Would you send child into school tomorrow? (Storm)

GreenTeaMom · 17/02/2022 12:56

Child is 6 and attends a school only 10-12 miles away which takes about 20 minutes and she goes on a school transport bus (rural area).

We are SW but still in amber but on the boarders of where the red warning currently is.

I’m a little bit worried about child going into school tomorrow based on the forecast of how bad this storm could potentially be;

  1. Driving any distance in high winds, and if I need to drive and collect her for any reason
  2. If we have power cuts and they have to come home and I can’t reach her because of weather
  3. If we lose all mobile service and I can’t be contacted in an emergency with child at school

What would you do?

I would send my child to school.

BatShitBitchChops · 17/02/2022 12:59

I am thinking the same thing. We are mid Devon but DS goes to a SN school about 40 minutes drive away by taxi. Waiting to see if we get an email closing at the moment.

BritInUS1 · 17/02/2022 12:59

Send her to school unless you wake up in the morning and there is too much destruction

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2022 13:01

I am not sending my child to school tomorrow. Too much risk of falling trees on the road and very high winds, in the eighties, predicted for the time of the school run.

GreenTeaMom · 17/02/2022 13:01

@SirVixofVixHall yes we also get a load of trees falling down where we are - and that’s without warnings in place so fairly ‘normal’ winds, so I’m dreading what it’s going to be like tomorrow

I don't think you are over reacting - I think generally they advise against non essential journeys in really high winds. It depends what your journey is like and whether you are likely to meet falling trees, flying debris etc.

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 17/02/2022 13:07

I wouldn’t, it’s one day and advised not to travel

ColettesEarrings · 17/02/2022 13:12

Not a chance.

GreenTeaMom · 17/02/2022 13:40

Problem solved - they have closed the school tomorrow due to us being upgraded to a red warning x

I was going to say, not if it's a red warning, but I see the decision has been taken out of your hands. Sounds sensible.

mumofone234 · 17/02/2022 13:49

We're in a red area and at the moment the school is still going to be open. I'm actually hoping they close it so that I don't have to worry about DS not being with us.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 17/02/2022 13:53

I was following this, same sort of predicament- youngest ds, SEN school, school mini bus, over an hour away and a little bit rural- not entirely- but wasn't willing to send him in vile weather. I think I'm keeping him off, all the best!

HelloFrostyMorning · 17/02/2022 13:56

The storm will be over by 7-8am. Can't believe they are closing the schools. Any excuse eh? Hmm

And then they FINE parents for having the temerity to keep their kids off in school time.

I'm glad I lied when I wanted to keep mine off, and said they had tummy bug (when I just wanted to take them to the beach.)

Why not? The schools see fit to close the school for naff-all.

The storm will only be over by 7-8am if you’re in west Wales or the far SW. We are in Gloucestershire on the border between the red and amber warning areas, and for us, the worst is forecast to start about 9am.

It all depends on where you are.

itrytomakemyway · 17/02/2022 14:06

Schools will not be shutting on a whim. It is very rare indeed for a red warning to be issued. But of course, feel free to have another chance to do some school bashing.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/02/2022 14:07

A few years back, not UK, the local Fire Brigade made the decision to close all schools at 11am. For DDs school, having to send for school buses, it meant they left school at 1pm, just as the storm hit the peak. They would have been safer in school by that point than on the roads unfortunately.

3 years. Younger DD, now 9, still terrified of wind at school.

If I had a long drive and a predicted bad storm I'd keep them home now.

Porcupineintherough · 17/02/2022 14:10

Yeah, not for everyone. Hmm Wind speeds are forecast to peak here around noon.

TattiePants · 17/02/2022 14:15

I'm in the NE so tomorrow's storm isn't predicted to be too bad here but after seeing the devastation from Storm Arwen last year, I'd have no hesitation about keeping them off. Glad the decision's been taken out of your hands.

mumofone234 · 17/02/2022 14:26

Our school has just announced it'll be closed and I'm really relieved. Saves on people having to make potentially dangerous decisions about driving etc.

GooodMythicalMorning · 17/02/2022 14:34

Both my kid's schools have just announced they'll be closed tomorrow

sasparilla1 · 17/02/2022 14:37

Ds (aged 10) is really hoping he can stay home tomorrow, but we live 3 doors away from school so there really is no excuse!!

tkwal · 17/02/2022 14:40

I would keep mine at home in these conditions but it's half term here anyway

CJay81 · 17/02/2022 14:40

Our schools have closed. We're in Wales, outside of the red zone but a very rural area. People travel long distances to school here.

gogohm · 17/02/2022 14:43

The school transport system will be monitoring the situation, they will cancel if it looks bad. I'm also in the area so brought work home to wfh in case but will make the decision in the morning, weather forecasters get it wrong so often

Pumpkinstace · 17/02/2022 14:44

Our school has shut, North Wales
