What do you love and hate about your bathroom

What would you change

OP posts:

Ours was an internal bathroom, so no window. We then discovered an original Victorian skylight that had been roofed over in the attic, above the bathroom. We reinstated the skylight and now it makes such a gorgeous lightwell in the middle of the house. We got a local artist to put in create a stained glass panel for the bathroom door so the light shines out and it just looks stunning!

Other smaller things I love about our bathroom.

  • Vanity with a lot of storage and a wide marble top so I can lay stuff out without anything falling off.
  • Niche in the shower wall to put the showergel / shampoo etc without having to have those annoying metal racks.
  • A water pump to give a really decent high pressure for the shower.
  • Shower with both a fixed overhead waterfall head, but also a "wand" head that you can move (no idea what this is called).
Wall lights! I hate harsh overhead light so nice warm wall lights make if feel lovely and spa-like
OohRahhMaki · 17/02/2022 21:18

Oh and what would I change?

I'd add a humidity sensing extractor fan instead of the one that just comes on when the lights are on. It means I end up turning the lights on during the day, even though it is bright enough, just for the extractor.

I wish I had a bit of extra space - I really want a bath in there, but it would have meant having a shower over the bath and I really didn't want to sacrifice that.

Iwanttenofthose · 17/02/2022 21:22

Bad ventilation so mould keeps growing on the ceiling

SusanSHelit · 17/02/2022 21:22

Ours is absolutely miniscule (approx 6ftx6ft) but only just been redone and is a wet room now.

Love my led mirror cabinet, my shower that goes wall to wall, my rainfall shower head and my marble panels. The floor is cushioned too so feels quite warm.

I also like how easy it is to clean because it is so tiny

Hairyfriend · 17/02/2022 21:24

Reading with interest as currently doing up the bathrooms.

Giggorata · 17/02/2022 21:24

Love that it is an ex bedroom, so quite big, my freestanding slipper bath, the Victorian handbasin, the dark yacht varnished floorboards and half panelling, with a shelf all the way round, not having the loo in the bathroom.

Hate the shower cubicle and planning a new one, the regulation safety bathroom light, the now tiny airing cupboard after putting a new hot water tank in.

Bideyinn · 17/02/2022 21:26

I love almost everything about my bathroom. It has a beautiful stained glass window, a wall hanging toilet, lovely double ended bath and a great shower. I like the towel rail and the floor and it hasn’t dated since we put it in nearly 20 years ago. But it is small and that will never change. A bit bigger would be nice.

somewhereovertherain · 17/02/2022 21:35

Ours en-suite - love the 1970s tiles, large bath, double sink, large illuminated mirror, loads of storage. Large window.

Don’t like having a bidet that means the toilet is too close to the door.

Family bathroom very 1970s but loads of storage large bath also has twin sinks and loads of storage.

Daughters en-suite is new but too big and wrong end of the room I’d like to make to smaller and move to the back of the room.

raspberryjamchicken · 17/02/2022 21:39

My bathroom is small but workable. Things I especially like are the recessed shelf that the plumber built into the shower and my Grohe taps. I would say spend a bit extra on decent taps. I have nice dark grey tiles, a bit textured, that don't show the dirt.

We have a nice big heated towel rail but I wish we had got underfloor heating! Also, we had our bath tiled in and I don't think I would do that again. If anything ever does go wrong with the plumbing we will have to rip the whole thing out.

WispaBurgerbites · 17/02/2022 21:41

I have a love/hate relationship with my separate bath and shower cubicle. I love that the shower is separate. But it's a PITA trying to clean my bath without a shower head. And it's a PITA trying to clean my shower cubicle without getting into it. My bath also gets dusty because it doesn't get used much now the kids prefer the shower.

I'd prefer my bathroom to be at the front of the house too. The front box room and bedroom are same size, but the box room has the box above the stairs, so less space. I think I would've preferred the bathroom with a shower and bath combined where the boxroom is TBH.

StCharlotte · 17/02/2022 21:45

@TobyMory

I hate the bath. It’s way too long for me so I am literally laid flat in it. Perfect size for my husband though. Always try before you buy but hard if different heights. I love a bath so was very disappointed after it was fitted. Looks nice though.
I feel your pain but a longer bath was the only request 6'3" DH made so I grin and bear it.
Oddbutnotodd · 17/02/2022 21:48

Love my 10mm thick shower door. You forget the cost but will always be annoyed if it’s flimsy. Chrome finish on fittings so won’t date. Stone effect large tiles so less grout to clean. Wall hung fittings with drawers under basin. Large bath with integral panel so no seams ; easy to keep clean. Can’t see it but there is a completely waterproof membrane under the floor tiles. High water pressure with large storage tank. Have had a new boiler since; not a combi one.

