Feeling very envious today. Friend is about to set off on a cruise for 14nights.

Cant stop thinking about it and them.

Can you put me off please?

Tell me some downsides of cruises.

I can’t think of anything worse than a cruise. Genuinely. The cooped up constant people aspect of it really makes me twitchy!

BobMortimersPetOwl · 19/02/2022 22:57

Christ, no! Being stuck on a boat with so many people is absolutely not my idea of a lovely time.

Butlins on a boat.

They are basically a floating old peoples home and most have a mortuary as no doubt someone will keel over!

mjf981 · 19/02/2022 23:11

My friend got on a ship in Fremantle, bound for Southampton (with various exotic stops, trip of a lifetime), just before covid kicked off. They ended up not being able to get off the ship until docking in Southampton (they were re-supplied from tugboats while docked at ports offshore)....something like 3 months later. It was a small ship. He was so incredibly bored!!!

mjf981 · 19/02/2022 23:13

The other thing I know about cruise ships if they have a freezer for the people who die while onboard (very common as a lot of older people go crusing). The last cruise a colleague of mine went on had 16 deaths in 2 weeks - the first one before they managed to get out of port in Sydney harbour. It was a massive ship of 2000+ people but still...Shock

This is just such crap.
fussychica · 19/02/2022 23:19

Totally unappealing to me, floating petrie dishes. Sea sickness, can't get away from awful people, if you don't suffer from sea sickness too much food to make you fatGrin
Saying that, as a child I always wanted my aunt to take me on a cruise with her and was always disappointed that she never did Confused

Appalonia · 19/02/2022 23:22

Actually as a single woman, I quite fancy a cruise, especially this one which provides 'gentlemen hosts'...Grin

Cognoscenti · 19/02/2022 23:24

We could go on a cruise, but they sound absolutely dire, so we never would. It just sounds awful, being on the ship most of the time and having set amounts of time at each stop. I don't think I'll even want to go on one in my old age, I genuinely think I'd be bored and feel too cooped up.

RaininSummer · 19/02/2022 23:24

Never fancied a cruise but have it as a potential suicide plan if I get old, pain riddled or terminal. Will save the hassle of a funeral too.

SolidGoldBrassiere · 19/02/2022 23:26

@SirGawain

There is so much crap be written on this tread it doesn't sound like any of you have actually been on a cruise. Many people, including me, love them. Whilst they are not cheap they are great value and certainly beat a fortnight in a grotty hotel in the Costa Del Muckhole.
PMSL. Love the idea that a cruise is the opposite of a grotty hotel in the Costa del Muckhole, as I'd have put them both in exactly the same 'unspeakably shit non-holiday' bracket'.

I like civilised city breaks.

saraclara · 19/02/2022 23:45

Also you only get to experience the places you visit when they're packed. With all the people on your mega liner, and those on the others in port.

I spent a few days in Dubrovnik a few years ago. The only way to cope with it was to go into town early in the morning before the cruise ships disembarked, and after 6 or 7pm, when all the passengers had been corraled and locked up again.
For the rest of the day we got out of Dodge.

Helpfully the port authority there issues a weekly chart to let people know whether each day is a green amber or red day. The chart shows how many/which ships are in port each day, and how many passengers each has. So we planned our time there accordingly.

I'd have an entirely different picture of the old town if I'd only seen it on a cruise excursion. But it's glorious before the cruise passengers all pour out, and after they've gone.

pollyglot · 20/02/2022 00:52

Trouble is, Dubrovnik is nothing like it used to be, before it was destroyed and rebuilt. It's lost its genuine antiquity...why not just look at a picture of it? Same with the bridge at Mostar, and lots of other places.

Strictlyfanoftenyears · 20/02/2022 00:56

@Windstartingup

Benmac

If you spent the week inside watching West End shows why didn't you - you know just stay in London for a week and watch West End shows Confused

Have you seen the price of west end shows? We managed to go for a week last year, you get a 5 star hotel with 5 star food ( top level hygiene). Service like you never see in the uk, beautiful balcony cabin where you wake up with a sea view. Just amazing and such good value.
Allthestarsabovemyhead · 20/02/2022 01:01

@Sportslady44

There are different types of cruises. Some are amazing and have water slides on them. Some aren’t so fancy. I went on one a few years ago. I didn’t enjoy it at all. But it was a cheaper Cruise and it had mostly working class people. I’ve seen cruises that go to the Caribbean that are amazing and so fancy on the inside so it just depends on what cruise line you go on. I actually never told my friends I was going on a cruise because I knew they’d be jealous. But in reality it wasn’t very good. The food was mediocre , you don’t get enough time in each country, sea sickness etc.

WeasilyPleased · 20/02/2022 01:05

No I don't. Seasickness and being stuck with loads of people I don't know. Yuk.

Nowhere's like it used to be. But that's no reason to stay at home and look at pictures instead.

Jeeze, that's such a sad way to think. I'm in my 60s, so the places I visited in my 20s are nothing like they used to be. And as an avid and independent long haul backpacker, I'm supposed to be primed to whinge about those changes. But I've been back to some of them as they are now and enjoyed them in an entirely different way.

I'm not convinced that many PP have been on a cruise.

A good cruise is wonderful.

Annoymouser2 · 20/02/2022 01:39

Wouldnt be jealous but hear the Norwegian cruises are nice and smaller ships so not overcrowded. The downside of cruises are seasickness and bad weather, always someone with money looking down on you, seating plans of sharing tables with others, so have to chat with others rather than intimate chatting with people you are there with. Having to be dressed up to attend certain things on the boat. Overpriced things like bottled water. The list is endless its expensive and you could go on 3 cheap holidays in spain with whole family for the price of a cruise in the cheapest cabin per person

RobertSmithsLipstick · 20/02/2022 01:51

I would hate all that dressing up shyte as well.

haikyew · 20/02/2022 01:56

Lots of seedy stuff
Happens while on a cruise ship
Don't envy your mate
