Would you send child into school tomorrow? (Storm)

GreenTeaMom · 17/02/2022 12:56

Child is 6 and attends a school only 10-12 miles away which takes about 20 minutes and she goes on a school transport bus (rural area).

We are SW but still in amber but on the boarders of where the red warning currently is.

I’m a little bit worried about child going into school tomorrow based on the forecast of how bad this storm could potentially be;

  1. Driving any distance in high winds, and if I need to drive and collect her for any reason
  2. If we have power cuts and they have to come home and I can’t reach her because of weather
  3. If we lose all mobile service and I can’t be contacted in an emergency with child at school

What would you do?

@HelloFrostyMorning winds are only forecast to increase from 8am peaking at 11am here

MillyMollyMandyMaybe · 17/02/2022 14:46

@gogohm

The school transport system will be monitoring the situation, they will cancel if it looks bad. I'm also in the area so brought work home to wfh in case but will make the decision in the morning, weather forecasters get it wrong so often
They really haven’t got this one wrong. If you know how to read a satellite picture, you’d be in no doubt about this one.
Moneymatters2022 · 17/02/2022 14:48

Our neighbouring LA have closed all schools tomorrow. It's due to be 85mph 8am.

I'm not sure I'm happy risking it

Scotmum83 · 17/02/2022 14:57

No I don't think I would. Im in Scotland and I was about 30 mins away when storm Arwen shut and had a nightmare getting back to get my daughter out of school as they were shutting early.

SirVixofVixHall · 17/02/2022 15:47

@CJay81

Our schools have closed. We're in Wales, outside of the red zone but a very rural area. People travel long distances to school here.
I am the same, I think my dds school is also closed, I am just about to check emails.
PaulGallico · 17/02/2022 15:52

School closed in Cornwall.

PeeAche · 17/02/2022 15:56

My kids school is closed. If it weren't closed, they would go to school. Tomorrow will be a WFH day where very little is achieved, I fear. But, y'know, don't want my kids blowing away so... 💁🏻‍♀️

SuitcaseOfWhine · 17/02/2022 15:59

Our school is shut, we are in Amber but on the coast, so local flooding expected. I'm relieved as there is a narrow path down a very busy road and I don't think it is safe as some mothers will be pushing buggies and trying to watch young kids in torrential rain and gale force winds. It is the right decision.

Schools are well set to provide online learning now, which belps, but there will be working parents and their workplaces who might not be happy.

BuritoCat · 17/02/2022 16:01

I send mine in and we get 60-70mph winds regularly. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Giraffesandbottoms · 17/02/2022 16:02

It’s half term here but considering cancelling all
Plans. Our area only Amber but it’s a bit scary snd not worth risk

RedToothBrush · 17/02/2022 16:05

I am guessing that if you live in an area which is red or close to red, school and public transport will be disrupted before your child leaves for school if an official closure hasn't happened.

I certainly would not want to be driving any distance in a red area unless i absolutely was compelled to.

I would only consider walking to school and for many thats not an option and they may find many staff unable to get in.

I think by 6am/7am many will largely have this decision taken out of their hands for reasons above

aldilemonade · 17/02/2022 16:16

We live in west Wales and our childrens school has been shut due to the storm tomorrow.

justasking111 · 17/02/2022 16:19

@Pumpkinstace

Our school has shut, North Wales
Ours too in Conwy we're due a pasting
justasking111 · 17/02/2022 16:21

Checking ventusky gusts over 100 miles tomorrow

Oneborneverydecade · 17/02/2022 16:32

We're in Sussex so amber I think. DD goes to nursery on a farm - they're inside to eat lunch only. I'm really not sure about sending her

Mo1911 · 17/02/2022 16:35

Duvet day!

GnomeyGnome · 17/02/2022 16:41

@BuritoCat

I send mine in and we get 60-70mph winds regularly. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Where do you live that you get 60-70mph winds regularly?! I'd have to move. Hate wind.
Chely · 17/02/2022 16:43

If the warnings are severe I would expect the school to be closed, if not closed mine would be going.

nomoneytree · 17/02/2022 16:49

We are red. Council has shut all schools.

WeirdlyKind · 17/02/2022 16:49

I had to go to work in the last red warning and I honestly wish we'd closed. It was scary as an adult with trees falling in the grounds. Glad your school has been sensible!

(I don't work in a school so no kids about but it scared me and I'm normally not bothered with bad weather!)

busyeatingbiscuits · 17/02/2022 16:54

I'm keeping mine home, why risk it?

3Daddy31982 · 17/02/2022 16:54

It's a red alert that's unusual no personally I wouldn't.

3Daddy31982 · 17/02/2022 16:55

The red warnings mean danger of threat to life and falling debris

AryaStarkWolf · 17/02/2022 16:56

If you don't feel safe, don't send them in

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 17/02/2022 17:02

@HelloFrostyMorning

The storm will be over by 7-8am. Can't believe they are closing the schools. Any excuse eh? Hmm

And then they FINE parents for having the temerity to keep their kids off in school time.

I'm glad I lied when I wanted to keep mine off, and said they had tummy bug (when I just wanted to take them to the beach.)

Why not? The schools see fit to close the school for naff-all.

It's hardly "naff all" if you've got a risk to life warning is it 🙄

Our schools are closed but doing online learning so it's not an extra day holiday for anyone here