Flexible lighting so wall light and shower light separate to ceiling lights. Large radiator.

With the high cost of building work it’s even more important not to cut corners and buy cheap fittings. I used good fitters so the finish is great.

Holothane · 17/02/2022 21:48

The lots being changed we’ve saved all year for it a walk in bath we’re both disabled a better floor to clean I hate the one now I can’t wait a bath again to soothe muscles.

DistrustfulDinosaur · 17/02/2022 21:51

I'd go with a better company than the one we used. Our bathroom doesn't have a window that opens, so my one essential was to have a humidity controlled fan rather than one that only comes on with the light. The electrician decided (once the bathroom was fitted of course) that this wasn't possible as the fan outlet was next to the shower and it's a health and saftey no no apparently. They also failed to install the underfloor heating properly, so we ended up paying for that and not being able to use it.

Other than that, I'd go for a medium toned floor as our's is a dark grey and shows up limescale pretty badly. I'd also ask more questions about what brands of taps, heated towel rails the company provides as the towel rail rusted within a few months, despite us never using it to dry towels and the taps have never worked particularly well and need repairing every few months.

I do like the ceiling which is some type of pvc cladding with spot lights, sounds a bit naff but it makes the room look brighter and when we can wipe it down easily to stop the mold.

echt · 17/02/2022 21:53

As is common older Australian house, the family bathroom is downstairs. I like that the windows are large and ordinary glass and look down into the driveway, now a garden.

I can neither see into my neighbour's house/garden, nor can they see into my garden bathroom.

echt · 17/02/2022 21:54

Garden or bathroom. Hmm

dementedma · 17/02/2022 22:02

Nothing either way. Its a very small functional space that we use to wash and wee in. I dont really give it a thought otherwise.

Pallisers · 17/02/2022 22:06

love the underfloor heating (so does the dog)
Love the storage - big linen cupboard, 2 (beautiful) medicine cabinets and 2 big drawers under each sink (I got double sinks for resale - no idea why they are a thing)
Love my walk in shower with niches in the tile to hold soap and shampoos etc.

Love the tile and countertops and the light fittings
Wish I had put in a towel warmer.

Musmerian · 17/02/2022 22:11

I love my bathroom. We converted a bedroom so there’s lots of space. Original Victorian bath - although the enamel is getting chipped now- walk in shower, lovely sage green tiles. Huge cupboard with boiler and room to hide all bathroom stuff - lots of paintings and a chair. Lovely old reclaimed rad as well.

D0gg0R0cket · 17/02/2022 22:12

Dark brown bathroom suite & pink tiles

Musmerian · 17/02/2022 22:12

@echt - yes! I can see the trees and sky from my bath.

Madmaxxy · 17/02/2022 22:12

Love: the size. We are able to have a bath and separate shower cubicle. Also it always seems to be warm even at 6am in winter which is nice.

Hate: everything else Grin floor tiles out of the nineties. Flaky peeling panelling. Bizarrely hardly any storage for a family bathroom. Nothing a bit of DIY can't fix but I do t have the time at the moment

SocksAndTheCity · 17/02/2022 22:17

I love my underfloor heating too, but hate that it's so expensive to run I barely ever have it on. I also like the heated towel rail and that I have lots of cabinet and counter space.

I don't like that I have to stand in the bath to have a shower, and I'd rather have a cubicle or (better) a tiled out corner/wet area with a proper drain in the floor 😊

ghostyslovesheets · 17/02/2022 22:17

Love the size - moved a wall to make it usable
Colour - mustard yellow wall and the rest white tiles
Shower over the bath - so I can lounge in the bath but wash my hair

Hate
I only have one - and 3 teenage girls - nightmare
The shower has to be duct taped onto the pole to use it (one child broke the fixing - have to find time to replace it)
Bath panel needs replacing

pollyglot · 17/02/2022 22:20

Went from a small-ish bathroom where the floor had collapsed from not being properly sealed, the skirting boards had been removed so that spiders came in, the septic tank was definitely on its way out and the cupboards were 1970s utility, to a newer house. 3 years old. "My" yes! My own en-suite! is as big as our bedroom in the last house. Marble floors and tiled walls, long, high windows, loo and bidet, double sinks made from grey stone, that look like huge seashells, lots of storage. Huge tiled shower , with 2 full-length glass walls, built out into a planted courtyard. Choice of 2 showerheads. Solar hot water. It's like something out of Hollywood. I love it. Except that we had a tropical cyclone last week, very hot and humid, and the marble floor turned into a lake from condensation. Even the fan couldn't cope. Oh well, that's maybe only once every couple of years.
