To not pay £480 to fix dd's friend's phone

580 replies

FarangGirl · 19/02/2022 14:17

Dd (14 yo) was with her friends and accidentally hit a friend in the arm. He had his phone in his hand and dropped it. Apparently it will cost £480 to repair!!! His parents want us to pay this. I think this is ridiculous. First, friend dropped the phoen, it wasn't like dd was using it. Second. If you're going to give your kid a stupidly expensive phoen, you should insure it and have a bullet proof cover.

Cost me £60 to fix a brand new iPhone 13 pro max, that's a £1k phone. What phone is this kid using?!

ChickenStripper · 19/02/2022 20:51

@Teeturtle phones are included as standard with certain companies eg my Direct insurance does.

LemonSwan · 19/02/2022 20:55

@Kteeb1

You need these... www.lifeproof.co.uk/

I throw my phone around all the time. Complete butter fingers! I must have thrown my phone on gravel, on the ground, slipped it out my hand and dashed it 3/4 metres. On a bad day I can drop it 5 times. I have dropped it in water. You name it!

Never fucked my phone. Don't even have a scratch on it (except the one time my case was 3 years old and due replacement - waterproof seals had gone and I dropped it in the toilet. But that was an iphone 6s - nowadays most have some waterproofing in the phone itself).

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/02/2022 20:56

Why so costly

Assume Screen is smashed

Should be about £100

Kteeb1 · 19/02/2022 21:02

@LemonSwan thankyou. We bought one for £30 which was meant to be smash proof but obvs wasn't. We will try this. Of course its never her fault! She's never messing around or anything. Phones just spontaneously leap out of her hand, poor lamb.

Workingclassvegan · 19/02/2022 21:05

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

Not a chance. It was an accident. Could have been a complete stranger that did it, what would they have done then.

Ridiculous.

If I had caused a stranger to damage their phone I would still think of myself as responsible.

I don’t understand how phone is so badly damaged after being dropped from not very high. I have dropped mine a ton of times and it’s fine.

Apple store is silly expensive, ask them to take it to a local place and see what the cost is then.

But ultimately you are responsible for your child. Pay up imo.

@UrsulaBursula

You wouldn’t walk into Harrods, try a top and rip it whist taking it off - then tell the cashier your not paying for it and claim it on their insurance would you?

Or go into John Lewis and crack an expensive mirror and blame them for having the mirror on show and tell them to pay for it?

Surely this is common sense. The nerve of some people

No I'd put the top back on the coathanger, pop it back onto the rails, and fuck off quickly. (Like 99% of people would.)

Also, this situation is not the same.

HTH.

BearOfEasttown · 19/02/2022 21:35

@Butchyrestingface

I'm inclined to think if his parents are rich and dopey enough to buy a 14 year old a £££ phone, and then take it to school with him, they're rich enough to either ensure it or suck up the cost of the repair themselves for accidental - and predictable - damage.

That said, I'd probably offer some kind of contribution.

This. ^ Like fuck would they get a single penny from me.
cuno · 19/02/2022 21:35

£480 is more than what my phone cost brand new! Shock

BearOfEasttown · 19/02/2022 21:41

@JuergenSchwarzwald

Half the time you buy them a case and they take it off because it doesn't look as cool cross post!
I agree with this. Every person under 30 I know has no case, and some of them have been through about 12 to 15 smartphones in 7-10 years. (Coz they bloody BREAK so easily!) My 2 DCs and their peers (early 20s to early 30s,) say phone cases are for 'old people.' (Rude!) Hmm

I have had a case on the first smartphone I had, for 3 years. DH has had his (with a case) for 4 years.)

Both my DC have had 7 smart phones between them in the 4 years my DH has had his. The cases are available to protect them. Why on EARTH do they not use them? Confused I'm just OLD (apparently!) so i don't know why they won't use them!

BearOfEasttown · 19/02/2022 21:47

@FarangGirl

I think you should say something like this...as a pp suggested earlier.

@gonnascreamsoon

If I were you OP, I'd be telling them...

''Accidents happen, and we'll be happy to pay for 50% of your insurance excess, once we see the relevant paperwork, as the cheapest way to get it fixed will be claiming on your insurance. However we're not going to be paying £480 if even the most basic of protection measures weren't taken to ensure such an expensive phone wasn't damaged in an accidental drop i.e a decently robust phone case etc''

If they are not insured however, I would not be looking at my own insurance. Just say 'well you will have to make a claim against us then - because we are not paying almost £500. See you in court...'

Greenbluestar · 19/02/2022 21:52

Whether they have insurance is irrelevant.
If she was round their house and dropped an expensive glass, wouldn’t you expect to pay for it? Or would you say ‘oh well, should have insurance’. Do the decent thing and offer to pay half at least.

No.

Greenbluestar · 19/02/2022 21:54

I don’t have insurance in my IPhone. I wouldn’t even consider this 😵‍💫

Greenbluestar · 19/02/2022 21:54

@BearOfEasttown

Why don’t you want to take responsibility for your kid?

Wouldlovetobeinthesun · 19/02/2022 22:04

I would suggest they get the phone mended and you will contribute once they've provided you with the receipt. My bet is they wouldn't spend that much on the repair themselves. Having looked into buying an Apple produce abroad, I can also tell you the warranties (if still in date) are valid worldwide.

If you can afford an expensive glass for guests. Acidental damage is a possibility and as the host your at your own perrol you can not expect your guests to replace a expensive glass YOU choose to serve them? Who does that.... moral to the story get a screen protector.

@Greenbluestar

If someone is dumb enough to place an 'expensive' glass in a place where it can get knocked over easily, and it gets broken by a CHILD, then that's their own stupid fault for not taking better care of their stuff!

Like bollocks would I pay for said 'expensive broken glass.' LOL, jog on!

If they refused to allow my children there again, RESULT! I would consider it a blessing! Couldn't be fucked with nobby people like that.

BearOfEasttown · 19/02/2022 22:20

@Piggyk2

Well yeah exactly! If a guest breaks something that YOU gave them or YOU left out in a place where it would get knocked, then claim on your insurance, like normal people FFS! Who the fuck DEMANDS someone pays for something they accidentally broke? Confused What the F is insurance for? Hmm

I can't imagine some people on this thread have many friends (if any at all!)

Hmm

The OP’s DD didn’t drop anything.

WorryWorty · 19/02/2022 22:27

Sorry meant to add:

The cheeky fuckwits son did.

Mrsmch123 · 19/02/2022 22:38

She knocked it out his hand so she/you should pay at least half of the repair bill.

Teaforme123 · 19/02/2022 22:44

No. I wouldn't pay. It was an accident. Their fault for giving such an expensive phone to a 14 yr old.

EllaB22 · 19/02/2022 22:46

Home insurance?
