To not pay £480 to fix dd's friend's phone

FarangGirl · 19/02/2022 14:17

Dd (14 yo) was with her friends and accidentally hit a friend in the arm. He had his phone in his hand and dropped it. Apparently it will cost £480 to repair!!! His parents want us to pay this. I think this is ridiculous. First, friend dropped the phoen, it wasn't like dd was using it. Second. If you're going to give your kid a stupidly expensive phoen, you should insure it and have a bullet proof cover.
Aibu?

@TyrannosaurusRegina

She was talking animatedly and knocked his arm.

She'll have been waving her arms about in an exaggerated manner being dramatic, as some teens do.

I'd pay half, but insist on getting my own quote. And whatever the price would be deducted from DD's pocket money.

She wasn't though. She kind of turned to him as they were walking and talking and that's how she hit his arm. She wasn't being silly. Both kids confirm this.

YABU, The phone would not be broken if your DD didn't knock it out of his hand. "Accident" doesn't mean "not responsible".

Expensive for sure, but it was her fault, you should pay.

QuinkWashable · 19/02/2022 17:12

If it's an iphone, Apple honours from most places (not one of the places I bought one, but that's the risk I took)

user6573 · 19/02/2022 17:13

I have an expensive phone l, I have young children with SEN and I am dyspraxic and it gets dropped multiple times a day. It is totally fine because it is in a military grade phone case. I only ever get very robust drop proof cases. My teenager has a cheap phone as she is also clumsy and she still has a very robust phone case. Phones that are adequately protected can survive a drop. If it was in a fashion case or worse, no case, it's tough shit. If it was insured it wouldn't cost that much to fix. No way would I pay.

Pinksweets · 19/02/2022 17:13

His parents are in the wrong for giving a stupidly expensive phone to a teen who will walk around with a phone in his hand. Why didn’t he have a protective case and screen protector? Why didn’t his parents pay for insurance?

cherrybonbons · 19/02/2022 17:14

It would cost me £417 to repair the screen on my iPad Pro. I know because I have home insurance and I looked on the apple website and had to prove it.
Parents should also have insurance on their sons phone. Also was there a screen protector on and a case. It's on them too. Not your daughter accidentally bumping someone. Ridiculous

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/02/2022 17:14

Gosh, that's not fair - the woman who stole £4.2 million worth of diamonds has only got to pay back £250!

Confused
QuinkWashable · 19/02/2022 17:14

Honestly though, I keep my own phone in a double layer case, let alone my kids!

If they smashed an iphone (also 400 damage? why not just buy another second hand) then they would be getting cheapy chinese androids for the foreseeable!

Why on earth it wasn't in a decent case is the question.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 19/02/2022 17:16

I have a teen with an iPhone 13… it’s insured! Those parents are nuts expecting you to pay.

Alrightqueenie · 19/02/2022 17:18

They're chancing their luck here, the bloody cf's because they want cash off you & they'll claim on the house insurance. No chance I'd pay, the scheming bastards.

BHX3000 · 19/02/2022 17:19

I was just getting off the train the other day whilst holding my phone in my hand (so wasn’t using it or ‘distracted’) when somebody in front of me suddenly stopped walking whilst moving his bag over his shoulder very fast, which hit my phone - it got knocked out of my hand as I couldn’t avoid running into the back of him.

I live in a country with very smooth train platform surfaces. My phone was in a case. The screen STILL got cracked in one corner. It was as protected as it should’ve been.

It’s an old iPhone so no longer under warranty, and I have way bigger things in my life to worry about right now so I let it go mentally. But I don’t think how it’s my fault that this man decided to clumsily get off a train which caused for my phone to break. Technically, I shouldn’t be the one paying for the damage.

On the other hand, when you have expensive tech you insure it, if you can’t afford a repair in the event of an accident. If this is a teenager, I also don’t see why he can’t be given a cheap iPhone instead, which will cost a lot less than the repair.

They’re lying about buying the phone abroad invalidating warranty. If it was bought in an Apple store, the warranty is valid worldwide. I’ve bought iPhones or MacBooks in many different countries and have been able to access Apple Care in others.

I too wouldn’t let anybody but Apple repair it. However, that’s my choice - an expensive one at that - so I definitely wouldn’t be asking someone else to foot the bill, even if they were at fault. Don’t let these parents fool you.

UrsulaBursula · 19/02/2022 17:20

Pay half.

