To not pay £480 to fix dd's friend's phone

FarangGirl · 19/02/2022 14:17

Dd (14 yo) was with her friends and accidentally hit a friend in the arm. He had his phone in his hand and dropped it. Apparently it will cost £480 to repair!!! His parents want us to pay this. I think this is ridiculous. First, friend dropped the phoen, it wasn't like dd was using it. Second. If you're going to give your kid a stupidly expensive phoen, you should insure it and have a bullet proof cover.

HNRTT but regarding @turkey98 assertion of assault, I suppose it might depend on jurisdiction, if there is a jurisdiction where accidentally hitting someone on the arm constitutes assault, presumably where @Turkey98 lives. In the UK, assault depends on intent.

Mollymoostoo · 20/02/2022 19:55

@itsgettingweird

What would they have done if someone in the street knocked him arm and he dropped it?

These things are a general risk of real life if you carry expensive items (or even cheap ones!)

Exactly. I suspect he has blamed your daughter to get off accepting responsibility.
Personally I would offer to get it repaired and get a quote done. I am guessing g the cost they are suggesting is from apple, there is no way a phone screen costs that much.
QuizzlyBear · 20/02/2022 20:03

When I was 14 I was in drama class with a friend and we were learning stage fighting. Unfortunately my ring smashed the face of her watch when I went to 'punch' and she went to block.

Her parents wanted us to buy her a new (very expensive) watch and got really shirty about it. They based this on the fact that all jewellery was supposed to have been removed before the class.

They only stopped harassing me for the money when my dad pointed out that if I should have removed the ring, their daughter should also have removed her watch...

A real shame but our friendship never really recovered.

RachaelN · 20/02/2022 20:05

Not a chance. They should have it insured.

Cameleongirl · 20/02/2022 20:09

I agree that if you buy your teen an expensive phone, you should be prepared for accidents, i.e., get insurance! It's really not your DD's fault that her friend didn't have it insured nor had a cover on it. My DD (now 16) broke her phone twice when she was in her early teens, once she dropped it herself and the second time she was with friends and said someone jogged her arm....she also hadn't put the cover on, even though we'd bought her one.

Insurance covered the first breakage, but the second time we said she'd need to go on a monthly payment plan if she wanted a new phone. She paid for a few months and then we paid it off for her when she'd shown she was being more responsible with her phone.

So, I agree with PP's who said that perhaps asking for £100 would have been reasonable, but it's not your DD's fault that the phone didn't have a cover and wasn't insured.

Londoncallingme · 20/02/2022 20:13

@Itsalmostanaccessory

Well, she shouldn't be waving her arms around. That is silly.

Pay half.

Oh nonsense! There’s absolutely nothing she did wrong! Of course she can use her arms to express herself! Lots of people do. Maybe he was holding his phone very gently. My sons friend ran backwards across my sons room and knocked his Mac over, smashing the screen - it was an accident. I didn’t even tell his parents, let alone ask for money!
Jem57 · 20/02/2022 20:18

iPhone screen to be replaced in Liverpool is £60 in almost every independent repairer,if they want it fixed at an Apple shop well that’s their problem.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

BellaVida101 · 20/02/2022 20:26

Yes, sorry I meant AppleCare. But they should have put AppleCare on a phone being given to a 14 year old

ChestnutChomper · 20/02/2022 20:32

Some of these responses are totally ridiculous. OP's DD did nothing wrong at all. Even if she had been being silly and waving her arms around, kids do that and should be able to do that without fear of a £480 bill if they accidentally knock into their friend! It's nobody's fault and if the boy's parents want to give him such an expensive phone, knowing he will take it out and about, they need to be prepared for potential accidents. Neither you nor your DD should be paying a penny towards the repair of this phone.

DJ81 · 20/02/2022 20:38

OMG, you are not being unreasonable at all. If the phone was so hugely expensive then the parents should have got the phone insured separately, and possible have hired minders to protect the phone and the child.
Good grief, £480, they shouldn’t worry about mending it for that they can get a brand new phone for less than that and have change for the minders🤪.
Stand your ground, no one would pay out for this, perhaps your dad friends parents should try and claim on their home contents insurance.
Good luck and do not give in. Xx

Bangolads · 20/02/2022 21:00

Honestly I can’t stop laughing at the responses that berate her for moving her arms. It’s normal to express yourself by moving your arms. Obviously it’s not her fault. An offer of £50 and a recommendation to get the phone insured.

Meinmytree · 20/02/2022 21:26

You could get three of my phone brand new for that price, plus the covers to protect it. Works perfectly fine as a phone, and everything else phones are expected to do now

Frazzledstar1 · 20/02/2022 21:31

Sounds excessive for a phone repair, I have any iPhone and cracked screen repair was way less. Can’t imagine that it being knocked out of his hand would cause much more damage than that.

DobbleBobble · 20/02/2022 21:37

If she'd knocked a can of pop out his hands by accident she should have immediately offered to replace it. 460 for a phone repair? I could buy myself three new phones for that with change! I drop my phone all the time thats why I won't even consider getting myself or my kids anything expensive, and we all have cases and screen protectors although they aren't infallible!

You've convinced me. Everyone should walk everywhere with their arms flat to their sides like a TV deodorant advert. Helpfully, no one will be able to use their mobiles so less risk of themt being deliberately damaged by someone foolishly using their hands.

Absolutely!

bultaoreune · 20/02/2022 23:41

FYI you can buy a good condition genuine second hand iphone 12 for that price. Apple charges £280 to repair screen out of warranty, which would be even less if you go to a high street shop to fix it. It would be cheaper to replace the phone. They are fleecing you. Even if you had to pay, it should be just the screen, not the other damage caused to the phone.

LoisLane66 · 21/02/2022 00:07

I find it incredible that so many of you (always assuming that MN is a cross section of global society) admit to breaking your phone multiple times, usually the screen. I wonder how many times you break your bed by jumping on it or break dishes and glassware at home when carrying them or break your reading glasses.
We're talking here about £100s if not £1000+ for a phone that you treat like a used cardboard coffee cup.
I have owned 48 mobile phones, bought either on contract or, more recently, bought outright, over the years since the first brick Motorola arrived. None of them has ever been stolen, screen damaged or broken in any other way and all, except my current Android (never an iPhone) are still compete with accessories charger etc in original boxes.
I do everything on my phone and it gets plenty of daily use but I see no need to drop it, throw it on the floor, bed or sofa, take it into the bathroom or use it while walking along pavements or crossing roads. Only morons do those kind of things and yes, one of my daughters is guilty of being a moron, ringing while loading the dishwasher, running water for a bath or in a busy shop. I end the call.

The OP said a while back that it wasn't just a cracked screen and there was other damage.
BellaVida101 · 21/02/2022 00:20

And that in itself is sus. The worst you’d get from a light jossle is a cracked screen. Those things are resilient (typing on one now and extensive apple experience).

Mfsf · 21/02/2022 00:37

So basically this people think if someone bumps it not you in the supermarket ( as a ie) and you drop your phone they should pay for it ? What universe are they living in?
You have nil responsibility to paying anything .

llizzie · 21/02/2022 00:44

What would Judge Judy say?
