To fucking hate Nicholas Witchell?

When is this awful man going to remove himself from backsides of people who work at Buckingham Palace? He’s so gushing and fawning and sycophantic, and even his bloody voice gets on my nerves. I dread anything happening with the royals because you just knew he’ll pop up on the news like a rancid fart. Doesn’t he realise that none of them like him?

@Temporaryrespite

desperate hangers on like Lady Colin Campbell or the gruesome Arbiter father and daughter. Or, worst of all, the dreaded Ingrid Seward.

This has really made me laugh for some reason GrinGrin
They are a pretty horrific bunch aren't they? May I add Penny Junior to the list ... ? Grin

Who is that grey-haired man (not Dickie Arbiter, this guy is younger) who has what I think of as a ‘letterbox’ mouth — unusually wide and straight? He’s spectacularly annoying and dogmatic, whoever he is? Richard Something?
VikingOnTheFridge · 16/02/2022 08:33

Wouldn't fancy the gig personally. Ewww no.

However, if it was my job, it paid the bills and it suited me well enough, I certainly wouldn't be letting something as utterly unimportant as what Charles thinks of me get in the way of that. Perhaps that's Witchell's take.

"Why does Witchell attract such venom?"

Because anyone who had any dealings with him and could give an honest opinion, used the descriptions that are on this thread, obnoxious, condescending etc. There was how he treated his children, a drink issue that was covered up, suggested drink driving, sitting on a lesbian was supported at the time, but while others in the studio ignored the protest, he chose to get physical with one of the lesbian protesters.
However the overreaction to him is strange and asking "isn't he dead?" When he's only in his 60's is unnecessary, but it does show what a long career he's had.

longwayoff · 16/02/2022 09:25

I'm getting on and have watched many royal correspondents over the years. They all - Jennie Bond being a notable exception - slowly transmute into apparently believing themselves to be part of the royals themselves grandiose self-importance, paired with slavering sycophancy, being the least of it. I can't abide any of them and their valued 'expertise'. Can you imagine the Prince Andrew interview carried out by any of them? No wonder Emily Maitlis came as a shock.

BrioNotBiro · 16/02/2022 09:41

He sits on lesbians Grin

But most of the people on this thread have not had any direct dealings with him. That’s the point.

Why is Witchell getting the opprobrium and not eg Ingrid Seward (‘editor IN CHIEF of Majesty magazine!’ as if she were not the sole member of staff on a magazine I have never seen for sale, anywhere, and which I expect has a circulation of around 700 old ladies who like reading stories about corgis) or old letterbox gob (whose name I can’t remember either but I know who the PP means)?

Neither of them have sat on a lesbian, as far as I am aware but I still prefer Witchell. I suspect that the venomous opinions have been influenced by Prince Charles, which is pretty tragic!

Iamthewombat · 16/02/2022 12:17

Jennie Bond was no stranger to slavering royal sycophancy! I read something in my mother’s ‘Platinum’ magazine, Jennie Bond’s most treasured possessions or something, most of which were linked to the royal family.

Including an (unworn) pair of dreadful shiny beige tights given to her by Saint Diana in the 1990s after Jennie Bond had obsequiously observed that Diana’s legs always looked fabulous etc etc. That’s not normal, is it?

Phos · 16/02/2022 12:18

He doesn't bother me, he's just doing his job.

ManicPixie · 16/02/2022 12:19

It's endemic in british media.

"Royal Correspondent" really means: Royal Sycophant

TheKeatingFive · 16/02/2022 12:20

It's a very strange job and I assume its turned him into an odd kind of person. Hopefully one day he'll wake up and think 'why the fuck do we need these grasping letches in our lives' and lead the revolution.

MorningStarling · 16/02/2022 12:21

He's their royal correspondent, it's his job to be close to the royal family. If he was critical of them he'd be no good as a royal correspondent because they'd have no trust in him.

He can be factual even if those facts are negative, but it's not his role to air opinions.

Personally I think he's no worse than Jennie Bond was. Also I thought Witchell was good when he was a newsreader, I well remember him on the six o'clock news. He's just doing what his current role requires.

x2boys · 16/02/2022 12:24

He is a Sycophant, but he's the BBC Royal correspondent, it's his job to fawn and gush

enjoyingscience · 16/02/2022 12:26

I’d want to see him out of a job, but only because I think the monarchy should be binned off ASAP.

He seems a bit fawning, but that’s far less of a crime than any of the entitled morons demanding our respect and service (and literal money) because of the accident of their birth. No ta.

And ‘royal commentator’ means “can’t get a salaried job fawning over the royals so I do it on a freelance basis”. That’s Lady Colin Campbell (she makes me laugh so much) and the awful Arbiter father and daughter. Imagine inheriting the family business of kissing the hem of the royal robes!

Haha, was just coming on to post Terry Devlin Grin

Jonny Dymond is another RC who always looks like he’d rather be corresponding about something else. Bin collections, dog shit…..anything. We say Jonny Diiiiiiiiiii-mond like an East End villain when he’s on. I can’t remember why.

Seriously? Grin

Do you suppose they live in a shrine when not being photographed by Platinum magazine? Grin

I'm relieved that someone else knows who I mean by Letterbox Mouth Royal Commentator -- I was worried for a while I'd invented him from a dark corner of my brain.

ginandbearit · 16/02/2022 12:29

Jeremy Clarkson always calls him 'poor Nicholas Witchell'..which I get ..he was a good news anchor and it seemed a demotion to become royal correspondent and talk about corgis, yet if something juicy came up.no one would take you seriously because ..corgis . He doesnt look well either ..perhaps that's self loathing ..

Quite. They all make my bum pucker up. Painful grovelers desperate to shuffle up the feudal system.

Iamthewombat · 16/02/2022 12:42

(That’s Diana’s hideous beige shiny tights, given to Jennie Bond, for those distracted by real life).

That really made me laugh. I can just see it now. Surrounded by lit candles with ‘candle in the wind’ playing.

Aderyn21 · 16/02/2022 12:44

I'd rather be unemployed than fawn all over the monarchy. I agree with Prince Charles tbh, although it wasn't great that that was caught on camera. Wit hell should have had more pride than to continue in that role afterwards.

SnakeLinguine · 16/02/2022 12:57

Thank you! That's Letterbox Mouth Man.

He’s always been very professional. He used to read the main 6 o’clock news. I suspect you just don’t like him because you a fan of certain ex-working royals whose followers have taken against him for some reason.
