Would you send child into school tomorrow? (Storm)

Child is 6 and attends a school only 10-12 miles away which takes about 20 minutes and she goes on a school transport bus (rural area).

We are SW but still in amber but on the boarders of where the red warning currently is.

I’m a little bit worried about child going into school tomorrow based on the forecast of how bad this storm could potentially be;

  1. Driving any distance in high winds, and if I need to drive and collect her for any reason
  2. If we have power cuts and they have to come home and I can’t reach her because of weather
  3. If we lose all mobile service and I can’t be contacted in an emergency with child at school

What would you do?

All of our schools in my area of Wales are closed

justasking111 · 17/02/2022 17:24

Wales at lunchtime tomorrow

BoredZelda · 17/02/2022 17:41

I wouldn’t have in your position. Glad you don’t have to make the call!

cookiemon666 · 17/02/2022 18:25

We are in North Devon, our schools and colleges are closed tomorrow. Online learning already set up

Matildalamp · 17/02/2022 18:35

The weather the rest of the country is expecting tomorrow, Shetland has had pretty constantly since Christmas. The schools haven’t closed and we’re all pretty rural. Send your child to school, it’s just wind.

FangsForTheMemory · 17/02/2022 18:40

It’s not just wind if you live near a lot of trees or buildings.

Spindelina · 17/02/2022 18:43

@FangsForTheMemory

It’s not just wind if you live near a lot of trees or buildings.
In particular, if you live near a lot of trees or buildings that aren't used to / designed for this strength of wind.

Same as the south coast in 1987.

itsgettingweird · 17/02/2022 18:49

I would be wary of sending them in purely because of the risk of getting home again if the storm worsens. Particularly because you are in the edge of the red area.

Sorry - somehow missed your update that you're now in red! Problem solved!
Moneymatters2022 · 17/02/2022 18:54

@Matildalamp shetlands are better prepared for high winds. We aren't.

UppermillSarah · 17/02/2022 18:55

why would you not send them?

mamaoffourdc · 17/02/2022 19:36

Most of schools in Gloucestershire have been closed

pigsDOfly · 17/02/2022 19:48

why would you not send them?

Clearly for a good reason.

If you'd read the thread you'd see that OP's children's school is being closed.

balalake · 17/02/2022 19:49

Glad to read the school made the decision at lunchtime and not either later or tomorrow morning.

busyeatingbiscuits · 17/02/2022 20:13

@UppermillSarah

why would you not send them?
Because it’s dangerous? People die from being hit by falling trees and debris during storms. Children have died on school playgrounds from being hit by trees.
Matildalamp · 18/02/2022 15:51

We’ve had a horrendous winter this year in Shetland, I am sick of the sound of the wind. And it’s galling when storms further down the country get so much coverage.

But I’m here to say I was wrong and I’m sorry Blush

The difference is huge built up areas, trees, trains, massive trucks on motorways, and rivers. There are a whole host of potential problems down there that we simply don’t have here. And a highest gust of 122mph would make the headlines here too.

Sorry, Blush

Lesson learned, don’t be a horrible grump cos we’ve had a bad winter. How you’re all safe Flowers

Hellosunshine17 · 21/02/2022 07:35

I am keeping my children home, the school has not announced they are shut but both cycle to school and feel it's just unsafe and would not want to risk it!.
