to think if I buy Dr Martens boots they should come in their original box?

Bought DD some docs for her birthday from Schuh, had them delivered today in a plain brown box thats ripped.
Contacted Schuh who told me that they send them out in plain boxes if the original box gets damaged in transit to them.
AIBU to think that for the price I paid they should be supplied in their original box?

If the box isn’t important, why isn’t it just a plain cardboard box?

Dr Martens spends time and money designing their boxes so clearly they think they’re important. Why would a customer not share their view?

ImInStealthMode · 17/02/2022 20:28

Asda and Lidl spend time and money designing their carrier bags too. Would it bother you if they gave you a plain one instead? Packaging is branded as an additional form of marketing.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 17/02/2022 20:33

Are they from Schuch, or the Schuch seconds store? If they're from the the actual Schuch website or store then yes I'd expect the box, from their seconds site, not so much.

EmoIsntDead · 17/02/2022 20:34

I can't believe so many people care so much about a cardboard box.

Would you feel the same if your engagement ring didn't have a box?

My engagement ring is either on my finger or in my jewelry box. Why would I care about the box it came in?

YouMuckyDuck · 17/02/2022 20:37

I'd want the original box too, you are buying it from a reputable company not a market stall
I'd send it back and say why

PJsAndRainyDays · 17/02/2022 20:49

@Blossomtoes

It’s a bit of cardboard. I can’t believe people are so hung up on a bloody box.
It's a present for a teenager. It just one of those things - unboxing new things feels special.

Without a box they feel almost second hand.

shouldistop · 17/02/2022 20:50

I'd definitely return and order again. They're a gift so you want a nice box.

RonniePickering · 17/02/2022 20:52

I'd definitely expect the box.

BulletTrain · 17/02/2022 20:58

They did this to me but with Converse. I got a crappy bent brown box with a rubber band round it. I complained as I keep my shoes in the boxes off-season and got the same reply you did! They're a gift. They should come in the box.

Comefromaway · 17/02/2022 21:02

I’d expect the original box or a discount. I’d assume they were fake without the box.

SEcretsand · 17/02/2022 21:26

My engagement ring came in a clear plastic bag 😂

Blossomtoes · 18/02/2022 01:14

Considering it’s never been back in the box in 22 years and I haven’t a clue where the box is, yes just the same.

SpacePotato · 18/02/2022 01:32

Only ever had one pair sent in a plain white box and that was from Very. Assumed someone else had tried them on and sent them back before and damaged the box.

As a gift I completely understand need for an original box.

JimmyDurham · 18/02/2022 03:03

What's so special about a Dr Martens box?

DW's engagement ring never had a box. She put it on when we bought it at the jewellers and has never taken it off since.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/02/2022 03:30

YANBU

Certains shoes have a higher resale value (higher than the purchase value if they are limited edition) if they have the original box. I have Docs and Irregular Choice and if they arrived without their proper boxes I would send them back.

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/02/2022 03:39

That said.....I now only order from the DM website (or IC as it may be) as I have found that resellers such as Schuh dont give a toss as long as they have our money.

steff13 · 18/02/2022 03:45

@girlmom21

I'd expect them in their original box, especially as a gift. The recipient might question their authenticity otherwise; same as if you resold them.
This would be my concern as well.
waitingpatientlyforspring · 18/02/2022 05:25

I wouldn't be bothered as I throw shoeboxes away but DH loves addidas trainers and is a member of some Facebook groups. In there people buy addidas boxes if theirs come damaged! So I understand that for some people a box is important.

Spacerader · 18/02/2022 05:39

I'd return them and re buy direct from Dr martens, and if you can go to a store you even get a cool canvas dr marten tote bag. I think as a gift it is important to have a proper box. If I was gifted some in a generic box I'd assume they were either knock offs or 2nd hand.

Also dr m's bought from other retailers are not covered by the years warranty should they break due to defects.

LemonMuffins · 18/02/2022 05:42

I would expect a proper box and suspect they may have been bought and returned previously.

blackdumpling · 18/02/2022 05:53

Doc Martens should definitely come in their original box if you have purchased them new from a store.
The resale value goes down significantly if they aren't in the original box.
The original box contains the Docs branded paper too
I wouldn't be happy to purchase a lovely new pair of Docs & have them come like that
Are you sure they aren't counterfeit?
I remember Schuh when lived in the UK so hoping you haven't been rorted here

I chose my own engagement ring at the jewellers and have never taken it off since.

I don't think it ever had a box and if it did I suspect the dog chewed it when he was a puppy Grin

Ha fair enough. Mine came in a wooden box with a light. I assumed that was fairly standard as I've only ever had one Grin
IamnotSethRogan · 18/02/2022 07:50

I don't think it's right what people are saying about the resale value being affected without a box. I've been watching a few on ebay and they fetch a pretty penny without a box. I've never seen anyone mention still having the box actually when trying to sell. It's not something I'd be fussed about.
