To be so worried

I've posted about this a couple of times over the last couple of days but I don't know what to do!!

DD (4) has a viral infection since Wednesday that has affected her stomach. Went to the Gp on Friday who sent her straight to the hospital as she was very dehydrated and her blood sugar was dangerously low. They gave her some glucose gel stuff and put her on a fluid challenge and then discharged her once she had some fluid. We took her back in last night as she was still being sick and had only managed 200ml of dioralyte and hadn't peed in 24 hours. They gave her some more dioralyte and luckily she did a wee while we were there so they sent her home and told us to carry on with the fluid challenge.
Today she has managed 100ml of dioralyte, has slept for over 16 hours throughout the day and has been for a really tiny wee. She hasn't eaten anything other than half an apple since Wednesday. She hasn't got the energy to keep her eyes open let alone stand up or walk around. If we go back to the hospital I think they will just do the same as we are doing at home by giving her syringes of dioralyte but I'm starting to get really really worried. She's literally skin and bones, her lips are cracked and her skin is greyish. I don't know how much longer they can expect her to carry on like this! Has anyone had anything similar that could give some advice?

Your poor wee girl. This all sounds very wrong and worrying. I hope you got back to the hospital and she is soon better.

I would keep taking her back to hospital as long as she is being sick. Most sickness bugs are usually 24-48 hrs duration. Anything longer needs investigation. That's why GPs will refer to hospital after three consecutive days of vomiting.

My granddaughter (5yrs) had sickness and diarrhoea recently. She was referred to hospital after 3 days. She had open access to a children's ward as she was being treated for dehydration. My daughter was repeatedly taking her back to hospital because the sickness was not stopping. She didn't think that doctors were taking her seriously until her daughter had to be carried in because she was too weak to walk.

She could not keep a sip of water down.

After 8 days of vomiting, the hospital gave her a dose of ondansetron. The sickness stopped but she did not eat for a further week because she felt sick. She lost a significant amount of weight and now looks very 'frail'. It's as though her body was stuck in a cycle of sickness.

I think that something should have been done sooner to stop the sickness. I have never seen her so poorly. She was sleeping most of the day.

They said it was a virus.

It's the third vomiting bug she's had this academic year.

Really hope you get some answers and some help Flowers

urghhhhh33 · 15/02/2022 17:06

Thank you for all the kind wishes. She is now back home. She was kept in on a drip and once that had finished she managed to start eating and drinking on her own and looked instantly more like herself again x

And that shows how you were right to take her back.

That is why they give open access - because if they can get better without the drip that is preferable (being on a drip is no fun for kids) but they want you to return if it doesn't improve.

So glad she is feeling better Flowers

changenametimeagain · 15/02/2022 19:15
