To not pay £480 to fix dd's friend's phone

FarangGirl · 19/02/2022 14:17

Dd (14 yo) was with her friends and accidentally hit a friend in the arm. He had his phone in his hand and dropped it. Apparently it will cost £480 to repair!!! His parents want us to pay this. I think this is ridiculous. First, friend dropped the phoen, it wasn't like dd was using it. Second. If you're going to give your kid a stupidly expensive phoen, you should insure it and have a bullet proof cover.

Don't pay anything I wouldn't.

If she was holding it and dropped it, then yes her fault.

She wasn't, he dropped it. He should have had better hold of it. They should have insured it. You certainly shouldn't pay any random amount without knowing exactly what is wrong, what condition it was in previously and have a few quotes for repair costs to compare.

If in the same situation I wouldn't even have contacted the parents for recompense.

But even if SHE - the OP's daughter - was holding it (and dropped it,) the OP should not be responsible for paying for it. The child's parents need to claim on the insurance. That's what it's for FFS. No WAY would I pay for it if it was my child. No!

@Kteeb1

Phones just spontaneously leap out of her hand, poor lamb.

Oh god she sounds like me haha!

Yes definitely try. I am sure will be the solution to all your problems!

AskingforaBaskin · 19/02/2022 23:29

@Mrsmch123

She knocked it out his hand so she/you should pay at least half of the repair bill.
Says who? Where is that written? It's his phone. He dropped it and it clearly wasn't adequately protected. Sounds like a gin problem.
Tumbleweed101 · 19/02/2022 23:55

There is no way I could afford to pay for an accident like this. My children don't have expensive phones because I can't afford to get them one, I certainly couldn't be paying for an accident on someone else's. Insurance is there to cover high costs such as this for accidents. I might go halves on insurance excess at a push but not willingly. I don't think children should have expensive items at school because accidents do happen.

There's no phone model where the screen coats £480 to repair at Apple. Apple are open about the cost and it's on their website. support.apple.com/en-gb/iphone/repair/service/screen-replacement Also, a 2 yr Apple insurance plan costs £240. They should've bought one of those. They're having a laugh.

If you read all of the OP's posts they state its something else as well as the screen. Also though the costs stated are in pounds, I don't believe the OP is in the UK.

If you buy an apple product then you get apple care, otherwise you are a plain dumbass.
If they have the money for an expensive phone then they have the money to insure it.

Do NOT pay towards this. They are pisstakers.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 20/02/2022 12:10

To add my daughter did exactly this with me. I sent my phone off the next day, with the printed label from the website. I had a new phone about 3/4 days later-delivered by courier. Extra expense zero.

They are CFers

StormBaby · 20/02/2022 12:13

No way would I pay. My children’s phones all together wouldn’t even cost that much!

Rainbowsparkle · 20/02/2022 17:32

£480? My son dropped his phone and smashed screen and apple repaired it. Definitely wasn’t £480 they are taking liberties!

Queenbee77 · 20/02/2022 17:38

Mobile should have been insured. Dont pay it! Have they no sense? Aleays insure items like that as accidents happen.

CheesePlantMurderer · 20/02/2022 17:39

Fuck that shit. Should be insured.

2DogsOnMySofa · 20/02/2022 17:39

It was an accident, end of. No one at fault, but as the boy is the owner of the phone he has responsibility for looking after it. His parents or he should pay for it.

Slightlylostalongtheway · 20/02/2022 17:42

I talk using my hands...ridiculous people saying you shouldn't be moving arms whilst talking. What are you, robots? No you shouldn't be paying. I would maybe offer something or ask to take it somewhere to get a quote but having 4 kiddos and they have all had broken phones it is their responsibility not their friends

Zippy7 · 20/02/2022 17:45

Did DD see it 100% working before and the damage/problem after? What phone is it? Sounds like they're buying a new phone! Ask for a copy of the three (at least) quotes they got - check quotes with the people they got them off, get your own quotes. Look how much the same phone is new & refurbished.

GabriellaMontez · 20/02/2022 17:46

A teen walking along outside with a thousand pound in his hand.

Already ridiculous. But to not have it insured and in a bombproof case. Then try to shift the responsibility to someone else when it's inevitably damaged. They can gtf.

Repecka · 20/02/2022 17:47

Nope, YANBU.

I’d ask to see a copy of the repair bill…and I might make a contribution.

But, no way would I be paying such a ridiculous amount of money for a repair.

PeaceToEveryOne · 20/02/2022 17:47

I think, as it was an accident, I think you should pay half, perhaps ring around and see if you can get it fixed cheaper.
It was probably a present, which is his parents, choice, to get him something nice. Don't put the onis on him and his parents, it wasn't their fault.

christingle2 · 20/02/2022 17:47

I think ultimately he dropped his own phone. She may have nudged him accidentally but I don’t really think the damage is on her. If she was using the phone and dropped it or purposely hit him, then fair enough. But this wasn’t the case; he could have saved his phone from going flying. Every iPhone user knows the risk of going caseless whilst your phone new too.

However I could see this being the end of their friendship if you don’t offer something. I guess you’ll have to think how much is the friend worth to her

welshbaby2009 · 20/02/2022 17:50

Agree with this. She was talking using her arms, we all doing it. They are teens.

christingle2 · 20/02/2022 17:51

To be honest the price is probably accurate for a recent iPhone. There’s a charge for a screen repair and a higher charge for a replacement device which it seems like this quote is (op mentions another issue aside from the screen.)

The same phone likely costs more new and refurbished in Italy.

With apple, there’s risks when going to a 3rd party to replace the device as they sort of ring fence repairs

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 20/02/2022 17:56

I’d only pay the insurance excess

janj2301 · 20/02/2022 17:57

My contents insurance covered my phone when I dropped it and it was damaged beyond repair

LoisLane66 · 20/02/2022 17:59

They should have household contents cover which will include items of value taken out of the home.
