shower. Costs more to have a balcony. Hand gel when you arrive and before you eat. So you are reminded that you are trying not to all get a stomach bug.

You see countries but for such a short amount of time that you don’t feel like you know the country. You don’t get to experience the cultural properly. It’s like spending two hours in London. You might like it but you haven’t had enough time.

If you don’t enjoy the entertainment you have to occupy yourself. It’s not like west end level. It’s good but not great.

Lots of food but you have to try not to gain weight as you won’t fit into your clothes. Hard to exercise properly.

The good things - you can have a multi generational holiday. Sometimes the sea is very beautiful. Some countries are so lovely and interesting that you know you want to go back.

Overall I don’t think it is worth it. I think it’s better to have a normal holiday. But I am not a holiday person and don’t go often. I think they will try and keep you safe. I felt like there is no culture but I can’t fully explain what I mean.

CatJumperTwat · 20/02/2022 11:46

CounsellorTroi I don't think you understand what closed minded means. I don't need to eat glass to find out if I'd like it or not.

Imnotafemistbut · 20/02/2022 11:46

Goodness no. I couldn't imagine anything worse than being stuck on a floating hotel, surrounded by annoying people, tacky cabaret as entertainment and loads of screaming kids running around and so on.....

mizzo · 20/02/2022 11:47

I think it would be a waste of money for me as I'm not interested in much of what is offered.

We did look at booking one once as PIL said it was an amazing deal but when we looked it was a tiny cabin with no windows for four of us with two single beds and two pull down beds above them I couldn't have spent an hour in it never mind 14 nights.

Girlmumdogmumboymum · 20/02/2022 11:49

Couldn't pay me to go on a cruise so no, I'd not feel jealous, envious or anything of the sort.

hellcatspangle · 20/02/2022 11:52

@UnsuitableHat

Never been on one (can’t afford one either!) but they don’t appeal. Scurrying off and on a boat to see a port town wouldn’t do much for me. That said, everyone I know who’s been on a cruise has loved it.
You don't just look around the port town...you plan in advance and get a cab/train/tour to the place of interest you're there to visit. It's a great way of seeing lots of places and thinking "I'll come back here for a few days".

The fact that everyone you know who's been on one loved it surely tells you something?

Aren't you the poster who said you wouldn't go on a P&O cruise? Would you go on one for free? If not why not?
CounsellorTroi · 20/02/2022 11:55

I probably would yes. If I wasn’t paying.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/02/2022 11:58

I worked on cruise ships for about 6 years. Royal Caribbean, P&O and Disney.

I'd love to go on a cruise as a guest...but only if I could go to the crew bar in the evening

zingally · 20/02/2022 12:03

I'm going for my first cruise in mid-May. 7 nights round France and Spain. I'm looking forward to it!

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 20/02/2022 12:11

I'd rather set fire to my hair than go on a cruise, so no.

Chewbecca · 20/02/2022 12:11

I wouldn’t pay to go on a P&O cruise but I still would go on it if it were free.

TicTacHoh · 20/02/2022 12:12

No, actively avoid them as find they usually love to bore the pants off you regaling their cruise tales when they get back.

It isn't closed minded at all.

What I'd have to lose is my time - that I can never get back, doing something I would rather avoid. Why are you so keen - it's a cruise, not the Moonies isn't it? Keep it for yourself if you love it.

CounsellorTroi · 20/02/2022 12:16

It’s just that so many people on here have formed an opinion on something they have never done based on myths, misconceptions and snobbery. But you’re right, no skin off my nose.

OhWhyNot · 20/02/2022 12:18

Absolutely not

Hotels with clubs in are bad are bad enough but at least you can escape

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/02/2022 12:21

There are some amazing aspects of cruising, the travel is a huge bonus.

As I say I worked on ships so never got the experience of a passenger, but I've been to places and seen things that I wouldn't have the opportunity to otherwise.
In the space of 2 months I'd been to Pompeii, Rome, Barcelona, Paris, Fiji, Vanuatu, the new Zealand fjords, Brisbane etc.

Sofiegiraffe · 20/02/2022 12:22

@CounsellorTroi

It’s just that so many people on here have formed an opinion on something they have never done based on myths, misconceptions and snobbery. But you’re right, no skin off my nose.

And also based on an understanding of their own likes and dislikes including things that make them anxious, in my case.