If a pedestrian broke off your side mirror whilst walking too close to your car, would you expect them to pay or blame you for choosing to drive an expensive car? Then tell you to contact your insurance? I don’t think so

Pay half if not all, but don’t expect to not take ANY responsibility. Hmm

WomblingWilma · 19/02/2022 17:23

Totally on the friends’s parents for not ensuring the phone was in a decent case. My 11 year old has an iPhone 12 and as soon as it was out of the box, it was put into a super tough front and back connected case. Cost about £20. I knew it was an expensive phone so needed good protection. He’s dropped it numerous times and it hasn’t got a scratch on it.

Accidents happen, and should be expected with phones. Your DD wasn’t holding it and dropped it.

I think the parents have got a nerve even asking TBH and I wouldn’t have any truck with it. Lesson for them and their DS to have a case on it, not for you or your DD. Tell them to GTF and tell your DD that if her friend falls out with her over it, he wasn’t a friend.

UrsulaBursula · 19/02/2022 17:24

You wouldn’t walk into Harrods, try a top and rip it whist taking it off - then tell the cashier your not paying for it and claim it on their insurance would you?

Or go into John Lewis and crack an expensive mirror and blame them for having the mirror on show and tell them to pay for it?

Surely this is common sense. The nerve of some people

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 19/02/2022 17:24

Unless it was a total accident - like he turned around, she was close behind and accidentally jostled him - you should pay some. But the amount is outrageous. They should claim. And you should pay the deductible.

MangoLipstick · 19/02/2022 17:30

@AllThingsServeTheBeam

Not a chance. It was an accident. Could have been a complete stranger that did it, what would they have done then.

Ridiculous.

My thoughts exactly.

Can’t believe some posters are saying op should offer half Confused

It’s not like she took it out of his hands and threw it on the floor & yes, it should have been insured.

LightfoldEngines · 19/02/2022 17:30

What exactly needs fixing?

My MacBook recently needed a repair as I knocked a drink over it - that was £500.

So wtf on the phone needs fixing for almost the same price?!

Mumski45 · 19/02/2022 17:34

You can get a second hand iPhone 12 for £480 from Music magpie so why would you need to pay that much for a repair. I would not hand over a penny until you know exactly how much they actually pay and even then I would argue that it should at the most be 50:50.

trumpisagit · 19/02/2022 17:34

I wouldn't pay. The other child wasn't looking after his phone properly, and they are ridiculous to give a 4 y o a new iPhone and not insure it.
None of this is your problem.

StaplesCorner · 19/02/2022 17:35

So if we are going to say that the DD is at fault for existing in the same space, thereby meaning she must be responsible, surely he is equally as responsible for having a phone in his hand. As previous poster said, he should have had it in his pocket.

I mean there he was, walking and talking, with a phone?! Surely you could counter sue OP? I mean, that's just as ridiculous as your DD being somehow to blame Hmm

Getoff · 19/02/2022 17:37

I don't agree with people who think that responsibility can be disclaimed because costs should have been covered by insurance. Whether it's insured would affect the cash outlay to fix, but should make no difference to whether there is a payment towards outlay. If OP DD was partially or wholly responsible, she should pay part of the whole of the cost, to the extent she can. Regardless of OP DD culpability, OP herself should not pay anything, as she didn't break anything.

SaySomethingMan · 19/02/2022 17:38

Yabvu for not wanting to pay anything at all towards it.
It doesn’t matter what they decided to get their kid or what insurance they have or don’t have. Your dd broke their ds’s phone.
Teach your daughter some responsibility and pay your way.

UrsulaBursula · 19/02/2022 17:40

The LEAST you could do is offer to find somewhere that will fix the phone for less money et and come to a compromise paying half each.

But seriously, to expect NOT to take ANY responsibility!?! Cheeky F in my opinion.

Grrrrdarling · 19/02/2022 17:41

If the phone is that expensive it should have a protective case on & insurance! If DD had taken the phone off their friend & smashed it then yeah I’d say they should pay ti fix it but this was an accident not deliberate.
MadeForThis · 19/02/2022 17:44

A broken screen is not covered under the warranty. It's accidental damage.

Apple will put a genuine screen into the phone, an unauthorised repair shop will not. This voids the warranty. Although they don't have a uk warranty anyway.

It could be covered under their house or bank insurance.

It sounds like a genuine accident but I would offer to contribute something. Even with an impact protection case the screen can still crack when dropped.

Checking online with Apple the cost of an out of warranty screen repair is £266.44
